For the last tutorial of 2014, we're going to be taking a look at one of Microsoft's most influential operating systems ever: Windows 95! Released in 1995, Windows 95 brought a whole new interface design to Windows, and made computers way easier to use for the average user. I should note that this installation is for the original edition of Windows 95, and not for any of the OEM service releases, although the installation for those versions should be very similar.

I did this so many times back in the day. Thank you for the nostalgia. In some ways working with 95 / 98 was funner than working with modern Windows today. My favorite of all time was XP.

I'm installing this on my Dell Inspiron 4000 on this 40gb hard drive that came with my Inspiron 8500 from the factory. The guy left a lot of programs, documents and data so i felt good formatting the hard drive.

The nostalgia watching a windows 95 installation...
works nice, and there are no missing dll and vxd file issues. Better click yes for sound during installation because later on you can't activate sound anymore. And who wants to miss this famous win95 start sound? :-)

I'm installing onto a real device and I got to the fixed disk prompt and went through it but then when rebooting (I used ctrl/alt/del) it didn't load into the A: prompt but instead is just stuck on a blinking underscore. Any suggestions on how to solve this issue? I'm using an old Fujitsu Lifebook with a pentium processor and bios from 95/96

I get invalid disk when i start it. Im trying to fix it, I think it may be your autorun or some corruption within the files. (Windows 95 (CD).)

Is vmware better than virtualbox? I have 335 GB of virtual machines on my laptop, and i want to export them. They are taking up over half the disk on my laptop

@@SeanWallaWalla You would need to export the individual folders of the VMs to wherever you wanna move it, and then modify the VB options to reflect this.

whenever I use floppy disks or a cd-rom without installing DOS first, it says "netapi.dll not found." it is in a .cab but the os cant extract it. also, I cant browse for the file. help!

dose this not work for old computers. when i try to read drive R:\> it says cdr101: Not ready reading drive R, am i using the wrong boot on the cd. am i supposed to use the floppy first and then the cd. this is really irritating me. can someone please help i just want to get this over with.

Run Fdisk and make sure you formatted as FAT16. Win95 doesn't support FAT32.

thanks for the incredible tutorial! Sadly for me, it seems that I can't first boot into MS-DOS, formats the disk, and then run setup, because every time SUWIN prompts "An error has occurred in your application" I couldn't begin the setup. I have to boot into setup directly and later.

Finally, someone that knows what they're doing. Only thing bad is the damn music. Why does every video these days have to have techno/rap/some other modern music so loud it shatters the windows in your house? Why? Just talk. That's all we need.
Um... I don't know if your ears are oversensitive or something, but during the tutorial the speech sounds louder than the music. And I am 16, just in case you have an argument that I am an old man in stock. Maybe you have your computer speakers at the max volume and that's why you are complaining so much.

I have got an IBM Netvista with 1.5GByte of RAM but get this problem after installing Windows 95 OSR 2.5. It installs fine but when restarting I get this message: Quit one or more memory-resident programs or unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and restart your computer. The thing is I keep getting this message even when renaming the extension of both autoexec.bat and config.sys files to txt rather than bat and sys. How can I make windows 95 to work and boot. I get the same problem when installing windows 98SE.

Im having one problem. its once after i complete the installation when it says to remove all disks and than restart. i do just that but when i boot up there is a message saying "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer" (i also try restarting several times) im using VirtualBox 6.1 instead of VMware if that matters

Either your ISO is corrupt or it's the boot disk. I only get a C prompt after the Format C section of your tutorial. Going to D is a no go. I never had luck with any of all bootables.

The Windows95a.img disk didnt work, so I did it on the MS DOS 6.22 boot disk you provided before and it worked perfectly, so you dont have to use the Windows95a.img file, just us a MS DOS 6.22 boot disk and go through the same process as what this is. It might read some things differently but it's the same thing...

When i try installing with the iso it dosen't wanna copy items.
When I write "copy R:\WIN95\^.^ C:\WIN95", DOS tell me there's an error. WHY? (I used ^ because the symbol in the command isn't possible to be seen)
You need to specify a couple of things.
1. What's the error that appears?
2. From which path are you typing these commands in?
3. What's your CD-ROM drive letter?

I did everything again but i installed MS-DOS 7.10 and it work. Despite that i still get: there is not enough conventional memory to check a drive.

Replace ram with under 1GB as windows 9x can't handle it, try to run setup. I doubt you will be able to find the drivers for your hardwear.
On VMware player 16 i'm having trouble starting up the system:

@trevortornadoes122 That isn't the version used on the video. The version used is the original RTM Windows 95 version.

does windows 95 have has a Built-in MsDos System? as in. you Don't need MS-DOS To install windows 95. and or you can do the "ms-dos Like commands" with out having msdos installed. by just booting in to windows 95's CD
+Shy tzedaka You just need an MS-DOS boot disk to boot up into DOS and configure the partitions. You could have DOS fully installed on the hard drive if you wanted, but it is easier to just use the boot disk.

So I guess you can't use VMWare tools in Windows 95? I'm new to using any kind of virtual machine, and I followed your video to a T and I was successful in installing Windows 95, but then VMWare prompted me to install VMWare tools and I did, and after I restarted Windows 95, it just keeps saying "While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." And I've restarted it a few times already and I keep getting this same message. It doesn't matter whether I click "normal" or safe mode, it still gives me this message. So I guess I'll have to reinstall Windows 95, then...? :(
No sound. Installing VMWARE Tools throws illegal operation so I can't drag and drop to install drivers. Useless at this point so if anyone has the answer I'd be grateful.
