The Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1933 was an historic, and memorable event. However, history shows that the Great Atlantic Storm of 1933 was not the worst storm to hit Norfolk, VA. That honor goes to the category 4 to 5ish 1821 Norfolk - Long Island Hurricane. It's all but forgotten today, but we should see this as a warning because it may happen again. The storm is believed to have brought an estimated 15 foot storm surge, and 145 mph winds to Norfolk. It also may have impacted Norfolk's economy for 20 years after it. This is because people left Norfolk, and didn't come back. This storm wasn't finished as it even hit New York City as a category 3 hurricane. Fact is, this was a fast moving hurricane that caused 40+ deaths, and caused $200,000 in damage in 1821 money. Now, if a storm like it ever happens again, it would be the stuff of Nightmares. A massive death toll along with the fact it would be a 150 to 300 billion dollar disaster shows that real well.
