Folks need to see the larger picture here. The ACC including UNC is locked into a bad football contract with ESPN thru 2036. Clemson and FSU are suing to get out of it. The SEC and Big 10 want all the dominant football programs and has it's eyes on UNC, but football at UNC has been slightly above average. UNC recognized that despite their dominance in basketball, football is king and they need to either catch up or be left behind financially and reputationally. If Belichick can make them a perennial playoff contender, their investment will pay off in spades, either by being at the top of the ACC, or being courted to join the SEC or Big 10. Bottom line is that UNC is a dominant athletic school EXCEPT in the #1 cash sport. They just made a major move to fix that problem, and served notice to the ACC that it's game on. Selah

Wreck Talk is tough! I watch his show from time to time. He keeps it real. Tells things as he sees it. And doesn't hold back. Like Bill Belichick, a lot of people probably won't be able to handle his brashness. And while most times he's on point I don't necessarily agree with his assessment on Carolina this time. 1) Major funding is already flowing into the University like never before. How fast did 100s of millions of dollars suddenly become available for a mega coaching salary and assisting staff over the course of the next five years!!!! 2)The upgrade that's coming to turn the Carolina facilities into a NFL showstopper will make the Panthers jealous! LOL! 3) Even if he only stays a year, getting the Carolina program to the next level has already been set in motion whatever happens game-wise over the course of 2025. 4) Scary thought for everybody on the schedule! He just might turn out to be an amazing college coach, lead them to a national ranking, and a spot in the CFP.

In my eyes I believe this is going to go one of two ways. 1. Bill gives 5 years of great coaching and Unc makes some noise but then once his son shows as Hc we have to go back to the drawing board. 2. Bill gives 5 years of great coaching Unc contends and then his son inherits Bills coaching ability and Unc is set up for greatness for the next 30 years. Either way aside from John Sumral at Tulane I think this was the best hire and Unc will have a quick turnaround. GO HEELZ!

I'm not sure what impression people are under for how football works, but Bill Belichick is the greatest football mind, greatest defensive strategist, and greatest football educator on the planet... Easy, bar none, not even close. I am a lifelong football nerd. The thing that astonishes me most about the general football watching masses is their lack of reality for coaching and what it accomplishes. How responsible coaching is for any amount of success you have. People seem to watch football like a pickup game, where it's just QBs and WRs running around out there -- no defense, no schematics, no in game adjustments, etc. Rather than the actual pre-planned chess match that is taught and then drilled into the players to the point of (hopeful) perfection. Their ability to replicate that on gameday.
To cut through a lot of preamble, I'll just say this... Tom Brady was a backup QB at Michigan who had never won a single ring in HS or college (Griese). Edelman was an option QB in Division III, Matt Slater wasn't the greatest special teams player on the planet at UCLA, nobody knew who Rob Gronkowski was at Arizona, on and on and on. Coaches build and develop the players. It's an uncomfortable ego play that coaches have to tip-toe around and provide all of the finished product credit to the players (where it rightfully belongs for achieving it), but it shouldn't be at the dismissal of the coaching providing every bit of what is accomplished on the field.
Belichick hand picked and developed every coach and player in the New England dynasty, much to the bewilderment of most Pats fans. While they all clamored for big names and #1 WRs, they didn't seem to ever notice that he never followed that plan. He built from scratch, with guys that everyone screamed about when selected/acquired. It was actually a hilarious behavioral experiment to watch. He never built it with Calvin Johnsons or Adrian Petersons (as everyone believes it works), but people never seemed to notice or comprehend the secret sauce...
Character, work, preparation, developing up at a higher, harder level than everyone else around. Drilling fundamentals and techniques, so they are responsively replicated better than the opposition when they match up. The entire scheme scouted and developed by the coaches... People just don't seem to get this process and who runs the show. They look at it as coaches/teams getting "lucky" when they "get a good player". BB didn't get lucky that he simply "picked" 1,000 players over those 20 years... the 1,000 players were lucky they came to BB. That's the only way the math works.
Every coach in the sport reveres him as the best because he is. Robert Kraft was operating under a hilariously wildly ignorant fantasy as to who was responsible for putting the football in the football. He made Tom Brady, not vice versa. It's not a coincidence that a lumpy, mediocre-armed, backup QB from Michigan became what he did when he linked up with the greatest defensive mind and football educator on the planet. That's where he learned football, how to read and kill a defense, everything. Not Brady in a vacuum. Same thing for every other player that magically developed the exact same work ethic and football level that they did...
Merry Christmas, Tar Heel nation! Make no mistake: this is the single greatest event in the history of your football program.

The Fedora route? Hire some OC or DC from some conferences 3rd or 4th best team and hope it works out? His recruiting probably wouldn’t be much different than Mack Brown’s if he’s lucky. If he did have success he would probably get offered a better job like Duke’s last coach did. I love this move!

If Bill succeeds and gets us to the playoffs that is a success, but even if he only gets us to 8-9 wins again and retires he has set up UNC to be a perennial powerhouse by just getting the university to start giving serious funding to coaching and NIL which will make UNC super appealing to future coaches.

Welcome to big time college football. That is what North Carolina fans should be happy about. Basketball is never and HAS NEVER been the big dawg of college athletics.
Mike Tranghese when we was commissioner of the Big East basically told them that had to have Penn State. The AD’s pressed back saying Penn state wasn’t a good basketball program. Tranghese told them they would rue the day they turned them down, that I would kill the conference. And damn, if he wasn’t a prophet.
As for Belichick getting total control? Great. No disrespect to Bubba, but pandering to the wine 🍷 and cheese crowd of pseudo intellectuals at UNC and thinking basketball is the focus is asinine. You now have a man who will create a football culture at North Carolina.
It’s the most popular sport in this country, by a large margin. ESPN broadcasts high school games. Why does UNC in the past lose recruits to FSU and Clemson? Those are football schools. Football culture.
Make no mistake. Bill is a teacher first and foremost. A football lifer who lives to teach the game.
Russ, Belichick never pulled Bledsoe. Bledsoe got hit by Mo Lewis and damn near died on the field. Brady came in out of necessity. Drew just never got his job back.
And I hate this Belichick can’t coach and was made by Brady. What was Nick Sabans record at Michigan state? Did he leave and go to LSU and suddenly learn to coach? Or did he simply have much better talent?

That guy is clueless. I guess he thought Saban was a spring chicken. His coach does all that stuff because his team is poor. It’s sad that such scrubs have beaten us so often.

He was a below average NFL coach when he didn’t have the best QB to ever play the game under center. He got fired from his last job and had to settle for an ACC bottom feeder position because no one else wanted him. He’s 73 years old. He’s never coached college ball. He’s never recruited.
The hype around this “Hail Mary” hire reminds me of when the Jags hired Urban Meyer. I predict disaster.

You’re still completely focused on Bill. That’s fine. But regardless of how this plays out it was a HUGE win for UNC.

I'm a tarheel fan i will say i do like the football but i will say basketball put unc on the map and that's never going to change

Basketball did out UNC on the map, but if you don’t change with the times (I.e. understand football is king) that idol of UNC basketball will fall into obscurity as well. I love Carolina. A strong football program is what keeps a strong basketball program in this NEW ERA of college athletics.

If we're relying on basketball with Hubert Davis in 2024 to carry the athletic programs, UNC is screwed. Football has and will always be the needle mover

Don't compare Donald Trump to this conversation Donald Trump says crappie things and he was a bad president and he's going to be a bad president. So yes not compare this to unc football

I need you to swallow your emotions for just a second…..take a deep breath…..are you with me? It was an analogy. A comparable one to the statement that was made at that. This is a big boy conversation.
