I am 17 and i witness what other kids listen to daily... I absolutely love John Mayer (have seen him 4 times)... Derek Trucks is phenomenal... They brought light to guys like SRV and Buddy Guy and B.B. and Clapton for me... I have never been more proud to show off my music because i am showing things like the original recording of "Cold Shot" or "Crossroads" and live versions of "Scuttle Buttin' "... I love the blues and it surely isn't dead
John Mayer is the best modern guitarist of our day. Bringing the blues back, playing with the greats, it doesn't get any better than that. haven't seen him in concert in 2 years now. going into withdrawals....
bt whether or not people think that john mayer is gd at blues or not, he's makin todays people think bout the blues, and keepin it alive!!! its guys like him and joe bonamassa who r gonna keep it goin wen we loose legends like buddy nd bb
John Mayer playing his song with Jimi's guitar, Stevie's band and Buddy freaking guy on 2nd guitar...weather or not you like Johns "pop" music, hes the ones pushing the music we love to the mainstream...Go John!
I think Chris Layton has ADD... he always seems to either be bored, or just staring into nothing... or am I the one who's crazy? Love Double trouble, love JM and BG... what a great group of people to have in one room... THANK YOU for this upload!!!
im 13 and love playing blues on guitar and i go to the school in the city where everyone likes metal and pop not me i can sit hours on end bluesing along with my backing tracks love it.
It is good to see Double Trouble in videos again...such a solid rhythm section, any guitarist would probably give up just about anything to have a group backing them as solid as Chris and Tommy!!
Buddy guy is so experienced that he doesn't play the same song the same way twice. He tries it different ways, some are better than others. He's not off. Buddy guy was one of SRV infuences.
You're right about how Hendrix got a lot of his act from Buddy Guy. People who are fans of a particular musician often go into excess when describing the uniqueness of their favorite performer, especially the Hendrix fans. We all learn from the people who came before us, including Buddy Guy, he got a lot of his act - playing behind the head, his back, between his legs - from Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones!
Just read the latest Rolling Stone interview with Mayer. Sounds like a regular dude to me. Says it like it is and is pretty damn creative about it in the meantime. Thumbs up to your assessment. Oh well. You know. Imagine the concept of actually just being yourself....Life is just like that...and it happens. Good to see a talented eclectic like Mayer gift us with a bit of inspiration here. .
dang, there's always something that words can not described., when you see legends play. no matter how talented a guy like mayer is, simple lick from buddy cloud sweep off his feet
For all you JM haters out there (i.e. people who don't get music)...if you think Buddy Guy and Double Trouble would share the stage with anyone they don't respect you are nuts. Greatest player since SRV.
Thank you ivarus75, you have made my entire month, if not year. It feels like I am seeing an old friend for the first time in a long time. Thank you Thank you.
WHO is this John Mayers guy. He is blowing me away with his talent and technique...my opinion, he's gonna end up one of the greats someday!! The Tbear111
Thank you for laying it out. I agree with you completely. You gotta remember that Mayer also has to make a living, and his pop records are what did that for him. Now he's got the ability and the finances to branch out and experiment and put out new sounds with his name attached to them. I think mayer will bring new fans to the blues and there's nothing wrong with giving the blues more respect.
the thing about john mayer is, he went into a record studio wanting to be a solo guitar player and to be recorded. The label said they need a singer/guitar player, so here he is. I respect that he didn't give up. He made some down right chick songs. I respect his guitar playing though
John and BG are pretty good friends. The two often sit in together, and JM was on BGs last album Bring Em in. Say what you will about his voice, but the man can play.
I was lucky enough to see both BB and Buddy at a bluesfest about 8 years ago. Buddy came out and just blew the doors off the place, and sadly, people started leaving when BB was about half way through his set. BB still has it goin on, but Buddy Guy rips the cover off!
@TheWackojacko08 It's good that you're into blues at that age. I play rock and metal, but learning the blues took my playing to another level-it's all about playing with feeling and soul.
Yeah I agree maybe he doesnt have the best music but from a musicans stand point John Mayer is a great guitar player. Johns legit, hes got a great blues feel and he gets to play with all kinds of legends!
Buddy Guy set the pace for all modern guitarists in my opinion. Hendrix actually stole a lot of his stage antics from Buddy Guy. Playing behind his head, playing with his teeth, playing between his legs......all that was done first by Buddy Guy, whom Hendrix used to cancel his own shows to go see in concert. I'm a Hendrix fanatic, but Buddy Guy was a huge influence on a lot of modern guitar legends (Hendrix, SRV, Clapton) and was a huge source of inspiration.
@juanrules Actually, Jimi smashed the original guitar to smithereens on stage at Monterey. You can see the pieces of it in the Hendrix display at the EMP is Seattle. Fender Custom Shop produced a limited edition of this famous guitar, which is probably what John is playing.
That Mayer guy thinks he grabbed God by the balls...poor fool. However what a tasty solo by Buddy. Now that's a legend, I really get overwhelmed by his playing.
It's amazing how easily it just comes to some people...I know guys that have been playin for years, but I think you gotta have something real special to play the blues the way it's supposed to be played
all of you mayer haters keep in mind...john mayer is 30, and is already considered the best guitarist of our generation. why watch the video of john mayer if you dont dig his music dont waste our time...and go listen to some jack johnson.
I don't like John, but i appreciate what he's doing for the music, he is commercializing the blues. Every generation has his own of that kind, Eric was the first (and the best) perhaps, than SRV, today it is Bonamassa and Mayer maybe... For the few, it will be the way through them to the great blues giants like BB, Muddy, Howlin' Wolf...
Easiest way to sort out this little mess is that Buddy Guy is a legend in his own right but to some true 'Blues' lovers still a youngster...John Mayer is just the new breed, (a young Eric Clapton) maybe not in a true blues form but without a doubt the closest thing our generation can relate too. I don't think you can really compare him other than he's a very talented guiraist and he takes influences from people like Buddy and BB King...i bet we have this same converstaion in 30 years re John!
Well if you listen Mayers version of Bold as love and his own song Man on the side there he pretty much proves he can play lead guitar. And you have to remember he's still a young guy.. I like the guy and I hope he will continue making music because someday it's possible that he will make some records that will remain in history, I think he has all that potential.
@yeahright123go I think the reason people dislike Mayer is not because of his playing; indeed he is a good guitarist. Rather, it is because he is perceived to be egotistical, and sometimes his arrogance is reflected in his stage presence and music. The "greats" such as SRV, Hendrix and Clapton, were/are humble men, and part of what made them great is their genuine personalities. Mayer is not considered to be humble in that respect. Don't shoot me Mayer fans, this is merely an observation!
I wonder if you'll someday realize you won't get to play with BB King, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy, and get props from these legends as a guitarist and a muiscian.
We might as well set the record straight. John Mayer isn't SRV and he isn't Jimi Hendrix...but he is a damn fine guitar player. You can debate all day weather or not he has credibility but at the end of the day he is still a great musician that was finally able to set himself apart from his pop albums with Continuum. He's an accoplished blues player and we should enjoy him and thank him for bringing it back into the spotlight. He's had abig impact and I know that it will continue to get better.
I think comparing the two is pointless. They both excel in their own genres of music. If you think about it Buddy Guy rocks the guitar, and John Mayer has an awesome voice. What's there to argue about?
Yeah, you're right with your descriptions of Hendrix and SRV. Mayer, I'd say, is like an apologetic kind of blues. I mean, he comes from a pop background so it is gonna be a little less classic blues or whatever you wanna call it. Though "Gravity" and "Out of My Mind" are straight up sick.
i don't think it's fair to compare gutiarists like these, because i'm sure they could both play as well as each other, i think buddy guy and mayer are true musicians, they've realised that it's not about playing fast but playing beautifully and passionatly, and they both put as much into their music as each other...
this is great but I really liked it when they did this on Austin City Limits several years back. In that version John had this BADASS solo before bringing out Buddy. It was awesome.
how many of you got asked to play in B.B. King and Buddy Guy and John Schofield's albums? or have you ever played with Eric Clapton? its pathetic to see all the people tryna take this boy down, while the gods of electric guitar blues are gracing him=)
Fuck, imagine having buddy guy sit in on one of your songs, I know mayer's played with a lot of blues icons on old blues tracks, but this is something else, must have been one of the greatest moments in his life - next to fucking jennifer aniston. And the ignorant people who say he's a bad guitarist aren't even worth arguing with.
we all know what the REAL blues is...but listen, making it a race problem wouldn't keep me from loving and playing it. And I think that everyone could agree...'cause that's the blues.
For me, there is no "better", only a "different". It's a thing of individual liking. I like mayer and his sound a lot, because his sound is so "thick". But SRV, Hendrix, Buddy Guy and all the others are also great players, no matter which licks they copied. Just enjoy this incredible music!
Regarding Mayer's blues status, I think you guys don't see where blues is today. We're lucky it's even still around. And IMO John's a much better singer than guitar player, but to me, blues is about the feel. NOTHING more or less. If the feel isn't there, it isn't blues. It doesn't matter what scales or progressions you use, if it's blues, it's undeniable. John plays blues. Not great, but he plays it and he brings it to the masses. Which is a very good thing if you ask me.
guy who influenced SRV, guy's who played with him, and a guy who idolized him all playing together. superb
@Wilmer Andersson he was also his mentor
i can't even imagine the sensation of growing up loving some artists and then, they join you on stage to play your song
30 now. How’s life treating you man. As a 23 year old I hope the blues is still alive in you
How's 31 years treating you
That was beautiful. Mayer is so respectful of Buddy Guy. I love watching the two of them play!
John Mayer is the best modern guitarist of our day. Bringing the blues back, playing with the greats, it doesn't get any better than that. haven't seen him in concert in 2 years now. going into withdrawals....
This still applies
Johnny has come a long way. Buddy is a blues icon. Go johnny go.
It amazes me how Buddy Guy has such control of his instrument. Amazing.
bt whether or not people think that john mayer is gd at blues or not, he's makin todays people think bout the blues, and keepin it alive!!!
its guys like him and joe bonamassa who r gonna keep it goin wen we loose legends like buddy nd bb
John Mayer and Buddy Guy have so much influence to the younger generations they r the best! xD
Buddy guy can put blues in pop and make it pop! :)
Great buddy! ;)
Its truly a beautiful thing to see how music brings people together
Who else can combine Blues and Pop even close to Mayer!? He will be a legend
im 13 and love playing blues on guitar and i go to the school in the city where everyone likes metal and pop not me i can sit hours on end bluesing along with my backing tracks love it.
great song and video. 2 different eras, but such similar and great talents
If it weren't for Buddy Guy, I wouldn't be listening to this at all, lol. Fucking LOVE Buddy, man. Soulful legend.
It is good to see Double Trouble in videos again...such a solid rhythm section, any guitarist would probably give up just about anything to have a group backing them as solid as Chris and Tommy!!
that's one heck of a musical collaboration
John Mayer = Modern day Rock N Roll warrior.
Wooooo!! Listen to Buddy Guy! John's alright and all, but he just got cut. Buddy Guy. What a singer.
i love the back and forth between them at the end. awesome.
Oh man the subtlely in this song is absolutely killing me
Buddy guy is so experienced that he doesn't play the same song the same way twice. He tries it different ways, some are better than others. He's not off. Buddy guy was one of SRV infuences.
My friend, you are a genius. Very well said.
Buddy Guy you and John Mayer rocked it on that program (My favorite, SOUNDSTAGE) You guys work great together is what i'm trying to say! GOOD JOB!

And no doubt Buddy is one of the most beautiful person I ever met!
dang, there's always something that words can not described., when you see legends play. no matter how talented a guy like mayer is, simple lick from buddy cloud sweep off his feet
He is a godlike guitarist/singer/songwriter in my opinion.
And a damn good bluesman too.
But... It's about enjoying the music.
I totally agree. However, if one's never heard this song before, he adds a good bit of "rawness." It's nice as long as we expect it
For all you JM haters out there (i.e. people who don't get music)...if you think Buddy Guy and Double Trouble would share the stage with anyone they don't respect you are nuts. Greatest player since SRV.
original solo of buddy and unreal atmosphere amazing
Buddy Guy loves having guitarists around him and he takes influences from all of them.
Buddy Guy licks are like no other.
Thank you ivarus75, you have made my entire month, if not year. It feels like I am seeing an old friend for the first time in a long time. Thank you Thank you.
Incredible tones! Fantastic!!!!
WHO is this John Mayers guy. He is blowing me away with his talent and technique...my opinion, he's gonna end up one of the greats someday!!

Damn, fine song right there. Been some time since i heard something this good.
Thank you for laying it out. I agree with you completely. You gotta remember that Mayer also has to make a living, and his pop records are what did that for him. I think John Mayer puts lots of BG's playing into his own which is cool!
the thing about john mayer is, he went into a record studio wanting to be a solo guitar player and to be recorded. The label said they need a singer/guitar player, so here he is. I respect that he didn't give up. He made some down right chick songs. I respect his guitar playing though
buddy guy...YEAH original solo fantastic!
damn. blows my new year away now in the morning!
Hate it when people say bad things about John, don't see them playing with Buddy Guy and Double Trouble!
goosebumpssss..again..man

I survive on the the breath that you're finished with...
Orgasmic. I love love love this. I love Buddy Guy. I lovveeeeeeeee the blues. And I LOVE JOHN MAYER.

Snif, watching double trouble made me miss him... SRV
You are 100% right, that´s probably the reason why you are not up there with both of them...
It's amazing how easily it just comes to some people...I know guys that have been playin for years, but I think you gotta have something real special to play the blues the way it's supposed to be played
nice playing both

The "The Sun," advert in the top right is offending my enjoyment of this amazing video.
incredible

smooth solo
Buddy Guy ftw!
even if you don't think mayer's great yet... he's going the right way. imo he will be one of the greats.

for the win

EPIC!
what song is this man!!?,.. haven't heard from J. Mayer in awhile,.,. great song.
@crazycuntryboy2 i´m with you... Pop and blues donot go toghether. Double trouble should continue with another bluesman not with a comercial popstar.
He could sing the phone book and make it interesting and sexy.
thats not the Crash Strat...thats the Fender Custom Shop Jimi Hendrix Monterey Pop Festival Strat.
