Air Force in 1950's: Safety is more of a guideline than a rule
My dad was in the Air Force in the early mid 80s and got stationer in North Dakota for a bit. I didn't realize they kept planes going to Russia non stop and would turn around just before their air space and that they flew north to reach them. Can only imagine how much money it cost to keep planes running non stop and the personnel to keep them going.
I live in a 10 mile radius of this bomb. It’s cool hearing the story from the locals

Yoooo, imagine if all of the missing ones went off all at the same time
Nukes are pretty safe, it's pretty hard to accidently set them off, you can set them on fire hammer on them hours, shoot them, without them initiating and as it broke up it would have been impossible for it to initiate, to cause a nuclear initiation you need a lot of things to happen at precisely timed intervals on the scale of nano seconds otherwise it won't do squat. If one of the dozens of high explosive packages around the core fail to detonate, or detonate too late the fision core won't undergo fission as too many neutrons will escape the core. If the tritium bottle is placed just a few inches too far away or too close it will fail to initiate nuclear fusion in the secondary core. Heck there have been cases of planes carrying nuclear devices crashing and the devices left sitting in pools of burning jet fuel for hours without a nuclear initiation.
As for if they did undergo nuclear initiation, it wouldn't be anywhere near as bad as you describe (radiation sickness doesn't work that way, and it's only the short half life isotopes that are harmful, after 2 months these have decayed to non existent levels)
