I think the fact that the 3 Monsters were just about the BIGGEST Toys on the Shelves at the time ( and thus very expensive) played a bigger factor in them not becoming a successful franchise. But yes, the old "Satanic Panic" at the time played its part too.
About the last part, you come to realize how foolish people are. Toys that are just fictional monsters are demonized but Ouija boards which look "normal" but MIGHT be dangerous spiritually are okay.
The less than thrilling design of thr heroes didn't help, they probably should have gone 3 3/4 with them that would have made the monsters look even bigger
