In the end OJ’s inability to handle rejection was his downfall and resulted in the deaths of two young people. It’s not complicated. There is a great deal of footage of the Watts riots, of course Rodney King beating and the exoneration of the cops that tortured him, and old footage from the 1950s and 60s of blacks being discriminated against. This is all intersperced with extensive film of all of O J's life, especially USC and the Bills, and then his multiple business ventures, and Hertz. There is great narratives with people close to him, and none of them hold back, be it good or bad. The trial of course is covered, not a much as Court TV did, but other parts of the investigation and scenes from the houses, and lots of Mark Furhman. It is well worth watching--you can stop and pick it up again at any time--and buying. Let me know if you ever see it. Thanks Best, Anne

He stated that there was only one person in all that time who defended Nicole...and it was Ronald Goldman...and he lost his life in doing so! That hit me hard! I worked near downtown LA during the OJ trial and I’ll never forget the sea of giant satellite dishes lining the streets around the courthouse. The OJ souvenirs sold on every corner, what a spectacle.
Not only were there satellite dishes there were multiple police officers on the street including one on a motorcycle who tapped me on the shoulder as I was entering a high rise building and declared he was writing me up for an $80.00 “jaywalking” ticket even though the nearest cross walk was a 100 yards away. Was I guilty, “yes” Was OJ guilty…?! (

OJ got off bcuz of Rodney King, Rodney was the George Floyd of his day for anyone younger. One of the ladies from the jury admitted this in a documentary & said she wasn't alone in voting for an acquittal bcuz of the Rodney King incident with the LA cops. She also said that she felt bad about it later
That is not the whole story. The cops and investigators handled the crime scene terribly. There were several technicalities the prosecution screwed up. It was a clown show handled by a kangaroo court. He was clearly guilty. And he was clearly not going to be prosecuted fully for... but, the fact that his image was irreparable was as damning to him as any jail time.

Im not hearing anyone mention the amounts of cocaine hed been using for years prior. It was talked about openly back then and played a large role in his rage issues. If you already have anger management problems, adding excessive cocaine use just increases those issues to the 10th power.

According to Marcia Clark's book, the jury pool in downtown L.A. was so bad that those were the best jurors they could end up with. Had the trial taken place in Brentwood, like some people said it should've, they probably would've had a much better jury pool.

I am the same age as OJ. I loved watching him at USC then on to the NFL. His personality during all those years was off the charts great. But all in that changed in 1994. At first I hoped he was innocent. But it became obvious he wasn't. What a shame for everyone.

A couple points to consider, Dan - 1) it wasn't love he had for Nicole, or anything close to it. It was narcissism - which is a personality disorder and 2) there is ZERO evidence anyone else was involved, and it makes it appear that you are somehow - to however small an extend - attempting to mitigate what OJ did, as if it wasn't just him that's guilty....
I was surprised too, when I heard OJ died of cancer. I had no idea he was battling cancer. When I first heard he died I honestly thought so he might’ve killed him or an accident.

There’s multiple factors why he wasn’t declared guilty but probably the main reason was his race. Now, barely anyone affiliates him with football anymore. People are hung up and mad because this was the first (and only) time white people got to feel the pain black people have felt for decades regarding our Judicial system.

Just to name a couple of their many faults, they failed to bring up several pieces of strong evidence, they overall failed to control the situation, and they failed by making the jury mostly African American during a time of racial tensions) but the timing of the crime and race is definitely one of them. You have to understand the “race situation” that was going on at the time. In the early-90’s there was a lot of race-related issues going on; two years prior to the case Rodney King was beaten by the police and large riots led to over one billion dollars in damage. This tension would not end so soon. When the OJ case came out, it became about race rather than what actually happened. Many polls showed that black people were aligning with OJ and white people weren’t. Despite the enormous amount of physical evidence proving he was responsible, he was said to be “not guilty”. Rodney King’s arrest certainly played a part in many people, including the jury, who was mostly composed of African Americans. They by multiple reports and statements from them today, wanted “payback” for the Rodney King incident. One of the most messed up parts is if they did convict him, such riots could’ve happened again. The defense was basically "let's point out racism and guilt shame them into saying he's innocent". So that’s also one of the things that make people angry about the case. Despite the colossal amount of evidence that supported his guiltiness, he dodged punishment because of his race. No argument! But at the end of the day he still killed two people and got away with it. No matter what race you are that’s just fucked up. This clown deserves no respect, and deserves no place on earth. Good riddance he’s gone.

Dan, I feel similarly about OJ, as my earliest memories were OJ as Nordberg; HILARIOUS. The Naked Gun are the funniest movies of that era by a country mile. Leslie Nielsen was the GOAT 🐐 at his style of comedy 🎭. I also remember OJ as the Hertz guy. And I am the biggest Knicks fan, so I remember OJ so vividly and honestly I am saddened by his passing. In particular, R&R a publication that tracked song popularity. It was a mainstay in the radio world. This was, obviously, pre internet. Movie Tunes was another of his ventures, that was a success. In some circles, he was well known and successful. Given my families history of working in, and around, that industry- I was privy to that info. And, to be fair, I didn't know he had practiced law until the trial. Kris was "Bruce Jenner's" wife in some social and entertainment publications. They were married before the trial. I am sure you know plenty about Jenner, given your research... advice. Both, Robert and Kris, were successful, published, and had money before the trial. Hence my statement. Were they world famous? No. And by all accounts became MUCH more exposed, leading to future ventures that led to even more exposure and "opportunity," as it were. More so for Kris and the family name, than Robert.

Enjoyed listening to this but I think Patrick has overstated the trial's impact on television programming. While it may have accelerated the development of reality TV productions, it was not the first reality TV. MTV's The Real World predated it by two-and-a-half years, and that show was inspired by some show from the 1970s.

I have always loved Dan, but I thought maybe he misspoke on the whole "OJ didn't act alone thing," but maybe he didn't? That is such a tin-foil-on-the-head thing. There is zero evidence of anyone else but the victims and OJ at that crime scene. If there is a "Charlie," it is just OJ's fleeing conscience. The evidence suggests that Ron And Nicole were ambushed from out of the dark and quickly suffered strikes to the head - potentially simultaneously, disabling them from meaningfully fighting back. OJ then killed them viciously - very viciously. There were signs that he tortured Nicole with small cuts to her neck as he talked to her before he cut her neck so outrageously and thoroughly that he nicked her spine from a violent front cut and almost decapitated her. Against this reality, not only is it offensive to suggest that someone else did this or had a part in it without any evidence pointing at that, but in my view (even as an SC Alumn) it is inappropriate to eulogize OJ's football career with a sense of wonderment and nostalgia, and talk up how receiving he was to fans. He killed these two people, after beating and terrorizing Nicole for years. He bragged about the murders (oh, yeah, hypothetically), and said that the victims deserved it (even if he did it). He taunted poor Ron Goldman's family, and refused to pay the damages awarded against him. He laughed about the murders - publicly. He went on to abuse a subsequent girlfriend. He never repented, and he never said he was sorry to anybody. He went on to commit an armed robbery, even if it was his stuff he was trying to steal back (legally irrelevant). Even during that Bronco chase, the only reason OJ wanted to talk to Costas was that he though Costas could help OJ restore or protect what was left of his favorable public image (that whole thing was an OJ attention grab - he was never genuinely remorseful or suicidal, or he would have just done it. It was OJ theater. He was evil and only cared about himself. That's the eulogy OJ deserves. Nothing more.

One of the ladies from the jury admitted this in a documentary & said she wasn't alone in voting for an acquittal bcuz of the Rodney King incident with the LA cops. That is not the whole story. The cops and investigators handled the crime scene terribly. There were several technicalities the prosecution screwed up. It was a clown show handled by a kangaroo court.
He was clearly guilty. And he was clearly not going to be prosecuted fully for... but, the fact that his image was irreparable was as damning to him as any jail time.

The problem was the Rodney King beating incident with the LA cops, that caused multiple jurors to acquit bcuz they felt it was justice somehow. One woman who admitted that was her reasoning said she felt bad later about letting OJ off
According to Marcia Clark's book, the jury pool in downtown L.A. was so bad that those were the best jurors they could end up with. Had the trial taken place in Brentwood, like some people said it should've, they probably would've had a much better jury pool.

I am the same age as OJ. I loved watching him at USC then on to the NFL. His personality during all those years was off the charts great. But all in that changed in 1994. At first I hoped he was innocent. But it became obvious he wasn't. What a shame for everyone.

@@philalexander7902 and that’s exactly why the case is so controversial. The *massive* amount of evidence points to him but he didn’t get convicted. There’s multiple factors why he wasn’t declared guilty but probably the main reason was his race. Now, barely anyone affiliates him with football anymore. He’s much more affiliated with what he’s done off the field than on the field.
@@philalexander7902 and just in general “not guilty” does not mean “innocent”. Many people who are guilty aren’t convicted and many people who aren’t guilty are convicted. OJ was the former; he was guilty but not convicted.

People are hung up and mad because this was the first (and only) time white people got to feel the pain black people have felt for decades regarding our Judicial system.
@@philalexander7902 lots of factors play a part in the final outcome (such as the TERRIBLE prosecution. Just to name a couple of their many faults, they failed to bring up several pieces of strong evidence, they overall failed to control the situation, and they failed by making the jury mostly African American during a time of racial tensions) but the timing of the crime and race is definitely one of them.
You have to understand the “race situation” that was going on at the time. In the early-90’s there was a lot of race-related issues going on; two years prior to the case Rodney King was beaten by the police and large riots led to over one billion dollars in damage. This tension would not end so soon. When the OJ case came out, it became about race rather than what actually happened. Many polls showed that black people were aligning with OJ and white people weren’t. Despite the enormous amount of physical evidence proving he was responsible, he was said to be “not guilty”. Rodney King’s arrest certainly played a part in many people, including the jury, who was mostly composed of African Americans. They by multiple reports and statements from them today, wanted “payback” for the Rodney King incident. One of the most messed up parts is if they did convict him, such riots could’ve happened again. The defense was basically "let's point out racism and guilt shame them into saying he's innocent".
So that’s also one of the things that make people angry about the case. Despite the colossal amount of evidence that supported his guiltiness, he dodged punishment because of his race. No argument!
But at the end of the day he still killed two people and got away with it. No matter what race you are that’s just fucked up. This clown deserves no respect, and deserves no place on earth. Good riddance he’s gone.

Dan, I feel similarly about OJ, as my earliest memories were OJ as Nordberg; HILARIOUS. The Naked Gun are the funniest movies of that era by a country mile. Leslie Nielsen was the GOAT 🐐 at his style of comedy 🎭. I also remember OJ as the Hertz guy. And I am the biggest Knicks fan, so I remember OJ so vividly and honestly I am saddened by his passing. Bottom line he was acquitted, and there are holes in the case like it or not, so OJ is a complex figure of ultimate duality. Robert dated Priscilla Presley, the widow of Elvis Presley, at one time. And he was the founder of a couple of businesses that were well-known in music circles. In particular, R&R a publication that tracked song popularity. It was a mainstay in the radio world. This was, obviously, pre internet. Movie Tunes was another of his ventures, that was a success. In some circles, he was well known and successful. Given my families history of working in, and around, that industry- I was privy to that info. And, to be fair, I didn't know he had practiced law until the trial.
Kris was "Bruce Jenner's" wife in some social and entertainment publications. They were married before the trial. I am sure you know plenty about Jenner, given your research... advice.
Both, Robert and Kris, were successful, published, and had money before the trial. Hence my statement. Were they world famous? No. And by all accounts became MUCH more exposed, leading to future ventures that led to even more exposure and "opportunity," as it were. More so for Kris and the family name, than Robert.

My fault for assuming one would be speaking to the fortunes and notoriety of those involved with the trial, or with those involved in said trial. Given the context of the subject has to do with that trial. When people state the "Kardashians" fame started with that trial, I believe it is meant to be taken as the start of what would come later down the road. Not literally, all of the Kardashian became famous because of the OJ Simpson trial.

Enjoyed listening to this but I think Patrick has overstated the trial's impact on television programming. While it may have accelerated the development of reality TV productions, it was not the first reality TV. MTV's The Real World predated it by two-and-a-half years, and that show was inspired by some show from the 1970s.

I have always loved Dan, but I thought maybe he misspoke on the whole "OJ didn't act alone thing," but maybe he didn't? That is such a tin-foil-on-the-head thing. There is zero evidence of anyone else but the victims and OJ at that crime scene. If there is a "Charlie," it is just OJ's fleeing conscience. The evidence suggests that Ron And Nicole were ambushed from out of the dark and quickly suffered strikes to the head - potentially simultaneously, disabling them from meaningfully fighting back. OJ then killed them viciously - very viciously. There were signs that he tortured Nicole with small cuts to her neck as he talked to her before he cut her neck so outrageously and thoroughly that he nicked her spine from a violent front cut and almost decapitated her. Against this reality, not only is it offensive to suggest that someone else did this or had a part in it without any evidence pointing at that, but in my view (even as an SC Alumn) it is inappropriate to eulogize OJ's football career with a sense of wonderment and nostalgia, and talk up how receiving he was to fans. He killed these two people, after beating and terrorizing Nicole for years. He bragged about the murders (oh, yeah, hypothetically), and said that the victims deserved it (even if he did it). He taunted poor Ron Goldman's family, and refused to pay the damages awarded against him. He laughed about the murders - publicly. He went on to abuse a subsequent girlfriend. He never repented, and he never said he was sorry to anybody. He went on to commit an armed robbery, even if it was his stuff he was trying to steal back (legally irrelevant). Even during that Bronco chase, the only reason OJ wanted to talk to Costas was that he though Costas could help OJ restore or protect what was left of his favorable public image (that whole thing was an OJ attention grab - he was never genuinely remorseful or suicidal, or he would have just done it. It was OJ theater. He was evil and only cared about himself. That's the eulogy OJ deserves. Nothing more.
