    Hi Michael, another great review here well done. The Canon XF605 would work well for your wedding filming. Low light in a wedding situation would be very good. I agree with your thoughts on a 4/3 camera. Yes JVC did it so why not the other brands? Maybe go 605 with the G5 for the arty stuff. I've been using the 605 recently for corporate shoots and sport and a few interviews and it has a sweet image. Auto focus is fantastic as well.

    Thanks for that in depth report particularly on the low light end. I come from a 35 plus year background in ENG/EFP videography and I was seriously looking at this camera. I wouldn't want to use this camera for news. Commercial production with lights, fine, but the bad low light stuff turns me off.

    Great review where you explain both the positive and negative aspects of the camcorder. It helps decide whether a camcorder is appropriate or not, depending on the situation in which you use it.
    I was looking for information like what you offer, because I am undecided between several camcorder options: Panasonic X1500, Canon G70 and Sony AX700 to continue creating content for my modest RUclips channel. Thank you!

    Every thing that you said is correct about the camera, it is like you read my mind before shooting this video. Fuzzy images in lower light is a real problem for me especially when I compare it to a ptz that was a 1/4 of the price. I unowned that I have to spend money on lighting but I don’t want to make the same mistakes.

    Hi Michael. With the hc x1500/2000 the small sensor is not good at all. We also found to delete a "Clip" they make it hard to delete. The older models are better as far as deleting a clip. The diopter is too small. No place for a shoulder strap. Stills! now that's a challenge. No remote, hdmi cable. We found the cam works well out doors. In door as U stated it falls a part. For a run and gun, it passes. Thank U for the information. Josephobe

    Spoke to Panasonic Rep (Brice Livengood) earlier today and he told me Panny is dumping their camcorder division sooner than later and that the AG-CX350 4K Handheld Camcorder will be the last model that make before discontinuing the line. I'm a news shooter by trade and I freelance on the side. For me the Vlog is not a big deal to be honest. I just set lights white balance and keep it moving. This entire color grading epidemic that has entered into the business (IMO) is just another way for these companies to make money. I don't know one broadcast journalist shooter or editor that has time to take a news story and color grade it before it hits the 5 & 6p.m. news. (IJS) As for the HCX 1500 like you I want a decent camcorder that has SDI and a better sensor but at the price point a lager 2/3 sensor would make these types of cameras very expensive not to mention the current chip shortage. I want a smaller camera like the HX 1500 that I can hook up to a switcher and switching live events and not have to worry about a DSLR over heating or changing a lens every 15 minutes to get a certain look. Thanks for the review. It was very helpful

      Thanks for the info. I guess I'm not surprised that they would drop the whole division. Camera sells on a whole keep going down, but I imagine camcorder sells more than anything else only account for a small amount of the sales .

      That's interesting about Panny pulling the plug on their camcorder division but I can't say that I'm surprised. I think that with Covid, the worldwide economic downturn and chip shortages, this is only going to speed up the inevitable death knell of consumer camcorders. This I have been sensing for a while by the fact that Canon and, in particular, Sony, haven't updated anything in their range for a (very) long time.
      I'll expect pro-cams costing serious wodge will probably be still around for a lot longer yet.

      Regarding color correction, this is not related to the market you are in. Not every videographer is doing news gathering. Camcorders are not targeting the creative filmmaker. Creative filmmakers uses mirrorless as what they can control all parameters of the environment which they shoot.

    I've had my x1500 for nearly 7 months and use it almost daily exclusively for outdoor soccer. Sunny days and full auto were working fine for me until I watched a couple of your videos and see that I may need to invest more in learning about the manual options. Full auto has burned me on a couple of cloudy days with lots of cloud variations, shooting into a setting sun, and on some late-night games with stadium lights. I'm a little paranoid about guessing wrong with manual settings and messing up a large portion of the game. Any recommendations on where to look for learning more about some of the manual capabilities of the camera? The textbooks didn't teach me calculus. Nothing different there.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  2 года назад +1

      I relied heavily on the instruction manual with this camera. Not a lot of thorough instructional vids for the x1500 that I found. Not sure if you use AF tracking when shooting soccer, but if you do, then you are stuck in full auto if I remember correctly.

    Really appreciate this information Michael. It has so helped me. I am after an upgrade for the one for my kids field hockey games at night. I have several consumer Panasonics and my HC-VX1 has the same f 1.18 to 4.12 as X1500 including same sensor size so I know the night performance is fine for what I am using it for. I've got 4K at 25fps and 1080 at 50 fps so keen for 4K at 60 fps as well as 1080 at 120fps that you can use the 2nd slot for. Do you know or can I find out how out how fast it zooms in? It seems my Panasonics zoom in very fast which makes up for my lack of skill so wanting to know. I also want to use the LANC for a remote so I only have to use one hand to control the tripod and camera zoom. Do you know if this will slow the zoom down. I've seen other camcorders have slow zoom as a result and want to keep one of the things that make me look good. Thanks in advance for your time.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  2 года назад +1

      The zoom was pressure sensitive via the rocker, so it could be slow or fast. The handle could be set to be slow or fast in the menu. If I remember correctly, I felt that the slowest setting through the handle was not slow enough for me. I don't know about the LANC controller and how it worked for this camera because I never tried it

      @MichaelWTurner  2 года назад +1

      This one was a issue for me because I am trying to match it with cameras that have much bigger image sensors. That might not matter for you. Not sure if you are selling these soccer games or keeping them for family use.. But for family use, I wouldn't matter to me much if it wasn't perfect in lowlight. However I still feel the AF on the Sony NX80 or something like the canon xa50 outperforms this camera. THe image quality on both of those is also better in low light conditions

    You can not expect too much from a camcorder. This is definitely a daylight camcorder, and you won't get any good "bokeh" out of it. This is more an "interview" and documentary type of camera and would need additional lights in darker environment. If you want a camcorder with a full-frame sensor, you would have to move to a "cinema camera", like the Sony FX3, that costs more than double, not to mention that you would also have to buy the lenses separately. Considering its large zoom range, high quality lens, 3-step built-in ND filters and acceptable color for broadcasting (10-bit 4:2:2), this is a great camera for its price.

    To be fair, a point-and-shoot with a M43 sensor doesn't have the same features as the x1500. The Lumix guys have explained multiple times that you can't get an internal ND into even the GH5/GH6, which have interchangeable lenses. And a camcorder also has to have space for the fixed Lens and the stabilizer. That's why the dvx200 was so big.
    I myself would have also liked it if they put in a 1" sensor instead. But then we probably would have lost some of the features. Other camcorders for that price only go up to 4k 25p in 8 bit and have that bigger sensor. The problem is: a bigger sensor and more bitrate needs more processing and more heat. The Sony Z90 one the other hand HAS a 1" Sensor AND 10 Bit, but only in HD, 4K is still has 8 bit. And that camcorder is 1,000 bucks more expensive. ...and is still struggling in low light.
    I think the x1500 and its brothers certainly have a place, especially as a B- or C-Cam for a Lumix (Which I'm considering it for)
    Sorry but this feels like the Full Frame hype from a different corner. "Why would they only put a M43 sensor into the GH6? You just have to go Full Frame nowadays, everything under that doesn't look as good. M43 is terrible for Low Light etc." You trade some of the image Quality for a smaller sensor and in return get a more affordable price and more features for that price and size.
    I hope you get what I mean, since you're using a a6400 instead of a Full Frame Sony you've probably made that distinction yourself :)

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  2 года назад +1

      I actually think the image quality and low light performance out of newer m43 cameras is quite good. Honestly the image quality has been exceptional for quite some time now. I prefer not use full frame because the lenses are bigger and typically more expensive. When it comes to best value lenses, I feel the Sony aps-c has some of the best out there. I agree the camcorders can make nice b-cams depending on the situation. Still think panasonic could've done a little better with x1500

  • @procamara359

    It's a shame that Sony doest make a camera like the Sony NG30 which is an apcs removal lens. Or to make a camcoder with the characteitcs of the A6400. With a handle for 2000$ . I think that everybody would get it.

    • @MichaelWTurner

      Exactly! I forgot all about the NG30. I think that was aps-c. They need to revise it, add nd filters, xlr...I don't think it sold well though. Probably why they aren't moving in that direction. They figure only a few of us want it I guess. Now I'm depressed 😔

    So... 1/2.5-inch sensor. But 4K. But the XLR handle is $300 extra. The body with the XLR handle together are about $1.9K. What is comparable? The NX100 cannot do 4K and they say its viewfinder is subpar, but it has larger 1" sensor and costs $1.5K with an integrated handle and XLR. In 50Hz regions Sony offers the NX200, which is the NX100 body with 4K capability. The NX80 is smaller and sort of consumer/prosumer format, but can do 4K, and can do both 50Hz and 60Hz rates, and it is significantly more expensive at $2.3K. The PXW-Z150 is larger, can do 4K and costs $3K. They say that the NX100 is great in low light, I suppose the Z150 as well, but the NX80 is not good in low light. Ugh. It seems to me that if 4K and "world cam" capability are not a requirement, then the NX100 is a very well balanced option. What do you think?

      There is no more innovation with these cameras. Thetr is very little difference between this camera and camcorders from 10 years ago. They made it a little smaller and added 4k. It's disappointing. Also the mirrorless cameras that are made by the same company totally blow these cameras away.
