NIGHTMARE SITUATION for the 2024 Good Guys Nationals Columbus!

- This is not at ALL what I was hoping to film but as I stopped by the Ohio State Fairgrounds I HAD to get out and film. The 2024 Good Guys Nationals are this weekend here in Columbus Ohio and to say we are not prepared or putting our best foot forward is a MASSIVE understatement. What has been for years been billed as the largest hot rod show is about to run into a construction / destruction situation that is nothing short of inexcusable!
For 26 years the Summit Racing Nationals presented by PPG has called this location home for the crown jewel event of the season, yearly seeing between 5 and 6,000 cars, trucks, hot rods, customs, muscle cars, classics, and everything you could possibly imagine. These vehicles are strewn across the grounds in every possible spot that can be found, well this year it's entirely different. There's heavy construction going on all over. Several buildings have been torn down. Concrete and Asphalt being poured. Dirt, dust, debris everywhere. This venue is anything BUT ready to host an event that brings MILLIONS of dollars to the city of Columbus.
I wish this wasn't a video I was making. I wish this wasn't something I was sharing. I wish I was excited for this event I've been going to since I was a kid. Unfortunately, I'm terrified, and I feel responsible to warn everyone coming just what they are likely going to be getting themselves into. Let's hope an Automotive Miracle happens between now and Friday!
Everyone take a deep breath. The construction will not affect the event. There will be no construction during the event. There are no potholes, nails in the road, or gravel roads that anyone will have to drive on. Two areas of the event are closed off from public access, but again will not affect the event. The cruising lane has been adjusted but still maintains the same route. We have worked closely with the Ohio Events Center, who have their fair the weekend after our event, to make sure the facility is in good condition to hold an event. Do not let this video scare you away. It is all under control. Please do not let this stop you from enjoying your time at the 26th Summit Racing Nationals presented by PPG. Don't let a video title scare you from attending.

The Greater Columbus economy is huge. Comparatively speaking this isn't that big of an event.
More than 1 million people attended last year’s Ohio State Fair, which ran from July 26-Aug. 6, the Ohio Expo Center announced in its end-of-fair wrap-up on Aug. 8. That’s a record-breaking number for the 12-day fair. Overall fair attendance increased by 16.7% in 2023.
The 2023 state fair also broke the single-day attendance record, set a decade ago. Single-day attendance on Aug. 5 was 119,660. Prior to 2023, the single-day attendance record was 115,288, set on Sunday, July 28, 2013.
So "embarrassing & Nightmare" may be a bit strong?
I live in Columbus, and I am glad that the fairgrounds are being renovated. It's nice to see our tax dollars spent on something worthwhile. It may be an inconvenience this year but think about next year and how nice it will be.
These are expensive cars that are meticulously detailed. Any constructions site nearby will result in dust- there is no way to prevent that. The organizers will not be happy
Would love to do a follow up video to this if anyone is available today or tomorrow to clarify the situation and show what is being done to address the issues I show and express here. I definitely want to be fair and transparent on the coverage and as always will be attending myself.
I also live in Columbus and it's definitely good to see our tax dollars going to upgrading things that need upgraded for the greater good of the community. Unfortunately this project is already behind schedule and also a 3 YEAR project, so it won't be done until at best 2026 as per publicly available information.
This weekend will be my very first time at this event and I was really looking forward to seeing it. Watching this has really stuck a dagger in my heart.

@@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin I’m some what local to the fairgrounds and have attended the show for many years and Columbus does a great job of adjusting in the fly.
Maybe at the end of the weekend everyone will look back and say “it wasn’t ideal, but we had fun anyway and the Goodguys team did their best given the circumstances. Imagine how nice the fairgrounds will be next year and the years to follow.”
Instead of blaming the promoter and amplifying negativity, maybe some rodders will jump in and offer to help? It’s a proven fact that helping instead of harping makes ya feel better 🤙🏼🤙🏼

Not the largest show in the country by several thousand vehicles. You might want check out the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY and the MSRA Back to the 50's Weekend in St. Paul, MN. Columbus is a nice show, just not the largest. Feel sorry for GG, fairgrounds have to get stuff done while they can, I'm sure they will get it worked out.
I was on site last Sunday and saw NO NAILS, OR SHRAPNEL, anywhere. Relax everything will be fine.

That's definitely part of where my mind went with this as well. And we have done more than our share of over policing the cruisers over the years as well. My MAIN concern is/was Hey, Ho, Way to go Ohio!
Thanks for the heads up. This year, I will be visiting the hotels and motels in the area and do my own little car show. The fairgrounds looks like a war zone.This is some really bad planning by the powers in charge. Hopefully, we don't lose this great automotive event like we did The Street Rod Nationals so many years ago!
That's absolutely a good way to plan, even if the show at the fair grounds itself is a little sub par, there should still be plenty of fun to be had around town and at the hotels. Columbus has unfortunately taken a lot of steps in the wrong direction with a lot of this over the years, no doubt about it.

No chance for shade anywhere. Restroom facilities are going to be a joke! I guess one can utilize the horse and animal stalls.
Shade is always a challenge at any event hosted at the Ohio Fair Grounds, can't help ya much there unfortunately. But there's been a whole lot of progress since last I was there, just posted a new follow up video
Head on over to dragway 42 west Salem ohio. Gassers, vintage dragsters, swapmeet, carshow, bands!! And camping. NO Construction...
Or national trail raceway, to the east off 70.

Good guys, knew about this months ago, and I get it cars are expensive, but this fair grounds is used for hundreds of events per year, and none have been effected yet. The car show won't be either. 2 places won't be able to be used, that's all. This is one of the best construction companies in the state, I hope there's an apology video after the show goes off successfully.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I have been planning to attend the event this year with much anticipation. Luckily, I haven't registered or arranged a hotel yet. What a disappointment! I skipped last year to attend SETN instead. I know it's a bit of work, and not even sure if you'll see this, but please keep us posted. Maybe by Friday things will be looking much better.

We were going to Good Guys for my birthday weekend. Kids were coming home and we were going to actually have a whole weekend of just hanging out, seeing some pretty amazing cars that we ALL enjoy. This is nuts!
I'll be there myself all weekend, as I am EVERY year. I support this event, and support the hot rod community as a whole. But this is certainly not the environment I would hope to be bringing the best of the best of the hot rod community to. I'm sure we'll all manage to have a lot of fun regardless though, and happy early Birthday to you!

This is my first experience as far as I know but... man I can't believe what I'm seeing. With Good Guys Nationals this weekend and the State Fair 2 weeks away... how in the WORLD is this a good idea?

Folks don’t have any idea how difficult it can be to bring a project of this magnitude together and to be able to get all the subs not only scheduled but to show up and complete their tasks on time while keeping a place like this open because you don’t cancel events of this size for remodeling and upgrades , the public has to put on their big girl panties, pull up their bootstraps and move forward! Sure, the show will suck this year but just think how nice it will be next year!!! It’s no different at all than all the highway construction while on summer vacation, and all the holidays headed to grandmas house, it’s just part of life in a civilized country

@@johnsarian_cuto the city government it is just a car show for us unimportant car enthusiasts. Doesn't matter how much revenue the show brings to the city, if it is car related it is evil and unimportant so they don't care.
The wife and I live in the Utica area, and we go every year and bring our hotrod but not this year and maybe next. We went by the fairgrounds about a month ago and decided not to go. Our hot rod sits to low for any kind of bumps or potholes, plus when you have about a 100K invested and 25 years its not worth it.
That's exactly my concern, for the daily driver vehicles and even the stuff people take on Power Tour, that's one thing. Those are road cars and street driven hot rods. For high dollar builds which this show SPECIFICALLY is very well known for... well everyone can make their own decision.

Pretty much the same exact thing happened at the Syracuse Nationals here in NY. About the same size venue. Best I can recall they put up construction fence around the obstacles and let people park wherever. It was actually two years of construction but the result was an absolutely massive indoor venue with most importantly: AIR Conditioning! It’s going to be ok, I promise. Not ideal but people will adapt. Behind the scenes I can assure you are no less that 30 heads of departments ranging from engineers to EMT’s, trash collectors to the trolly director. It’s all been planned out. But just to forewarn there will be minimal cleanup, they’ll move most of the equipment out of the way but that’s about it.
FYI- They don’t stop construction during the events either.
@@RustyZipperand your car is not displayed 10’ away from a trackhoe and concrete breaker either!! All the construction will be behind the chain link fence required by OSHA regulations. You probably travel hwy construction and city construction every day and how many times has your $50k+ daily driver been damaged?

@@1982MCI - I have no idea why you’re so angry at me. 🤷♂️ I’m just telling you what happened at the Syracuse Nationals a few years back, it’s pretty much the same exact venue for NYS. They kept working during the show because I had to listen to the annoying back up alarm any time they move the man lifts and there was plenty of the construction crew walking around checking out the cars during their breaks. Construction lasted 2-3 years as well.

Thanks for posting this video. I'm sure Goodguys is putting as positive a spin on this as possible. From what I saw in your video, I'm skeptical that they will have the Expo Center cleaned up enough by Friday. You've at least given everyone a heads-up about the construction so they can make an informed decision whether or not to attend or bring their car. That's what's important. Shame on Goodguys for not mentioning anything about the construction on its website.
You 100% understand the point of me making this video. It's to inform and let everyone understand what's going on, and the reality on the ground as it was when I shot this video. I'm HOPING a lot of this can get cleaned up and set right for the Good Guys to roll into town and that we'll be able to pull off yet another great Hot Rod weekend.
I was totally shocked myself that I've seen absolutely NOTHING about this mentioned anywhere, which is why I decided to shoot what I did and share it. If it was something like Power Tour where we are rolling in, hanging out for a couple of hours with street cars that get dirty and dusty and driven, that's one thing
We are bidding on the project. Multiple new buildings going up. Will be a mess next year, also.
As I understand this, it's a multi year project going until at least 2026, most of us, myself included, the actual scale of the project and renovations. Maybe to untrained eye that DOESN'T work in construction this looks more scary than it is.
It’s simple, everyday progress Austin and there’s no way of getting around it at some point unless you’ve got an auxiliary site to move it to so you can shut the entire venue down. People want progress but then never want to be inconvenienced by the progress getting done and want it done overnight. That’s what I was saying in my other comment last night about most folks not understanding what it takes for everyone involved to bring these scale of projects together, there’s no way to bring them together overnight and like it or not, someone having a venue is gonna get inconvenienced. It sucks, but it’s progress. Remember airport and highway construction? Always seems to take forever but you always enjoy it much more once it’s done, and this will be no different. It’s gonna be ok, you’ve got hundreds of professionals that understand what’s happening this weekend and will not allow Good Guys to fail or deliver a poor time to anyone. Go, enjoy yourself, be positive, have a shot of something, and report back to us on the great weekend you had!! My brother still lives in Columbus so I’ll get a report from him as well.

I agree. Good guy’s were aware of the construction. Maybe less parking but I’m sure everything will be OK. No reason to cause panic.

It’s fine, what’s not fine is I work in Columbus every day and this video is the first I’ve heard about it this year. To me this is nothing but great marketing

There is a Friday Night Test & Tune at Trails from 3pm - 9pm which should be quite the showing

I can't even imagine bringing a top dollar years long build and even chancing it in this situation. Many of the best will go straight into a building but for everyone else I have no clue how they are going to make this work.

With the lost of some parking why doesn't GG do away with the auto cross. Been there for years and park on that side. Never been a lot of people watching. There is a few of the sponsors that compete. Maybe that is why.
This AutoX is definitely still happening, it's just moving to the front of the show instead of the back corner where it usually was. The parking is a major concern, most years especially when the weather is good there's not much "extra" space left so this could get very tricky.

You are whining way to much about maybe 10% of the parking being taken up. When in all reality the attendance has been down overall since covid. Never seen someone get so "torn up" over something like this.
Any year where the weather has been good, which it will be this year, the entire fairgrounds has been packed with very little room to spare. You've easily lost more than 10% of the parking space, and they are now having to relocate the AutoX from a back corner to the front corner losing even more space we never used for parking.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, I'm simply showing the reality on the ground as it was when I was there and giving my opinion as to what that likely means for the event.
I dont know what goodguys you go to but its far from packed. The whole back 1/3 of it towards Clara between 11th and 17th is always empty. The grounds on the north side of 17th is never full. Youre doing this for views and i get it. But this is nonsense. You want people to come to it and your video is doing the exact opposite. For the past few years, aattendance has been down, attendance down. It's barely half the size of NSRA nationals in KY. @AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin

They do it here for the Nascar races as well, it's almost as if politicians and city councils that do not like car culture are the ones in charge of planning, Just my thought anyway.
I don't want to get toooooo deep into the weeds with the politics of all this but Columbus and Ohio in general has done an incredible job of screwing up car culture and chasing away numerous events.

I quit going to the car show when they decided to put a tax and fees on the tickets.now cost short of 30 bucks and 10 bucks to park.not worth it.just going to local carshows

Lol yes very very true. Most of us get grumpy just being in line for a few minutes to get credentials let alone our pride and joy picking up dirt/dust/debris. At least with this video going up people will known what to expect, maybe it will turn out to be better than it looks at this point!
In my humble opinion, if you wanted to support this organization and classic car shows for years to come, you wouldn’t post a video like this. Loyalty builds strong community. Take the smallest inconvenience and turn it into a RUclips video with huge impact. Everyone in the comments complaining are the same people that pout when they don’t get their Top 100 award (participation trophy)
I absolutely support classic cars, hot rods, and the entire automotive community, that's the reason I MADE this video. I WANT people to show up and have a good time, to enjoy themselves and the thousands of gorgeous awesome cars people have spent thousands of dollars and often years of their lives to create. But I ALSO want those people to understand the reality on the ground as it is and what they are likely going to see when they get here.
This show is a must every single year, I attend all 3 days of the event EVERY year and it's easily the best weekend of the summer in Columbus. I'll be there every single day this year, shooting footage and sharing the experience as I always do.

I'm working on getting in touch with someone from GG to be able to offer their side and do a follow up. This wasn't a planned video I just happened upon the situation and started filming with my phone. Believe me I'm trying to be as fair and transparent as possible with this.

Agreed. I'm sure there will be a whole lot of cleaning and tidying between now and when the show starts, but there's only so much that can be done.

It sucks... But why act like it's going away permanently... GG is rolling with the punches and trying to make it happen. Would you rather have a weekend with no hotrods?? Apparently it will be built into a better venue... So just go and have a good time. Stop being dramatic.

Definitely NOT coming down this year.
I love the show, and hate the idea of losing it. But every year, multiple cars are stolen from hotels around the fairgrounds. It is a terrible area. Most people now stay up at the Polaris area. It is a great spot every night after the car show. With the fairgrounds being a mess, I wouldn't be surprised if everyone just says "Screw it", we'll hang out up here all day too.
My truck was stolen in Polaris two years ago. All hell breaks loose at the Quaker steak & lube at night. It’s a shitshow

None of that will be done by Thursday. Your talking tens of millions in improvements being done here and that doesn’t get done overnight bd be it’s gotta get done at some point and you have to schedule around contractors, not venues on projects of this size. Some folks will be inconvenienced and either turned away or located at auxiliary lots, etc, but what’s behind fence will not be cleaned up or finished by the weekend, that just ain’t happening

@@Troy_In_The_80s They make daily drivers. Comfortable, good on gas, that safety rating thing. Once you're bored of it, they make great hotrods with lowered suspension and LS swaps.

Are you saying you did not know about the construction. And you are embarrassed. Mr Austin apparently you don't know how Columbus really is they don't give two shits about some car show for us hot rodders. Now don't get me wrong I have worked for Turner construction and when they set their mind to it they will do everything within their power to get that place cleaned up. Every man they have available will be there in the next 2 days to try to help clean that place up they will have street sweepers in there and everything they can to try to do what they can. Will it be perfect by no means will it be perfect. Nothing about Columbus is perfect in fact Columbus sucks. This construction was already supposed to been done but nothing in construction is ever complete by the deadline date. So it's going to be what it is and we are going to have to live with it. Yes it sucks. Everybody's just going to have to enjoy what they can. And make the best of it

What you believe is terrible is growing the Fairgrounds. Rome wasn’t built in a day and it takes time change what needs to be done. I hate seeing the fairgrounds change myself. Wished the fair would go back to what it was originally. Complaining fixes nothing! Posting a video to make people not want to come to kill attendees makes no sense at all. This is what will kill the show for years to come.
Hero or zero? If it turns out the concern was un-warranted and some cancel their participation or forewarning participants should they decide to attend after viewing this vid, either way the organizers are not going to appreciate this vid. I can here their phones ringing off the hook at the busiest, pre-show time. Good luck.
That's highly possible however the people driving from hours or states away have every right to understand what they are driving into. There's zero mention I have seen anywhere about the fact 1/3rd of the venue is under construction and the hazards that likely await. As I'm watching now I even got a COMMERCIAL for the event showing areas that are literally torn down and dirt. I'm certainly willing to eat my words and do a follow up video if the event goes well and have no problem admitting I'm wrong when and if I am. In this case, giving people the knowledge of what the venue is like currently is valuable.
