  • The 2017 reboot of Prey bears little resemblance to the original 2006 game, but it's hard to complain about that when the result is this impressive.

    Arkane has said multiple times that they made this game, and *then* they were told by Bethesda to make it a Prey game. So it makes a good bit a sense for it to feel disconnected from the original Prey.

      The original internal name was Psychoshock (which ended up as the name for a power). Prey is more inspired by System Shock 2 than Bioshock though.

      This makes a great deal of sense. I haven't played it but I have watched a fair bit of analysis on it and "it's called PREY but it isn't really like Prey" is a very common start to videos.

      Just another reason to hate Bethesda. If they hadn't pulled that shit, Prey would have gotten a lot more praise.

      @@AshenVictor ...gods I wished that was the name they went with. WAY cooler of a name, and it would have solidified the connection to System Shock and Bioshock.

    I'm curious if you've ever played the system shock games? You compare Prey to Bioshock, but I'd say System Shock is a somewhat more direct comparison. If you haven't, I'd strongly recommend them!

      I don’t really think there’s much difference between bioshock and system shock. They’re both good, although I infinitely preferred system shock 2. They’re even created by the same people exploring incredibly similar themes.

    Have you considered reviewing Iconoclasts? I think there's a lot to say about the disconnect it has between it's atmophere and the story. One minute you are fighting a giant sawblade while riding a boat on rocks, the next one you witness the beginning of a civil war.
    If you do, please read the the dev's interview as it is a wonderful look into his writing process and it clears up a few plot points.

    3:23 Huh. Here Morgan uses, according to the lore, alien-derived skill though without knowing the name of the alien creature he's been attacking with that skill.

    You should do a review for System Shock 1 and/or 2. Maybe even the Thief games too.

    I don't really get the comparisons people keep making to Bioshock. Bioshock is a shooter whereas Prey is a true immersive sim like Deus Ex and Dishonored. The only thing they really share is the 'Magic' left-hand and Weapon right-hand but Dishonored does that too.
    Bioshock's RPG elements are really light and it barely supports stealth and alternative approaches. In Bioshock, the correct thing to do in a fight is always either to shoot or sometimes do the 'special thing' (like zap enemies in water or throw back grenades with telekinisis). In Prey (,Dishonored & Deus Ex) you genuinely have options in how you approach (or don't approach) each fight. There is no one way to win a fight. There are certainly better/efficient ways to take on each of Prey's enemies but they are complex and combine multiple ~weapons and powers.

      Games As Literature Thats awesome! I myself have done a personal deep dive into the game myself exploring not only its parallels with Heart of Darkness and its critique of shooters from the 2000's, but also its political commentary regarding US foreign policy in the Middle East. I really cant wait to see your take on it!

    I played the game and enjoyed most of it. What was dissapointing for me was the tons of mirrors in this game that don't reflect anything. How hard is it to make a working mirror im a small space like a bathroom?

    One of my only problems with the game is how OP the shotgun can get. I got all the upgrades for it and it could absolutely destroy anything. And ammo was incredibly cheap to make so I always had at least 50 shells. I never even had felt the need to put any of my ability points into the alien powers. (I don't remember what they were called, it's been a while since I've played the game)

    Do you review visual novels? I've recently gone down that particular rabbit hole (send help), and there are one or two good ones i might send your way. However, i won't burden you with any if you're not interested in the genre or willing to sink the time into reviewing something like that.

    • @mewhenthemewhenstheme

      Can you send some of them my way? I quite like them so a few recommendations would be nice.

    • @Grymbaldknight
      @Grymbaldknight 5 лет назад

      What genres are you into? I'll narrow my recommendations based on that.
      However, it's worth noting that i've only been playing VNs for less than a year. If you've been playing for longer, and if we like the same genres, it's not impossible that you've already played the ones i'm likely to recommend.
      However, i'm still happy to pass on my recommendations on the off-chance that i'll introduce you to something new. =)

    • @mewhenthemewhenstheme

      True, but that was only because the demand for it was so strong. As i recall, he put it on a list of games which would be "interesting" to review, and was surprised when HB was chosen. As such, i don't know whether he plays VNs voluntarily or only when the masses demand that he does.

    Really neat video. I think you should consider spoiling endings however, at least after a warning. Especially when it's out for a year :)

    • @GameProf
      @GameProf  5 лет назад

      I mean this video wouldn't really gain anything from that. It would just make it so anyone who hadn't played the game yet (of which there are plenty, I mean I just finished it recently) would have their experience lessened. If I was gonna' spoil it, it would be for an analysis of what it all means, not just a review about how good it is. And analyses are HUGE undertakings. This is not one of them. Maybe some day, but I'm too busy working on both the Spec Ops and The World Ends With You analyses.

    This game just made me want to return to Bioshock. I played on medium and there was not enough of a challenge to make me think outside the box. The guns cut through the enemies just fine throughout the whole game. My first ending was also a bad ending, which completely ruined the twist. Glad you enjoyed it, but this game is pretty average to me.

    I found this game to be disappointing and aggravating. It seemed like it was working against me at every angle. Whenever I tried to think of different ways to approach any situation the answer the game gave me was almost always "no", either because I couldn't interact with stuff around the level because I was nowhere close to unlocking the skill to use it, or because I didn't have access to enough resources, etc. Made it incredibly frustrating when I was trying to play the game on its own terms, since you're so ridiculously fragile that you have to, yet being pushed back and punished at every single level. On top of that I found the enemy design to be pretty lacking. Mimics got old quick, and everything else is just a variation of a black blob of some sort. It also lacked atmosphere too, mostly because of the audio design. It's almost completely silent the vast majority of the time, making everything feel fake and uninteresting. On the rare occasion the music comes in, it's grating and stressful, but not tense or thrilling. And while the art deco areas look nice, the labs that make up most of the game are bland and boring.

  • @CruelNoise

    Hey, quick feedback. Your background music is a bit loud. I have trouble discerning speech from background noise and there were a couple times here where that was an issue.

    Not going to spoil the ending? Dude, the game came out May 5, 2017. You're a day late and a dollar short on putting out a rudimentary review.

      This channel has three primary kinds of videos: literary analyses, which are longform analyses of a game's story, topical episodes, which are shorter and focus on one particular topic or idea, and reviews, which are... well, reviews. This is the latter. It exists to give my opinion and recommendation of a game. Spoiling the ending would be completely counter-intuitive toward that goal.
      If I wanted to go into full detail, I'd make an analysis, which is a HUGE amount of work and doesn't accomplish the same goals. The reviews on this channel are mostly of games I'm getting around to and games fans have bought for me to play and review (many of them significantly older than this one), and also exist to provide some kind of relatively easy-to-produce content while I'm working on the longer videos that people really come to the channel to see.
      If you'd like for me to be able to afford new games as soon as they come out and have time to play them quickly so I can actually review them when they're more relevant, my Patreon is in the description, but until then I'm not in a position to focus on that. So I release these reviews as I go.
