  • This is an early model Cyrus 3 with the classic flashing red light problem.
The output transistors at first appeared ok but on further inspection we see that these are faulty as well as the driver devices. Replacing these and a bunch of dry capacitors all is well once more.

Here I am, sitting in a shed on a remote S Island station in NZ, freezing my farkin’ bollocks off. My Cyrus 3 has died. Bought it new in 1993 in Nottingham, with a PSX and Mission 753s and a Mission sub and a Phillips CD850. I’m bereft. No tunes and it’s Saturday night. Now what? I can fix pretty much anything mechanical or auto electrical to be fair. But the inside of that amp gives me the shits. I’m clueless with electronics.
But hang on. WTF? There’s a fellow Scottisher who knows this shit! One week later, some new kit and some parts I don’t really understand properly AND I’VE FIXED IT MYSELF! The exact same amp (same early cross head screws!), same problem, same fix and we have bangin’ tunes again!
God bless you mate. I’d never in a million years have thought I’d fix it myself. Thank you.

It always amazes me of the skill of the engineers that design and manufacture these products is so good, but for some reason they have no idea that capacitors really don't like getting hot. It still happens widely, even today. I have just finished reviewing a new class D amplifier on my channel and the main large electrolytic caps are actually touching the heatsinks. You just know that in the future, they will fail. Just a matter of time.
On another point, how come you get so many Cyrus amplifiers to fix? I've only had one to repair ever!

2:03 "These parts to have a limited life"
That tells you all you need to know. Much as I loved my Cyrus amps, they all went 'Pop' in a very short amount of time.

I am currently struggling with my Cyrus 3i. It has some crackling sounds in the background on all its channels when playing music. Did you experience something similar with these devices, or do you have an idea, what the issue could be in this regards?

Hi, what's the process so it runs on its own power supply, I've moved the two jumpers but I'm still getting a red Led flashing on start up.
    Thanks

Have you ever seen one of these with an erratic volume control where the LEDs jump around randomly instead of moving smoothly and relevant to the rotation of the knob? I have such a unit, and I suspected the rotary encoder to be bad so I replaced it but still the problem exists.

I suspect you may have a problem with the programmable part on the front panel board. These seem particularly sensitive on the 3 and of course are a Cyrus specific part

@@myalbatech I'm generally scathing of stuff that comes out of china, but these days I am seeing more and more stuff that's been made in the UK that's just awful. These Mission units are no exception, and you can add a lot of the Cambridge Audio stuff to that as well. Don't even get me started on Musical Fidelity junk.
I suspected the microprocessor on the panel might be the issue. I wonder if Mission can even supply them now?

What do you use as the fuse resistor?

    • @myalbatech
      @myalbatech  Год назад

It varies depending on the unit, it was 22R in this case.

My friends Cyrus 3 producers a buzzing/ hum when it's been on for about 20 mins , any ideas? Is it a easy fix, I'm fine with a soldering iron , but I heard you comment on lifting the traces.

Couldn't really say without seeing it. Yes, be careful soldering, the traces peel off as soon as you look at them.
