Very true Rip, well spoken. My brother and I care for our 94 year old mother. She has been in a wheel chair since 1991, after surviving a cerebral aneurysm. It is a heartbreaking task on the best days. The days that I am her legs, and mobility, those days are the engine that drive my motivation to get under the bar. On my days of caregiving I can’t wait to get back to my home and my squat rack, my bar. Between changing diapers, preparing meals, handing Mom her prescriptions and filling her water glass, I study the Videos on your website or listen to your lectures, and radio program. I sometimes wonder what the purpose of my Mothers long life of misery has accomplished. The only answer I can see is that she is a reminder of what the alternative to strength looks like in the extreme. I will turn 70 next month. I began Training in May. I bought a squat rack, a bar, some weights, and watched your video instructions. I follow as best I can, I practice, I re-watch the videos, and try to improve my technique. Thank you for all you do Anthony Cain
4 years ago, I couldn't do a single chin up (and I wasn't obese or old, just skinny and weak). Now, I can do 5 dead hang, full range of motion reps with +90lbs. We're all gonna make it, brah!
Fresh, I can do about 10 full chin ups with 90 lbs attached. At my weakest (just starting) I was able to do 5. I'm a natural at this. Progressed really quickly to around 20 in a single month. Then added weight. By the way don't dead hang with added weight. This is just plain retarded and it will dislocate your shoulders at a really heavy load eventually in the long run. Your arms should be around 175 degrees and never 180 degrees (straight). Only dead hang when you are being tested for some competition or for one rep max once it a while. Something less than 150 degrees is unacceptable but 170-175 is acceptable. 180 degrees is not worth it. The risks are just too high for the reward during mundane training session.
Quetzalcoatl you know that if you always do dead hang your ligamentos and tendons become thicker and your rotator cuff strength it by the isometric. And if you are doing deadlift and you dont dislocate your shoulder, why will be with a pull up or chin up?
It's not a ligament thing. It's about dislocation. If you do BJJ, you'll know how easy it is to dislocate an arm. Deadlift is in a completely orientation. You can't dislocate your arm in that arrangement easily. So do NOT dead hang. I've warned you. Now do whatever you want. I'm an expert at chin ups, pull ups. The first one is specially deadly. This is why you start the first one with a push with your feet and do not count it. We aren't talking bodyweight chin ups here. We are talking chin up with close to 80-100 kg added.
I'm about 88.25kg right now from dead hang. I'm around 95kg not from dead hang (2 reps first one assisted). I test from dead hang like once a month. I'm aiming to break the record. But at this high level, you get injured about once a year without performance enhancing drug. Now I know why high level athletes use steroids. 104,55 kg seems like light years considering I've plateaued. 1kg seems closer to 88kg to me than 88kg is to 100 kg. Your body seems to fall apart at such high intensity training. :)
6:45 Question about fibromyalgia. I used to have clients with rheumatoid arthritis and I always asked them, "What are you scared will happen if you train?" Inevitably the answer was "I will hurt" the follow up question was, "How do you feel when you don't train?" The answer was always, "I hurt." Concentric only movement seemed to really be a key to avoiding unnecessary soreness.
Sexual activity doesn't reduce strength training recovery...its more than than likely the other way around, that strength training increases libido in men.
10:30 Guest: "'1984', have you read that book?" Rippetoe: "Its been a long time. I'm probably not going to read it again because 'Socialism' is just not entertaining to me." Lol... This would be the equivalent of the Guest asking: "'Starting Strength', have you read that book?" And Rippetoe answering: "It's been a long time. I'm probably not going to read it again because 'picking up metal and putting it down again' is just not entertaining to me." i.e. someone who is utterly ignorant of the subject matter? A 'Surveillance State' like the US, does not have to be, 'Socialist' anymore than a 'Theocracy'? There are numerous Themes in '1984' that are useful to examine relating to the present day, or from a historical perspective, or a future outcome of our existence. Themes like: The Dangers of Totalitarianism Psychological Manipulation Physical Control Technology Language as Mind Control Infringement of Privacy and Civil Liberties This is why, to say one is not interested to read the book because one does not find 'Socialism' 'entertaining', is utter bullshit! The mind of Mark Rippetoe!!?
Why not? He's an intellectual. He keeps up-to-date with research literature on the topics he talks about. I'd trust Rip over some biased organization which would lose a ton of credibility if they constantly changed their statements to fit the newest research findings.
Ralph Schraven cardiovascular disease is our #1 killer. Our high fat high sugar western diet is the reason. Dr Williams who is the former head of the American cardiology association concluded that saturated fat is exactly the problem and went plant based. It works every time. Saturated fat does lead to heart disease unless you have super genes.
The problem if you cant squat with a dumbell with heavy load because arms are less strong that legs. If you cant squat heavy you progress slowly in strengh training
Older folks can get a lot of benefit from bodyweight training. Rip is being really closed minded. Barbell training is not the only form of resistance training!!!
I started my dad off by getting on the floor and getting back up again. His motivation was he was afraid of falling and not able to get up. In the beginning, he was like a flipped turtle. He eventual could do 10 reps. It was highly functional too. Start where they are at. He was 82. Sadly, in his earlier life he had zero interest in exercise. He retired and believed he'd earned the right to be 'comfortable' at all times.
Well the Chinese are pretty good weightlifters... i don't believe the icing of the balls but i do believe semen retention. Mike Tyson practiced the same in his prime

I owe rip for getting my training in order. I wasted 5 years before I came across his work. Every beginner needs to start with his program to succeed.

"Do the most good that you can..." best last words... (y)
Does the type of icing matter? Would Duncan Hines work better than homemade?
It only depends if they're willing to put the lime in the coconut and drink em both together..on Wednesdays..
So I shouldn't use Duncan Hines then?
Sexual activity doesn't reduce strength training recovery...its more than than likely the other way around, that strength training increases libido in men.
Being around fit women in tight leggings at the gym gets my libido up.
RIPPETOE IS A TRUE AMERICAN WOO
Inverted rows and slow negative eccentrics works well for pullups.

Long live Mark Rippetoe.

That shirt is a cool way to trigger assholes in California... :)
@15:07 - it's got to be Pecan Lodge in Dallas. The BBQ is legit.
2:17 OH MY GOD! Mark's face is priceless! hahahahahaha
That second question is one I think of daily……. I would’ve asked the same thing hahah

70+ years old don't absolutely have to get to a barbell. Anyone can carry a kettlebell or dumbbell in their car (for their clients).
Elastic bands. Or TRX straps can do a lot ...
The problem if you cant squat with a dumbell with heavy load because arms are less strong that legs. If you cant squat heavy you progress slowly in strengh training
Rip seems to be enjoying this Wal-Mark chair a bit too much.
Sugar
If anything, ejaculation would help with recovery because it helps you relax and unwind.
because it feels fucking good
much easier than relax and unwind

He’s not saying it’s the only way he’s saying it’s the best way. Pay attention lol.
Just kidding by the way.
