  • On 26 June 2024, I joined Air Greenland onboard a DHC-8-200 for their first flight from Iqaluit (YFB), the capital of the Nunavut Territory in North-eastern Canada, to Nuuk (GOH), the capital of Greenland, following a decade-long hiatus on that route. The revival of this route is done in cooperation with Canadian North, so passengers can book connections all the way to e.g. Montreal and Ottawa. Needless to say, there was quite some celebration and media coverage at Iqaluit Airport!
The flight was delayed by 1.5 hours but otherwise went by smoothly. The onboard service was great and friendly, with two drink rounds, a rich sandwich, and a muffin. The legroom was also really good and I thoroughly enjoyed this flight.
When we arrived in Nuuk, which experienced a lot of rain that evening, I was surprised to see a bus bringing us to the new terminal. I thought it was still closed but it had actually opened just two days prior. The new terminal definitely brings Nuuk Airport to a whole new level.
This flight was part of my challenge to fly from North America to Continental Europe using only Dash 8 aircraft types. Therefore, I transferred to an Icelandair DHC-8-200 from Nuuk to Keflavík (KEF). The remaining flights of that challenge will be covered in an upcoming video.

Finally someone doing the Dash 8 Atlantic challenge again! I was just talking about this to some others on RUclips last week about the resumption of service and someone should do it! Kudos! I just hope the Russia situation simmers down and that a similar feat can be done over the Northern Pacific again soon!

It’s too bad you skipped the celebrations at the Iqaluit airport, it was a lot of fun, kinda strange and awkward and also unfortunate. People are very welcoming and friendly and I think it would have been great to show that in your video.
We are happy we are connected again through this route with Nunavut and Greenland, we can visit family and friends once again. Nice to see this trip on a Dash 8 and seeing the different northern places.

Very well done. I like the route you took. Wonder how how you get to YFB in the first place.

Thanks, there'll be a video coming up about that at some point in August ;). Haven't started editing it yet, though.

Yes, Air Greenland cancelled the route claiming low demand. They had more or less been pushed by the Greenland government to reopen the route which had been serviced by First Air in the 1980s and 1990s.
However, Air Greenland had no interest in 2014 in maintaining the route to Iqaluit from Nuuk and effectively sabotaged it by charging an exorbitant price for a return ticket of DKK 12,000.
No one is going to pay that amount for a flight that lasts less than two hours in a prop engine air plane. Subsequently it failed and Air Greenland could claim that the route was not viable due to low demand.
At the same time they were operating a route to Island from Nuuk on the very same type of aircraft. The flight to Iceland is three hours, but they only charged DKK 6,000 for a return trip.
Now all of a sudden they are reopening the flight to Iqaluit. And lo and behold they have “ discovered” that apparently they can run this flight with prices around DKK 6,000.
The only reason they are doing this is because of our new runway opening in November, and they are thus facing increased competition from other airlines. I’m not holding my breath to see if they truly promote this route and maintain it at a reasonable cost to passengers.

Now you can even find return prices for as "low" as DKK 3,600. Do you happen to know if there are any government subsidies involved?
The extended runway at Nuuk might surely shake things up a bit in terms of competition.

With the extended runway at Nuuk will there be direct flights to Europe? That would make the flight attractive and a faster connection than through Ottawa or Montreal.

Yes, Air Greenland plans to start direct flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen at the end of November.

So you will enter the Danish Realm twice on this flight without entering Denmark. And thank you for not referring to the new terminal and extended runway at GOH as a “New Airport”.

At least for the Faroe islands, I briefly touched that topic when I stayed there, will be in part 2 ;).
