  • Pasco County Utilities customers often ask us, "Why are you wasting all that water?" Short answer: We're not!
You might have noticed fire hydrant or water valve flushing throughout Pasco County. In this short video, Water Quality Supervisor Kevin Jenkins explains the process of water flushing and how it keeps your drinking water safe.
The process rids water of the following:
    - Impurities
    - Sediment
    - Biologic Growth
Water flushing is an important part of the process to keep your water clean. Each year, Jenkins and his team check over 122,000 connections to make sure Pasco County's water is of the highest quality.

Our water stinks. We have 778 homes and most complain about the water smelling. Most have softeners and some whole house filters. 3 water companies and the county tech told me our water has very low or undetectable levels of chlorine. Our hydrant has been flushed twice in neat 3 years. I know people in Odessa and need the water west of 19 and their water doesn't smell. Why is ours worse. It's all Pasco county.

This does not talk about where that water is going and how many gallons they are flushing into the sewer. As far as I know we do not have in Pasco any means to take that sewer water and clean it up. 37 years on my block Pasco & I've never seen this done in my neighborhood. Pick up the newspaper and it says Pasco county's at a critical drought asking homeowners to conserve water and yet this video doesn't explain where that water is going and are we recycling it. I didn't look at this video to find out about flushing I looked at this video to find out what's going on with the thousands of gallons of water that just went down the sewer. Can somebody explain that to me from the county? I read that Pasco gives their water to Pinellas and yet the commissioners ask the homeowners to conserve water. I think we need more education as to where this water is going that's going into the sewer system doesn't make sense I wouldn't mind if we had a reclaimed water plant now that would make sense thank you.

Our community has JUST had this done last week. One thought that we all had is WHY no notice? It would have been nice to advise the homeowners so they knew ahead of time. In addition, our sewer water goes into our retention ponds. They did this at the absolutely wrong time. We have a hurricane coming and now our ponds are full. We just this past weekend found our outlet is blocked by tree/stump debris and now the water has nowhere to go. Not their fault but we have a huge problem days before a hurricane is upon us. Yes, we will work diligently to hopefully correct the issue; but a heads up nonetheless would have been nice.

@@YoMamaG what do you need to know about? it shouldn't impact you, at all. Wow, some water in the street. Move on. By flushing the hydrants they are keeping the water system clean, thats cleaner drinking water. what is bad about that? in the process they also ensure that the fire hydrant works, the outlet caps aren't rusted on and so forth. This keeps the hydrant ready for the fire dept use.
Water is not being flushed from the earth, it still exist. it's just going to go into the storm water system, which often times leads to rivers, lakes, oceans. it will go back into the environment and be used again one day.
