Wow. Thank You very very much Brother Clantis 🙏 This is some really good information you've presented, to help folks navigate the norms and manners of SA. 👍 I happily subscribed and just bought some Rooibos Tea to enjoy, while checking your other videos.😊
Wow...this is good information...especially the "rejection" part. It is SO important to learn a culture before visiting. I absolutely believe if I ask someone to go out, I should pay the bill. It was an old school thing; at least we did it in the 70s/80s. Excellent podcast Clantis!
I understand about inviting someone out I paying the bill. I had a debate about that with someone. Good video. Thanks for letting us know S. African culture.
Wow. The South African Black culture is as beautiful as the land. While we have many similarities, Ubuntu is something that we sadly do not have amongst Blacks here in the states. We would probably be better off if we did.
38:35 No Clantis I don't know guys who expect to have other guys pay for their Uber/ petrol or dinner bill/ drinks. Maybe that's a personal thing for you but I honestly don't know any man who expects other men to pay their way . Let's not use Ubuntu to exploit people . The spirit of Ubuntu is also about your pride and self respect and that's a fact. Imagine your woman hearing that you expect other men to pay your petrol/ Uber ,dinner & drinks when you go out . Haibo Clantis 😂 Its simple....if you are socializing with people who are above your tax bracket thats fine but just be upfront about it and accept that you won't join all their outings. Don't involve our culture to make excuses ... In our culture a man pays his own way Finish and Klaar.
@@ClantisPodcast No bhuti . I love you to bits but let's not misconstrue Ubuntu. Indoda takes care of his own expenses . No African custom dictates that a man should pay another man's bills. Hell no. If anything as an African man you are expected to have pride and carry your own weight . This is why its key to be honest to yourself and your friends and not be in a situation where you either have to live above your means or be in a situation where your friend is your " moreki" and you are his "ice boy ". If you guys are happy with that then fine... we see those situations . But to say its culturally appropriate is misleading and very wrong. If it was custom or culturally appropriate we wouldn't have terms like " ice boy " and "moreki".
@@dinaledi4085 Clantis is correct at that time stamp, that is very common in South Africa, he even went as far as explaining in detail, i think you are speaking from your own personal stance of pride and you are too emotional thats why his clarifications flew over you. Both of you, are NOT wrong.
@@neo5733Clantis mentioned custom and Ubuntu. All our customs in SA are patriarchal and are anchored around an alfa male stance . What alfa male would expect another man to pay his Uber ,dinner , drinks and Uber back home whenever he asks that they go out ? Please don't lie in the name of custom because what that does is bustardise our customs and traditions. Some of us have a bad habit of using custom or tradition to justify certain things when we deal with whites because we are taking advantage of the fact that they wouldn't know if we are lying or not. And we even laugh about it but that actually distorts white people's understanding of our customs . Then we turn around and become offended when they disrespect our customs. Let's avoid doing that with AA because they genuinely want to make a connection and learn about out customs and traditions .He also mentioned Ubuntu . Ubuntu teaches us to always be humble , generous and considerate. It teaches us to have manners and social etiquette more so to visitors as he correctly explained in the beginning. Then he later contradicts himself. How is it good manners or considerate to expect a visitor to cover your expenses every time he asks you to come out with him just because its after the 10th ? Ubuntu would actually dictate that you go out of your way to show courtesy to the visitor. Unfortunately reality is that with the economy the way it is it wouldn't be financially possible for most people to do that. Ubuntu is also about self respect . Okay let's leave custom and Ubuntu and look at things practically. Clantis says working class SAns don't have money after the 10th . So why are restaurants, taverns , shisanyamas , bars and clubs packed full after the 10th ? Because people typically socialise within their economic / tax bracket and thus go to spaces they can all afford individually .Men typically go out in groups of 3 or 4 or more right ? Are you saying one guy is paying for everyone's Uber, dinner and drinks ? . The reality is that because of the Rand/Dollar exchange most AA automatically become middle class, upper middle class or even elite / affluent when they relocate to SA . In the early 2000s when the black middle class ( commonly referred to as Black Diamonds) grew substantially we had these conversations . It's up to the friend with more money to be considerate when picking outings but it's not custom .Its just general common courtesy and social etiquette. I'm sure these conversations exist even amongst AA in the US. So typically the affluent friend will either go to a reasonable place cost wise or cover the bill if he picks an expensive place. That's normal anywhere in the world and in any culture. If you say he must always pay or he is expected to then he automatically becomes your "moreki" and you become his "ice boy". That's the reality whether you want to admit it or not . What custom would encourage a man to be an "ice boy"?
Ubuntu is culture, just like Isintu. Hence we learn it at home and not school. Ubuntu is ingrained in Isintu, so much so that describing Isintu without including Ubuntu is an incomplete definition. That's my 2 cents and I'm open to hear other people's views and disagreements ✌🏾
Anothet great podcast Brother Clantis! Trying to connect with you but i am confused by the multiple emails across YT and IG. Would you be so kind as to note, in a reply here, as to your preferred business email so i can reach out. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, Sister Debora🙏🏾 Yeah, these days it's about different strokes for different folks when it comes to hanging out with your homies.
@ClantisDumakude So true, I always say communication eliminates the gray areas.
Yeah I agree with you,I'm afraid to ask even little things you know, I know it's bad but it's hard to ask people for help
Asking is the most terrifying thing to do but so easy to do things for other people.
