    In this video:
    There’s no doubt that Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) intended to have a successful journey when his expedition set off from Spain on September 20, 1519. He had planned for the departure meticulously, hoping to prove that people could sail all the way around the world, and to be the first to do it. His ambition was spurred on by the adventures of previous explorers, such as Christopher Columbus and Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the man who marched across the Panamanian isthmus to the Pacific Ocean. There was little doubt in Magellan’s mind that it could be done.

    Juan Sebastián Elcano was a Spanish explorer of Basque origin who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth. After Magellan's death in the Philippines, Elcano took command of the carrack Victoria from the Moluccas to Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Spain en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Sebasti%C3%A1n_Elcano

  • @puma7171
    @puma7171 3 года назад +8

    Magellan searched and found the West-passage. It was Elcano who decided to go back around Africa, and therefore took the decision to circumnavigate. Magellan had nothing to do with a circumnavigation. Also circumnavigation is usually thought of as a voyage on a specific ship, so the sailors of the Victoria were truly the first "circumnavigators", whoever crossed all longitudes before in some other way. (Travalling from America to Asia by plane by East, then some time later by West doesn't make you a circumnavigator....).

    Enrique from the island of Maluku in Indonesia the island of Maluku is a producer of spices that Europeans are looking for because at that time spices were worth gold in the past, that's why ferdinand magellanes included everyone on Enrique's voyage. because Enrique knows that the island that produces the spices that Europeans are looking for is on the island of MALUKU, Indonesia. And why is Enrique famous for his black skin, because Enrique comes from the MELANESIA race, which is identical to the people who live on the island of MALUKU. And if anyone asks why Enrique can speak Malay, it's because Enrique once stopped and lived for quite a long time on the southern island of Sumatra and there was a Malay kingdom called Sriwijaya and the Sriwijaya kingdom controlled the Malacca Straits trade. And the power of the Sriwijaya kingdom included BELITUNG (Indonesia), TAMASEK (Singapore), MALAKA (Malaysia). If someone thinks that Enrique is a Malay, that's a HOAX. Malays don't have black skin from birth. If you don't believe me, just find out on Google or other social media. What is MALUKU Island? what is the producer on the island of MALUKU? And the Melanesian Race. sorry if anyone is offended, I'm just giving information as clearly as clearly as to who Enrique is from MALUKU in Indonesia, really, thank you.

    While it's popular to say that Magellan set out from Spain, he had in fact arrived there only after visiting the far East, and using the latter as his starting point for his trip around the world, he did in fact circumnavigate the globe completely from a longitude standpoint. But the question is still valid.

    • @wailinburnin
      @wailinburnin 8 лет назад

      +J.W. Braun From Pigafata's account, Magellan, himself, probably did not complete the circumnavigation (probably was not far enough east on his initial trip), but you are essentially right. Enrique is credited with being the first to recognize a common language and therefore that they had reached the "Spice Islands". There is also the concept that you have to cross over your own track to claim completion. I once met a couple who sailed from Barcelona west, through both canals, and stopped in Menorca, moved ashore, so they, technically never have completed their circumnavigation!

In short, the first person was Juan Sebastián Elcano with another 17 spanish survivor. Something else is just speculation.
    Bonus: the second circumnavigation of the world was also spanish (look for Francisco de Hoces), where Elcano was part but he died. Only 10 survived, after discovery of many islands like Marshall. So Drake was the third.
    So basically the video name many times a guy who did not success (Magellan), half of the video is about a theory that cannot be proved, and the name of the actual first person to circumnavigate the world is only named once. Drake is also named once, but he was the third, not the second. Why drake story is here? Why not the seventh circumnavigation of the word? Or the 10th?

      @@BTI997 He might be from Maluku, Cebu, Melaka or Sumatra does not matter but your Srivijaya facts is flat out wrong. Srivijaya as a dominant power has long gone during that time (around 400-500 years before the the arrival of Portuguese) and in as early as 14th and 15th century Srivijaya has only become a nostalgia and has been a stuff of myth and legends preserved in books like "Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa". It was then replaced by Majapahit as a dominants power. When Majapahit was declining it was replaced by the newly formed Sultanate (with arrival of Islam) of Melaka, Acheh, Pasai, Demak and other smaller kingdoms (mostly Islamic) in Sumatra, Java and Malay peninsula. Before the arrival of the Portuguese, Melaka was the most successful kingdom/empire in that region spanning from Malay Peninsula to some part of Sumatra (through direct rule and vassal states). As legend/history says that a prince from Palembang (one of Srivijaya old cities), Parameswara who made Melaka as a successful trading port. You could say that Melaka in a way was the successor of Srivijaya but not Srivijaya it self. It is not the same case as Eastern Roman (Byzantine) was the continuation of the Roman empire. As for Enrique, dark skin can be interpreted in so many different ways especially coming from European accounts. Melaka was already a multicultural society along with international residents consists of Malay, Chinese, Arab, Guajarati, Sumatran, Javanese, Spice Islands (Maluku/Sulawesi) and many more. Maybe Enrique is a mixed race, who knows, judging from his ability to speak many language it is possible as inter-marriage is common in Melaka during that time. Another possibility is that he acquired that skill in a place like Melaka. Even If he is not from Melaka it is very likely he is a resident there if we all can follow our logic. Anyway we all may be wrong because written records are not really well preserved. Only tales and legends and to argue tooth and nails about it is fruitless.

    Fernando de Magallanes, yes Fernando written in castillian, since he adopted the Spanish citizenship because he was insulted and hated by the king of Portugal, was the first man to propose the circumnavigation, the King of Spain accepted to pay the adventurous journey and presented Sebastian Elcano as second man in command. Magallanes died in the Philippines. So Elcano took the command, he arrived to Spain the 10th of August of 1522. This means Sebastian Elcano was the first man to achieve a circumnavigation along the rest of the surviving crew. The second time was also an Spanish achievement. Everything else is just bullshit from idiots who try to discredit it with dumbass ideas that have absolutely no historical basis.

    Magellan visited Ternate twice on his first voyage East (his cousin Francisco Serrão stayed behind as military advisor to the Sultan). Mactan in Phillipines (where Magellan died) is NORTHWEST of Ternate, so he DID complete a circumnavigation. Regardless of whoever else did, this whole thing is part of the old British academic tradition of discrediting Magellan to promote Walter Raleigh (who was a pirate, a mediocre navigator, and an appalling surveyor) as the 'Great Circumnavigator'.

    Our elementary books are really bad. Spain is always considered to be this cartoonish eviiiil empire that subjugated this land for more than 3 centuries. But looking at outside records, Magellan was a fairly chill guy and he died because he got mixed up in some tribal war. He wasnt even there to conquer anything.

    I've listened to books on tape re: the Conquistadors and sadly I was just too turned off by Magellan to get on board with the adventure.... he really seemed like a bloody & greedy opportunistic thug. They suffered hardships for sure, but inflicted plenty of grief and death on those they came across in the process.
    Columbus surprisingly was more likeable, because he was just so quirky. By all accounts he was deeply religious and never swore (virtually unheard of among sailors)... also he was so grossly wrong in what he thought he had discovered... though he was a remarkably skilled navigator, and quite clever, escaping impossible odds even when he was old and riddled with ailments. His son Ferdinand who traveled with him was far more respectful of the natives, though Columbus seemed to go back and forth between praising the locals and wanting to use them.
    Many of the Conquistadors seemed pretty crummy people, though undoubtedly brave. By many accounts Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was one of the few exceptions (literally "Cows Head", referring to an incident where his family had saved the monarchy), a seemingly quite decent man who came to explore the Americas and not just to hunt for gold.....

      Not exactly. His real name was Fernão de Magalhães, with a hard 'g'. In English it is Magellan, but British English usually uses the pronunciation with a hard 'g'; in American English it is usually with a soft 'g'.

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 7 лет назад

      pabmusic1 When C or G are followed by an I or an E they are by rule a soft C or G. So why the heck would the British choose the exception rather than the rule, especially when the original pronunciation in his native language is correct under the English rule?! It makes no sense!

    • @pabmusic1
      @pabmusic1 7 лет назад +1

      No, you're wrong. There is no 'rule', but it's true that what you say happens, happens. Usually. Exceptions include anything that (sort of) reproduces a foreign pronunciation. That's what happened here. The sound -ao was too much and became -an, but the rest was pretty well as pronounced in Portuguese (heard through British ears).
      Also, remember (1) 'g' was always hard in Old English (Anglo-Saxon) and (2) Celtic languages and place-names have hard 'g's. Try telling someone from Wales they should say Penjellion instead of Pengellion.

    When was the first successful-in-a-modern-sense circumnavigation, where everyone who left made it the whole way (no mutinies, no ships lost, no hostile natives)?

    Hmm. No mention of the brutal Magellan or his revenge on the mutinous crew? I'm not so sure he met an "untimely" death.

      This video is just to explore the main topic question, while giving a little summary of the expedition. Not to serve as a biography for Magellan.
      But given how the crew was mutinous, death was the acceptable punishment. And the betrayal of a part of the crew could jeopardize the rest of the crew. Since they would probably rely on the material or goods on the other ships.

    The target of Magellan was the spice islands not to do the circumnavigation the World.
    I was reading the book of Pigafeta. I dont believe in a part of the history. I think Magellan was killed by Spanyards and not in battle of Mactan near Cebu. Magellan faced some riots of Spanish sailors .
    Antonio Pegafeta gave the book to the Vatican to be published. The logbooks of ships disappeared. The battle of Mactan can have been invented.
    I like to add something over this history. Magellan was in Malacca in 1511 in the fleet of Afonso de Albuquerque. In investigation of this travel we must have in account the meridian of Cebu in Philippines and meridian of Straits of Malacca. It is not far if you calculate.

      Raul Oliveira proofs??? What is sure is that portugueses wanted to kill him and sent assassins to Spain who failed. And this is an historical documented fact, and not a theory like yours
