Great video! Sometimes, you don't want all the excess hardware and security issues or exploding batteries of a reused smart device. Sometimes, you just need a low-res screen for a build and this is a neat little solution. Thanks for sharing!
5 point touch instead of 10 point could be quite a restriction, especially when doing pinch to zoom functions. I don't think this display was designed to be wall mounted, though I do agree with you that a wall mount kit would be amazing. Having the LED's all around the edge really detract from it being a wall dashboard for me. I'd prefer a thinner panel without LED's. If these guys could do this same panel, but thinner and without the LED's including a wall mount option, then it may be quite close to a perfect wall panel. All that said above, as a stand alone display with some touch function, this does look like a great display and it is a decent size. I do like it for what it is.
It was designed for desk use, and that's where it shines :) I have one case that I'll show today on stream - it's a perfect match to go with it. But than, you know me, I have to try and see how something would fit in Smart Home, or get used combined with HA ;)
Is it possible to run Home Assistant on the same Raspberry PI as the one driving the screen? My brother was real excited to finally find a Pi4 and a screen, but we found out the hard way HassOS doesn't output a GUI.
Well - let me put it like this - yes, but... There is installation method called Supervised, that requires installation of Debian like OS and than running scripts to install HA. Problem is that this is intended mostly for development and people that don't need any support, as there is none. It's not recommended in any way, but works. I do have one test system with this install type.
Well, you need a PI which is extremely pricey lately and you can't use it for a videodoorbell, because the apps are usually for android and iOS :D In the end a 10,1" android tablet would be cheaper and nicer than this DIY solution :) Also it is not FHD. :\ looks more like an advertisement than a real and good solution :(
Yeah, that not as simple answer. They are targeting desktop use - for example screen for retro pi os similar. In terms of doorbell, it shouldn't be a problem (of course depending on the setup) to push image from camera there as a actionable notification. But yes, screen with new Pi combined, today, too expensive. I may end up using it as third screen on my desk for streams, for Chat for example or similar.
I think I'm missing the point. Why would you do all this instead of getting or reusing an android tablet that can do all this with less fuss and less cost?
Sometimes, it' just fun to build yourself. Also, the Android tablet may be overkill depending on application. Let's say you're like me and instead of having old Android tablets lying around, you have a ton of Raspberry Pi 1 or 2 lying around because you've been using them since they were created, or maybe an old ThinkCentre or other small form factor machine. This is a pretty neat way to repurpose those, in my opinion.
I also talked about 1 case - Home Assistant. But you can use it as Klipper frontend on 3D printer, or Octorprint controller. You can use it as external display for cameras when recording, additional screen to laptop, multimedia controller,.... Tons of possible uses IF you need additional display.
If you want to reuse an Android Tablet, that is fine, and there are plenty of tutorials on RUclips for that. This is an alternative, and a review of a 10.1" display to run with a Raspberry Pi. Besides, I yet to see an Android tablet with LED's around the edges like this display has :). There is no point as such It is a fun idea and one way to do things. :)
Not sure about you - I do use large phones (currently Pixel 7 Pro), but it is MUCH smaller than 10.1. That would be too big of a phone to put in the pocket ;) But seriously, you are right, you can use phone, tablet, you can but ePaper screen (seen my previous video), you can use Chromecast and push dahsboard and have 50-60" dashboard - it all depends on what you want, if you have already something etc. It's always good thing to have options. I would never put phone on the wall, but that's me - I would prefer going for tablet myself.
@@BeardedTinker yes I agree size does matter ^^. But the neverending pile of trash made from our old devices is where I was coming from... In that case, a 6' junker phone vs a 11' tablet can't stand the comparison because one of them is free (for all intents and purposes). There are folks out there right now that can literally build a full smarthome just from their old device drawer if they knew. It's one of those changes that can affect a lot of people overnight and would be really easy and free to implement but people don't know about it. Can also double as a security system. Thank YOU for your work!

Agree - and one other thing - it's great to have options. You can go whatever way you want.
🤩🤩Wow~Love your nice sharing! Our pleasure to be one part of your work❤❤
Thank you too
Ah this is so close to being what I need but the cable thing and lack of wall mounts is frustrating, hope they take that on board. Nice review👍
Thank you! A lot of "so close" devices lately to be honest. But maybe things are moving in right direction.

Thank you sir. 👍🏻
Very welcome Ron! THank you!
Ha. I did the same thing: notebook display in an Ikea frame 🙂
This is the way :)
IKEA is great for repurposing stuff - like what Aaron did with HA Yellow, LED strips and frame..

I sold 5 raspberry pi 4B recently once I moved to proxmox and I don't need them anymore ;-)
If you sold 5 of them, you can probably by a small house or apartment now ;)

folks can just slap their old phone on the wall and get all this functionality (sans rgb), as well as a voice assistant
