It features Melanie’s character, Cry Baby, in her room smoking when she notices a bottle with a label that says “Drink Me”, a parallel with the trope from Alice in Wonderland. Cry Baby drinks the liquid and passes out, fading into a pastel, nightmarish Wonderland. Via Instagram, Melanie explained that the stuffed animals are supposed to represent her closest friends and how they’ve helped her out of situations where she was forced into being something she isn’t. In the music video, Cry Baby is shown in various terrifying situations, from which her stuffed animal friends save her.

In an interview with ARTISTDirect, Melanie said that "Mad Hatter" is about being okay with who you are. In this song, Cry Baby is fully accepting herself and doesn't care what other people think of her. The song includes many references to and takes a lot of inspiration from the 1865 fantasy novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The song is the closing chapter of the story because Cry Baby embraces the chaos inside of her, refusing to hide it regardless of what the world thinks, representing her character development throughout the album.

I highly recommend watching these in order of the albums because it does have a story in it and the second album has a movie to continue it (in her first album the vinyl record comes with a story book) :)
