I feel like this could be canonical if the writers decided to put a dark and sad end to the movie, Mario wanting to die to be with Luigi and either failing with Mario living in misery or actually successing and reuniting with Luigi
It makes it darker that when mario found out luigi died he immedietly tried to off himself by jumping in the lava bro, dang... 😢

If this happened, then another scenario is I think Mario would just tear into Bowser. He would probably either break the ice Crystal he was in or throw him into the lava too after beating him up.
That would be interesting if there was a sequel where Mario turns enraged & attempts to murder Bowser and anyone who gets in his way.
