The best part about this is that, this show (or the novel) is just a toned-down, less complex version of what actually happened in history. The real events are more insane. The life of Tokugawa Ieyasu (the figure that Toranaga based on) deserves a show with multiple seasons. And I didn’t even include the prequel that focused on the life of the Taiko and the leader who mentored the Taiko and Toranaga.
makes me hopeful there could be multiple seasons but I'm torn, don't want it to be dragged out after it's good
@@aylburit’s a limited series though so i think this show only has one season
Not just this part of edo period but even before that, Japan's history is a mind fkery. Sengoku Jidai alone can outnumber MCU if each notable people gets a series.
Yes this makes me want Hiroyuki Sanada to produce a series covering Oda Nobunaga life, I think he could make it come to life.
Suzy needs to accept Japan in the year 1600. It's what it is.
“It is what it is”; 200 years ago, slavery was legal. That didn’t mean it was right.
@@shawnellesmith Grow the fuck up.
@@shawnellesmithbut you can’t change the past. So all you can do is accept it as it is.
@@callmeleo That doesn’t mean you can’t feel a certain way about it.
There is one paragraph in Clavell's book when he summarises what was the core difference between Europeans and Japanese: For Europeans, life is the highest value (especially your own life) but for the Japanese, there were values higher than life (even their own).
Well, it was writed in 1975. If we read something from 19 century, for example Alexandre Dumas, who wrote The Count of Monte Cristo. If we read this book, we see the scene where trader Morrel, being on edge of bankruptcy, decide to commite suicide in order to restore his family honour.
@@lolnoobus Yes, but wasn't the usual path. Ppl in Christian communities do not choose suicide as a way to solve things because it was viewed as one of the greatest sins. Your life came from God and you can't end it at your will.
There is plenty expl of honor suicide (japaneese kamikaze ) , honor and bravery in battle ( like the british officer that couldnt take cover during bombardement to not scared the men under ther comands ) and plenty people offering their like for their king and queens .
In fact the more you sacrifice the more you bring honor on what you do ! so yes he could have say sorry ... and his daimyo wouldhad been embarassed looked weak and killed earlier that a week , or provoke a war if you feel there is weakness .
But what do you think of a leader of a huge region ( 6 wedding ) with men willing to die even kill theyr lineage for him ?
do you want to attak that leader ?
its not a pointless death its a power move that protect their country
hopefully the world is not individualistic A-h with no honnor , people even nowdays , you imagine puting your life above everyone let 1000 die for you to live !
@@lolnoobus Ego and honour are too very difference things. Using death to escape the consequences of your choices isn't honorable
It should be said that the Japanese at this point had firearms, in Japanese called Tanegashima Teppó. Tanegashima is the island that the Portuguese arrived on and where the Japanese first got the weapon, Teppó means Iron Cannon. After the Portuguese arrived in Japan in 1543, the weapon became popular fast. In the battle of Nagashino (1575) the warlord Oda Nobunaga used Matchlock Firearms to decimate the famous Takeda Cavalry, who were considered one of the strongest armies in all of Japan, and in a pitched battle would have destroyed the armies of the Oda Clan. In fact, it is said that at some point the Japanese were manufacturing more firearms than any country in Europe.
My parents are from Tanegashima and I lived there for a few months when I was a kid. Tanegashima is a nice and serene island and the Teppo Festival is held every year. Also, my grandparents had a cauldron bathtub called "Goemon Buro". The name came from a myth that Hideyoshi Toyotomi punished Goemon Ishikawa by boiling in a cauldron. As a kid, I was so scared to soak in the cauldron tub with woodfire underneath.
@@shink287 Sounds cool!
Takeda Cavalry is a myth influenced by novel and movie.
@@qq6531 Well of course games, novels and films tend to exaggerate the Takeda’s use and strength of cavalry, they were still famed for their fierce cavalry charges among other things. But the reason that this specific trait is mentioned when referring to the battle of Nagashino is that cavalry was used to devastating effect at the famous Battle of Mikatagahara in 1572. Since Ieyasu was the one who fought that battle, he would have been voicing his concern to Nobunaga. For this reason Nobunaga placed the palisades to absorb the shock of the cavalry charges and then funnel them in to the “death zones” where they would be faced with a wall of pikes, whilst being blown to bits by the gunners.
@@TheGhost-7002 I doubt it. Is there any reference that cavalry played an important role in the battle of Mikatagahara? It is not possible that Daimyo in Sengoku period could gather a cavalry crops. When the lords of the Sengoku period are going to have war, they will ask their vassals to mobilize their armies. The 'order of mobilization' of Kawakubo Nobuzane recorded that he was asked to recruit 3 cavalry out of 28 soldiers in total. The number is limited. Most importantly, it was impossible for Daimyo that time to pull out all the cavalry out of the armies of vassals to form a cavalry corps, politically speaking. They do not have that authority. It is possible for each Daimyo, including Takeda, to form a small group of cavalry from the 馬迥眾 that was directly led by the Daimyo. But that would not be enough to form a cavalry corps to have a devastating shock attack
Since there seems to be confusion about the language, just know they're always speaking Portuguese (the lingua franca of this period) whenever they speak English. This show uses English in place of Portuguese so the audience can hear English and not just Japanese and Portuguese all the time. Just remember every time characters speak English, it's meant to be Portuguese.
Wrong, not always. Anjin only speaks Portuguese to the Portuguese and Mariko. He was speaking Dutch to Erasmus crew.
@@enoshima6699 True, but that's the only exception.
That kind of sucks and is confusing. But I understand that they have to make it appealing for english speaking masses that are most watchers
In 1600 Queen Elizabeth, the first protestant ruler in England, still alive in the time of Shogun. Even Shakespeare still there.
but died just few years later.
@@caiodias503 I know, she was done in 1603. She was very old.
@@wichard1994 No, she died in 2022.
Actually her dad, Henry VIII, was the first protestant ruler of England.
@@eddhardy1054 thanks for the info
Also, there was nothing "mystical" about the Pirate prisoner's demise. He smacked his head repeatedly off the edge of the cauldron to end his suffering quickly.
17:10 "Fief" - A piece of land given by a feudal overlord in exchange for devotion and allegiance.
this show is captivating, feels authentic. all the rest of the series needs to be is a fraction of the first two eps. 10/10 to me
It's thought that Englishmen in 1600 would have had a pirate-like accent. Nothing like RP existed.
Yep "The Great Vowel Shift" in spoken English. Really fascinating that everyone before 1700 sounded like they were from Bristol/a pirate.
25:59 Catholicism has nothing to do with the dude and his son's death. He raised his weapon and threatened another lord which shamed the lord he served, not to mention almost causing open war. There are rules on how you compose yourself in Japanese court more so during that time and I don't think that would even pass at any royal court in any parts of the world. His and his son's death assures no retaliation from any descendants as he effectively cut his line. I'm not saying it's right just explaining the scene.
We didn't say it had anything to do with Catholocism and I'm also not sure why you thought we didn't understand the scene? - Steejo
@@SuzySteejo"There is no God. Sorry. Not If that's the way things are to go" - That's what Suzy said as I have time stamped hence my reply. I also never said you did not understand the scene, I'm just giving further context.
New viewers here for Shogun. Don't be a filthy skipper.
Yoshi Toranaga's character was based off Ieyasu Tokugawa who eventually united japan and his shogunate ruled all the way till the mid 1800s meji restoration.. i cant wait for episode 3
You need to mention that he was the founder of the city of Tokyo too. Without him, the capital of Japan today would have been Osaka instead.
Also the most based Shogun for exterminating christians.
It's incredible the innovation the Japanese have. Even centuries before this takes place. Mostly isolated from the rest of the world. It's one of the most unique cultures throughout history. Faults and all.
I've seen the original at least 40 times since 1980.
I bet people don't even know there's a big ass book and an old movie. This is not just a trendy thing. It's based on an already masterpiece of a movie and book.
Did you read the books? They’re amazing.
@JNKArts88 not originally, but a few years ago, I found an audio version on youtube.
This story takes place in 1600. Osaka Castle was under siege in 1614-15, so you are correct that there needed to be repairs to it.
It also burnt down a couple times. The way it was rebuilt now is not how it would have looked back then. For example, the castle now is white, back then castles were mostly black, like it is in the show.
Osaka Castle, built by Taikō, was destroyed by fire in 1615. At the time, it was four times the size of today's Osaka Castle.
@@ジェラシー侍-m2c It also burnt again in the 1860s I believe.

I watched the original TV mini-series back in the early 80's (of course, based on the book) when I was a young teenager and remember liking it, so I was interested in watching this new version. I have to say, I did not remember all of the intricate and complicated politics in the older version...but it's entirely possible it was there but mostly went over my head at the time. LOL.
...and I became a huge fan of many of the classic Toshiro Mifune films directed by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo, The Hidden Fortress...) but my viewing of Shogun must have predated my viewing of any of those movies because I didn't realize at the time that Mifune was playing Toranaga.
39:17 that’s me Suzy lol 😂🤣😈
stop compere to got yooo
Haha, "Game of Thrones in Japan"...that's exactly what I was thinking, especially when I watched the "History and Backstory" feature that described the political and historical setting of Japan in the early 1600's.
You would think that no one had ever written a story about politics before George R.R. Martin. 🙂
It's a joke @@daryllyew62
This show is good but it's no game of thrones especially after one season only
Many people seem to be angry that the baby is also killed when the father commits seppuku. I'm not a historian, so I don't know much about it, but I think it's probably a custom among samurai families. Because such scenes can be seen in many historical dramas.
In the 12th century, two powerful samurai families fought, and the winner (the Heike) became the first samurai to take control of Japan. At that time, the winner tried to kill the loser (Genji) and his boys, but contrary to tradition, only kills the father. Those children led the Genji clan and destroyed the Heike clan 30 years later.
If the baby is a girl, I don't think she would be killed.
I'm so happy that many people get interested in Japanese culture and history through this series. And I also enjoyed this reaction. Thank you.😊
well technically a song of ice and fire would be shogun in westeros. james clavell came along well before george rr martin and the original shogun miniseries predated game of thrones. but i get the comparison.
Shogun Total War and Shogun Total War 2 (#2 is maybe the best made TW game...). I might know a few things 😅
No way you are watching Shogun as well good its awesome so far
Cosmo Jarvis is doing his best Tom Hardy here
400年前の異文化交流は大変だ。まあ、この作品はあくまでフィクションだからね。原作とも史実とも違う点がある。
I believe the man in the pot was slamming his head against it to try and shorten bath time 😅
The whole thing with the guy and his kid being punished for speaking up to defend his lord is indeed messed up, but it also shows just how serious things had gotten. The whole political situation is a tinderbox ready to explode into full war, and one brash mistep could mess it all up. Rational, diplomatic discourse was getting lost. Toranaga was stuck between that dude's death or handing Ishido a perfect excuse to go ham.
So happy to see you guys reacting to the show it is phenomenal
♥ this show so far!
6:40 FILTHY SKIPPERS!
"thats just ritual" LMFAOOOOO
I started watching this automatically thinking that’s another Breaking Bad episode and I was so confused when there was a Japan reference 😂
We got so much shit for comparing Shogun to Game of Thrones.... but I hope you're enjoying it. We're loving this show so far!
I guarantee, if you choose to, you will love Outlander. I love it for the acting, of course, and fantastic historical component
Ppl act lile there weren't stories or rather real life events that involved politics before Game of Thrones
We literally just finished Game of Thrones. - Steejo
Nobody acts like that
15:57 I enjoyed watching your reactions. In fact, the current Osaka Castle is the third generation. It was rebuilt in 1620 and 1930 too . I heard first and second generation buildings were quite different. When you visited a castle, did you notice that there was an elevator inside? This is a funny story from Osaka. The current Osaka Castle is a more like museum, so it was installed when it was rebuilt.
Hello from people who born and raised in Osaka❤
Loved Osaka! Yeah I remember the elevator lol. You can actually watch our Vlog from Osaka on Suzy's main channel (I think its on mine too but I can't remember). - Steejo

Well, sometimes playing Sudoku feels a lot like Seppuku (ref 53:53)
I barely understand what's going on this show but i'm excited to watch it.
My stepdad had the book and we watched the OG miniseries when I was 8 or something but I don't recall anything that happened.
24:00 yes he's about to commit sudoku.. they have an absolute repugnance against number puzzles
Feels nice to check with you on another show. Too bad I'm not really into Breaking Bad anymore (overdosed with it as awesome as it is). But there'll be others at some point. ^^
29:38 The previous film in 1980 also had this scene. Is it an epoch-making scene that must be inserted? It is an unpleasant scene.
Awesome reaction of my favorite episode of Shogun!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Game of thrones is fantasy, this is not... Such a dumb comparison. And Lord of the Rings is just like real life!
They're both political dramas with medieval settings...seems like an apt comparison to me. - Steejo
Maybe try Blacksails if your looking for a good pirate show.
Shogun total war is a core memory from my childhood as well Steejo. 😂
In fact the release of the sequel Shogun 2 total war was the reason I started watching RUclips videos in the first place as my PC couldn’t run the game back then.
Give it a lick! Mm, it tastes just like raisins!
I watched a couple frames last night. Did you two see season 5 of Fargo also in FX. Some day we will nukem
More bobs and/or vagana sprinkled in would curb skipping, imho.
All my best.
I haven’t watched this show yet so I’m here to leave a like and comment to support and will be back when I watch it
Edo is located in a straight line from Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The place where Ieyasu sleeps. Even after Ieyasu's death, he wanted to keep Edo and Japan safe, peaceful, and prosperous.
I hope God will punish the current Kishida administration, which is the pet dog of Biden, Obama, and the US ambassador to Japan. The current Prime Minister of Japan has an approval rating of 10%, the lowest in the world.😂
I'm sure that it was Ieyasu's will that it was released at this timing, and the timing is coincidental, as it should be a wake-up call.🧐🙏
If you come to Japan, be sure to visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine 👍
Nikko also has a movie village that recreates Edo.
0:45 uh, wtf is happening here?
Haha, I was about to talk about the completely wrong show and Steejo corrected me. - Suzy

new sub here! love your style
Wtf do you mean game of thrones of Japan
Pirate ship lol
In the original story, Blackthorne jumped after Rodrigues to save him from the stormy waters.
He also saved the guy who got cooked in the pot.
In this adaptation of the story, he just comes across as some asshole. :(
Just saying but you are very disrespectful. Do you not have the concept of honor in your country.
I don't believe that we should just be killing people (or forcing them to kill themselves through societal pressure) for the slightest misdemeanor, no. - Steejo
I think they didn't mean to disrespect. Just shocked because of different cultures and values. Today Japan is already westernized so the values is more aligned with them.
>honor
>Kill a baby because of the dumb father

Could’ve bet big money we weren’t going to get any excessive waterworks over the babies death sentence, nor the man being boiled alive, as we would have over any random animal’s death … 🤷🏾♂️
Thank you for reacting to this favorite series of mine. Of course i watched the original back in the 80's and i read the book also. Not having cable or satellite dish i thank you especially for reacting to this show.
the GoT of japan. What does that even mean
I’m so glad you are doing this series! I just started watching it last night and ended up staying up until 2am watching the first two episodes. I remember this being a big deal as a miniseries when I was a little kid. So far, it’s really good!
