One of my friends in line with me had her phone out and she told me, "Oh it just died." I had to dig through my purse to get a phone and call 911 for the woman. It makes me sick so many people don't want to get involved to prevent something or save someone! I'm glad that man did something!
As a Flight Dispatcher....... I ask the flying public to stop waiting for others to take action in situations like this. Sometimes, YOU are the help that you may be waiting to come to the rescue. I'm not familiar with the FA's contract, but I'm sure they risk falling in the dog house with the company if they confront passengers. ( lawsuits ) Especially in this situation. The best the captain can do is declare an emergency and get on the ground as soon and safely as possible. Dispatch can advise ATC,authorities, and the airport for intended diversion. I'm surprised passengers didn't act quicker. Especially considering that their life and safety is now in peril. Ok. Rant over.
@user-pd7il3xz5j I guess you missed the part where I said I'm not familiar with flight attendants contract, but I'M SURE THEY FACE SOME TYPE OF RISK WITH THE COMPANY IF CONFRONTING PASSENGERS. Having started out my career at the airport I too have been confronted by passengers and seen coworkers assaulted. Having to call the police many times. Most times, it's an uphill battle having the airline side with the employee. ESPECIALLY if caught on film. It can ve a bo-win as an airline employee these days.Given the amount of years people put in with airlines...good luck getting your job back if you lose it because you decided to 'confront' a passenger yet again having a meltdown at the airport, or on an airplane.
I’m so sick of drug abusers and then some. Been around them my whole life. Lived with them in my childhood, teens. Selfish people who don’t care about no one but themselves. Take take take is what they do.
It’s good this man was able to help in this situation. And good there were restraints. Glad he wasn’t trying to open the emergency doors. Interesting though flight attendants didn’t interact or alert the pilots?
The FAA needs to step up enforcement and create laws that enable a violator to be banned from ALL airlines and flights, not just the original airline where the offense occurred. Being banned from one airline still allows that person to repeat that behavior on another flight, endangering others in the future.
Flight attendants are trained, to handle situations like this and instead of restraining the passenger, for everyone else’s safety, they did absolutely nothing.

I worked at an acute psychiatric hospital near San Francisco International Airport, and we frequently received psychiatric patients who had decompensated during travel. Travel stress may lead to fatigue, dehydration, missing medications, jet lag, disorientation, alteration in activities of daily living, and sometimes they experience a psychotic break. If you are not healthy/mentally stable, do not travel. Learn to be happy where you are and use mass public transit on the ground.

@@lilcupc4k3s Sit down you doing know what you're talking about. They are trained! The Bystander Effect in our country is just terrible! When I was in college in the early 2010s, I was the only one, a woman, to stop two of my male friends from starting a physical fight while everyone was just laughing and egging them on. In 2012 in a McDonalds, a woman collapsed and I yelled for someone to call 911 and everyone was just staring between me and her. One of my friends in line with me had her phone out and she told me, "Oh it just died." I had to dig through my purse to get a phone and call 911 for the woman. It makes me sick so many people don't want to get involved to prevent something or save someone! I'm glad that man did something!

I ask the flying public to stop waiting for others to take action in situations like this. Sometimes, YOU are the help that you may be waiting to come to the rescue.
I'm not familiar with the FA's contract, but I'm sure they risk falling in the dog house with the company if they confront passengers. ( lawsuits )
Especially in this situation. The best the captain can do is declare an emergency and get on the ground as soon and safely as possible.
Dispatch can advise ATC,authorities, and the airport for intended diversion. I'm surprised passengers didn't act quicker. Especially considering that their life and safety is now in peril.
Ok. Rant over.
Why was this not the responsibility of the flight attendants?
Thank G-D a passenger did something to address the situation.
