If I had to give it my best guess this would be like an electric plasma fuel cell similar to what you see the covenant in halo series or a nuclear fusion reactor used by the humans or a combination of both technologies would make the most sense to me -due to the size of the engines on the trains and the train power up and takeoff scenes -when the main battery fires the blue blasts it seems to have a liquid plasma type of look to it -the powertrain on the wheels of the trains when engaged for takeoff or landing look to have an electro-magnetic power to it similar to the Japanese Bullet train , In a very quick glance but i could keep going TBH.
First off none of the trains have tenders in the context of our world. Here’s how big one’s arranged: (locomotive)-(control car)-(some carriages)-(main battery unit)-(some more carriages). The SDF trains need a dedicated control car so they can coordinate their guns in an effective manner. The GRS trains don’t need a dedicated control carriage. In fact there are more GRS trains that don’t have control coaches than trains that do. The GRS trains have a lot of automation and when it comes to a civilian train you only need one person. @@parkertitle1923 some of the trains have functioning tenders. 999 for example keeps its fuel stored in the tender and the atomic boiler is fed via a conveyor system underneath the floor (explained by the conductor). however i personally believe that this method is deemed "outdated" for maintenance reasons and thus such trains are effectively phased out for better cost effective fuel storage systems that doesnt require them. it could explain why 720 doesnt have a tender but 721 does (because you always start with the oldest units first and work your way up when doing fleet overhauls). because trains like the 444, 860, and 888 also have tenders which you could probably assume are used for the same purpose.
