Thanks! I've always wondered what to do with fleeting notes ever since using the Zettelkasten method, so your video is really helpful!

    Wonderful!
I'm new to the zettlekasten method and have had a lot of sources suggest getting rid of fleeting notes once they've been processed. That has irked me for quite a while. I find your reasoning a lot more sensible, great advice!

Especially if stored and created electronically, with the price of storage these days, keeping them has far more potential value than even the cost of time (time is money and other potential opportunities) to worry about deciding whether to delete them or not, and when you do the math, let’s say it uses 1 KB for a fleeting note: even the 5.25’ Apple 2 series floppy format could store around 140 of them, and a disk cost a dollar. A penny for your thought, even then. If your effective hourly wage is $36.00 then you’d need to spend less than a second thinking about each one and whether to keep it to not have the storage cost be far less than the decision cost. That’s not even accounting for the loss of an audit trail each literature and final note has been broken.

Great Video Martin, with time, trying and fail, my workflow is a synergy with MS Onenote and Obsidian , I prefere capture and take raw information in OneNote, then a "clean and revise" and retain only the valuable information...and I transfer to my Obsidian Fleeting note folder and process my literrature and permanent note.
    Thanks !

Ha, I was thinking exactly about this! I decided to keep them for the reasons you also gave. It's kind of a snapshot of my "beginner's mind" when tackling a new subject. After a while it's refreshing to get back to my initial thoughts on something and understand my first impression and how my understanding deepened over time.
I decided to keep them kind of 'out of sight' though, I don't like them cluttering my references, so I have a Register file just for them, where I index them all and for the more permanent notes I just make a link to this register file. This way I don't have to make too many reference links to these very messy files, as they can clutter the file needlessly and are kind of distracting. And I tag them as #raw too, to be able to filter them if I ever need it.

That’s great and thank you for sharing your workflow around it. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in how I think about these things!

Beautiful! Are you still working on flowtelic by any chance?

I certainly am. I’m rebuilding it from the ground up as a desktop app first (with a web app and mobile app coming after).
It’s got a whole new editor experience, but the real magic will be in the workflows you get.
It’s quite the undertaking, but I’m adamant that the world doesn’t need just another note taking app, but something special that takes it to the next level. I’ve not yet seen my approach done by other apps yet, so hopefully what I’m creating is better.
It’s hard work but slowly taking shape as I work on it.

@ I’m really proud of you keep up the good work. I’ve used flowtelic a little and love the approach with the workflows and really think when you finish it, it will be a dream for us writers and authors who could use less time and cognition with what to write and just get into the “flow” of writing.
Haven’t used the app since my son was born some years ago but I still come over and peak now and then to see wassup.
Congratulations again on your book too!

@@ServantStatusMinistries Thanks :) - if you do come back to the beta, you might get a browser certificate error - it's expired and I do plan to retire these. I really want to keep my head down on the new desktop app version. Thrilled to year that you're excited to see how it turns out :)

@@Martin_Adams oh I doubt it’s just me that’s excited but I know better things take time. I would rather you have the kinks out than to release it prematurely….i don’t have it in me anymore to be another beta or alpha tester of a notes app 😭😒😑

Ahrens' book, from what I understood, argues that fleeting notes should be discarded as they are typically so brief (Luhmann often just used a single word) that one would not be able to reproduce knowledge from them. They are meant to function as reminders of knowledge/an idea rather than the knowledge/idea itself. In this context he also argues that fleeting notes typically fade within a day or two (and if not transferred within that time will be hard to remember anyway). Just wanted to throw that into the discussion...

Quick question, do you Archive those fleeting notes in a separate folder?

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams  2 года назад

Yeah, that’s what I would do. In the app I’m building there is state associated wit the notes, so you would mark them a complete. Another thing you can do is use hash tags like #status/done and then use tag views (in Obsidian, Bear App, etc) to filter things by status. So you can have #status/todo #status/doing #status/done.

Your videos would be much better and easier to understand if you show examples as you are explaining the various concepts.

I agree, other videos on my channel do have examples but they are much more in-depth. I appreciate the feedback and will look to do this in future videos.
