Jimin said in his tweet that this song is about him and army. It’s taking about him learning to love and army learning to love themselves, in short explanation.
I saw that tweet, it brought tears to my eyes.
Nah, Jimin never said he wrote the song for army. Jimin said he wrote the song for himself - he was ONLY SHARING with the fans.
This means that it could be about his love for someone. Dezz is right, the wording show that it is about romantic love. Immature armies are jealous that he already likes someone. They think they can control BTS' lives by forcing public opinion. But they cannot. I pray Jimin will be brave to live his own life and refuse to give into delusional girls who care nothing about his welfare . They only want their own fantasies fulfilled. This is an sick aspect of K-pop. Companies mass produce stars into fantasy figures to draw fans into fantasy about them and get addicted to every aspect of their lives, and then fans in turn try to barge into their privacy and take all their time. So really both the companies and the stars have responsibilities for this outcome. They cage the fans and the fans attempt to cage them. It's really pretty sick. I hope by being more international, BTS can break out of the unhealthy K-pop system.

I agree jimins melodies are amazing and beautiful. The lyrics are what got me with this song because the melody is so beautiful yet the words are almost heartbreaking. The fact he says “you’re hurting too, cause you’re mine”, as if he’s blaming himself for hurting someone, he then goes one with “I want You to be Your light” and “so that you won’t be hurting anymore, so that you could smile more”. I absolutely love this song and can relate with it so well. I love your reaction!!
I agree as well. The song is about love for another person. Good writers can write songs that are simultaneously true about someone and themselves. But no one says "I want to blow your mind" to themselves. Because they only have one mind.
Also, people keep spreading these lies that Jimin has some sort of abnormal insecurities - this is all false information and misunderstanding of the artist personality type. So fans keep making false buzz making Jimin sound like he's crazy or something.
This is obviously not the case. People who are extraordinarily gifted are all naturally perfectionists in the sight of average people, because they have the vision and abilities to do more. Hence they want more and demand more. This is true of most of my artist and designer friends. None of them have low-self esteem. But like Jimin they have high standards. I am such a person as well. I completely understand Jimin and don't know why people keep painting him in the wrong light. By telling to not have high standards is to tell him his true aspirations and desires are wrong compared to the average joe's. This is wrong. In my assessment, Jimin is a stronger and more stable person than most people. You can see it in his genuine joy and calmness.
Jimin tweeted that this is a song for himself and for ARMYS and it’s pretty much saying that no matter what you are going through and no matter how sad or hurt or lonely you may feel promise that you’ll never abandon yourself or throw yourself away. Be your own light, be your own happiness, love yourself, and know that no matter what you are going through everything will be ok. We all know how hard Jimin is on himself so I think it’s so nice that he wrote a song making a promise to himself and to remind himself of that while at the same time reminding ARMYS who are going through the same thing of that and encouraging ARMYS to make the same promise to themselves. It’s so beautiful!
WRONG. He never said it was for army. He wrote it for himself and was sharing it with army only. Well, since he's releasing, it is an automatic share. Stop trying to possess Jimin. He owes you nothing and should date a girl he likes. He will never date you. Please accept reality and stop being crazy.

Unfortunately, most people can only rely on translations from Koreans, and indeed he said many times this song were for those who listen to it who need comfort in being more happy with themselves. Gorgeous Man Jimin ok whoa what the heck are you talking about? That’s not what I was saying at all. Yes I know full well that he wrote this song for himself. BUT he has also said (multiple times in fact) that it was also for other people who are also having a hard time and that he hoped it could be comforting to people who are going through a hard time. What I meant when I said that it was also for ARMYS was that, just as he was making a promise to himself, he was also reminding us to make a promise to ourselves to always love ourselves and never abandon ourselves etc. I never once said a single word about anybody dating anybody or any of the other things you were talking about so I genuinely have no idea whatsoever where all this “you don’t possess him”, “he doesn’t owe you anything”, “you’ll never date him” crap is coming from. Trust me I know all of this. I know that ARMYS don’t possess any of the members. I know full well and strongly believe that the members don’t owe ARMYS or anybody else anything. I know they should date whoever they want. Dating wasn’t even so much as a passing thought in my head. But again I never once so much as mentioned any of these things. Regarding the meaning of the song I was simply saying what Jimin himself had said about what the song means. You need to calm down and not jump to conclusions. i believe that's how jimin became his bias wrecker. he said in one of his videos that he was looking up live performances of BTS (when he first started reacting to them) and he came across the performance of Let Me Know and he loved it. It's in his video of doing an unboxing for Korea Box.

i know this is an old video but i've noticed that the members tend to say that songs that sound like love songs are talking to themselves/army but i think that's the only way they can sing love songs without a backlash from fans AND haters. some of the lyrics in promise/serendipity/my time ect. are pretty hard to explain as being JUST about themself/army. i mean ultimately it's none of our business as to their personal lives, but i think it's a bit sad if they are expressing romantic love in through art that they have to be secretive about in any way. although thats also pretty romantic now that i mention it lol. i just think the intersection between artistic expression/maintaining image for idols, especially bts, is so fascinating and poignant.

This song is about mental health! Jimin's upbeat cheerful self is talking to the dark side of himself that tends to show up time to time telling him negative things about himself! He says to himself I want to be your light and realizes that he can be his own light when the negative dark thoughts start to invade his basic upbeat thought pattern! He wonders why and how his thoughts have become so negative and hurtful towards himself at times and begins to fight back with the deeper part of himself that realizes he can overcome his insecurities by not being so hard on himself and understanding his worth as a human being! Jimin makes a promise to himself and asks every one listening to "Promise" who feels alone sometimes and battles overwhelming insecurity to promise themselves and him that they will not be so hard on themselves or lose faith in themselves and everything will be okay! He is reminding himself and all of us to not be so harsh on ourselves and to not overthink because we are slipping away on our own thoughts and it might bring us to something that might make us you know just give up and take our own lives. He is saying that we should all promise to ourselves to be our own light because no one else would light our path and to not throw ourselves even though we feel sad and hurting and all alone in this world and ofcourse to never give up. The song is like refreshing your soul. He started making this song in April and Namjoon helped him write this song. He worked very hard on it despite their busy schedule.

I've looked at a ton of lyric translations and this lyric video is slightly off, I highly suggest checking out the lyric breakdown and analysis from @andthh2 on twitter ( twitter.com/andthh2 ) It does a good job of explaining the song and fixing errors that were in this video. But this song is for himself first, he himself stated it on twitter and it can most definitely be a direct transition from Lie which talked of his struggles and torment. It should be noted that he tends to refer to himself at you or me. So when he is saying things like "you're hurt because your mine" it can heavily be inferred that he is saying I am hurt because this is a part of me.
The part at the beginning where it says "since when did I give pain to you"is actually supposed to be "Since when did you start hurting me, even you don't know" this is an incredibly important mistranslation. The incorrect translation makes it sounds like he is referring to another separate individual when in fact he is referring to himself. As in when did I become so self-critical, so hateful towards myself. It is most definitely a song about himself. His persona, his true self, his struggles and his love for his fans. It is a beautiful, bittersweet song that ends on a positive note of self-love and not giving up.
