I read a lot of comments about my mod. Some people call this mod a crap after watching official Black Mesa Xen trailer. It is sad to see this kind of comments after spending a lot of free time to develop it. However, I forecast it a long time ago and I wasn't wondered to hear it. Somebody can't understand, that these two projects (Improved Xen and Official Black Mesa Xen) are very different and they don't need to be compared. Offical Xen has developed since 2004 by the group of people. Just imagine what expirience do they have now and how much time did they spend to develop Official Xen.
I develop Improved Xen alone. There is no team of modders helping me, as some people think. I spent nearly two years to develop my mod and to do some updates for this mod. I believe some people will agree with me if I say that only one man without financial support can't archive BM DEV level of quality, especially if we take into account that they have been doing it for many years.
Moreover, I just work for pleasure, and I don't have any benefit from developing Improved Xen, besides the fact that I can add this kind of work into my portfolio. Also, I don't try to compete with official BM devs at all.
When I first played Half-Life 1, I liked Xen very much, and all my childhood I was dreaming to create something like that. When I realized that I have the opportunity to work with Xen maps, I aimed to return HL1 locations into Black Mesa, regardless what Crowbar Collective will do. Rate my mod just as an unofficial free addition, or just like Improved Xen maps from HL1, as the name of the mod shows.
BM devs have done such a great job, and thanks to them, we can see this kind of high-quality work in Half-Life universe.
So I repeat, that comparing Improved Xen and official Black Mesa Xen in a negative way is a little bit strange, because these two projects are too different. It is like comparing AAA game and indie game. I hope you understood my thoughts, because I am not a native English speaker.

This is actually pretty good
After seeing the official Xen trailer, this looks so much more accurate to the original game in comparison.
It's supposed to. This is pretty much an exact remake. The official Xen is going to be re-imagined, because the original was widely regarded - even by Valve itself - to be the weakest part of the game. It feels empty and rushed with relatively bad level design when compared to the rest of the game. (perhaps because of time restrictions?). Black Mesa is using concepts that never made it into HL1 and re-imagines them while adding new, but fitting content to these chapters. Instead of 30 minutes, you'll be getting 6 hours of gameplay.
But I do have a nostalgic feeling for a more exact remake like this one.
It's being entirely remade because everyone hated the original Xen, even VALVe.

The Cat Wizard crowbar collective is nowhere near the scale of even valve, and they're remaking xen, not just porting it over like this here mod does

Their version of xen is looking amazing.
For a mod version of Xen, this is actually a pretty nice effort. As people have pointed out, this is not the official Black Mesa version of Xen, which is coming to the retail game in Q2/Q3 2017.
The people who made this particular mod definitely went above and beyond previous efforts from other mod teams to do a HL1 Xen - the displacement work is nice enough, but everything else is mostly just HL1 ports and adaptations. It's pretty good for what it is, though. I was impressed.
This video and mod reminds me (I'm a Black Mesa Dev) why we decided to not take the route of just straight up remaking the HL1 version, and instead going for our own thing. What we're cooking up is going to be vastly different - and I can promise you that our level of graphical fidelity and artstyle is far, far beyond what you see here!

You are corrent Chon Kemp people put effort in this mod i think this wasn't soo easy to make like for half life 1 or half life blue shift ect. the mods are made in 1-3 days the zombie mod for half life 1 is great,it took like 1-3 weeks to make!!! If you want i will put a download link in this comment so you can play it asswell i recommend that you try the mod.And register to the site and like the modders mod. Like if you agree that Chon Kemp is right and that you want the download link for the mod =)
Even though we have Black mesa Xen, I still think this map pack is pretty cool. It's a more faithful recreation of the old Xen levels and is a good alternative for those who didn't enjoy default xen.
I love how good Black Mesa looks. And it seems, I've not played it so I can't say for sure, but it seems to keep the core traits that made Half Life so enjoyable intact.
We may never get Half Life 3 but so long as the fans keep it alive with projects like this Half Life will never die.

I still dont like the art direction. They changed some details that also made half life what it was. The hands, some weapons, the grunts, some aliens.

You should have played the free Black Mesa mod. It appears to still be available for download on ModDB. It's all of HL1 up to the point you enter the transporter to go to Xen for the final showdown. It's very good and looks very good. I have both the original mod the developers released that I backed up and the Steam paid version so that if pigs fly and in 20 years Zen is released I don't have to pay for Xen. LOL. They did a great job of updating the original HL . They also added more details to areas but you "know" where you are at when you play the mod. IMO I feel they lived up to what they promised the fans. They did leave a few things out but the mod community added them in .
I love Half-life, but Black Mesa doesn't at all feel like Half-life to me. The gameplay is very different. It will always just be an interpretation of Half life

Nihilanth is the one to blame there, The Vortigons are such nice allies and when they were not anymore under control, they sticked to humans like true allies.
Gman is another story.
Yea it was such a good idea to ally them. They are so useful and powerful. I am pretty sure freeman wouldn't want to kill them if he knew they were being enslaved. But they are attacking him so can you blame him?
The whole half life universe is gman's playground
I'm pretty sure the story is that the combine take over the nihilanth's home world, so the survivors take residence of xen. But once the resonance cascade happens, nihilant sees an opportunity to conquer a more hospitable world for him and his species

Only "special" kind of players hated Xen. The type of special that can't hit duck->jump. I never knew Xen was such an issue until a year or two ago, and all of my friends played HL when it came out or shortly after. Nobody said a single bad word about Xen back then.

It's been since I followed the development of Black Mesa Source I discovered the general opinion disliked it, but I agree with you too. On the contrary, the first time I finished the game back when I was a kid I was mesmerized by the sudden change of tone of the game!

This the NOT the black mesa XEN remake, since its remake is being released in December this year(2017), he just used some graphics and sound mods to make it look and sound slightly better. Either that or its an early version, BUT i highly doubt it, since they are rebuilding the XEN from scratch.

this is an improved version for the steam version of the game. It's much more polished trust me. But it's still not the official xen though.
The Xen in black Mesa was brilliant but did drag on for ages. If I replay black Mesa I'll probably just play this after Lambda core.

That's why its taken so long, they are not just looking to make the Xen maps straight out copies from the original, but re-do them entirely and also add much more length to the end of the game.

This is not a "Black Mesa Xen". This is "Black Mesa: Improved Xen" which is actully a mod for Black Mesa that contants the original Xen levels made by Valve in 1998 but with some minor changes and new textures. That's why it looks outdated compared to Black Mesa. The completely remastered (or better to say re-imagined) Xen is still in development.
