MGB-GT at Silverstone - MGs on Track

- Most of the F1 drivers use simulators to improve their driving so, before tackling to the real track with MGs on Track, we’ve taken a leaf out of their book and got ourselves a copy of a popular simulator, Assetto Corsa.
The F1 simulators clearly cost many thousands of pounds and we clearly can’t afford one of those, so we’ve hit Facebook marketplace and bought almost everything we need for a few hundred pounds.
The simulator includes the full Silverstone GP circuit and we’ve managed to download an MGB-GT as well, so this is the closest thing we could get to the real thing in an attempt to answer the question - how realistic is a simulator?

Wow, great simulator. This is how you save on gasoline/petrol and you don't worry about blowing your engine.
Great video
Thanks for your comment - Yes, and its great fun too!
Excellent interesting video. Great job Graham!
Thanks John! I guess you've read the Wessex MGOC newsletter :-)
Best video yet! 👍👍
Thanks so much for your comments - strangely the track videos don't usually do very well but this one seems to have bucked the trend :-)
I found this video because I am rather an Assetto Corsa specialist than a MG-B specialist and I loved to watch this from a completely different perspective of a real world driver. Very nice - enjoyed it.
If you are looking for a casual and friendly Assetto racing community (very much in 'our'' age bracket) then let me know. 😉
Many thanks for your comment - I do love Assetto Corsa and have never tried an online community but would love to have a go at it - send me details at hello@classicmgb.com and I'll join up!
Interesting study. Just out of curiousity, how much quicker do you think you would be without the blow by blow narrative? Not that I didn't enjoy the commentary but it might add to your concentration level.
Thanks for your comment - probably not a lot quicker in reality - maybe 5-10 seconds at most which in F1 terms is a huge difference (!) but on a 4 minute odd lap time, not a massive amount!
that looks like great game and good simulator. How's the "feedback" from your simulator setup? Does it feel somewhat real? Cheers
Thanks for your comment - I have a Logitech G920 wheel which is at the budget end of the market but it still gives reasonable feedback - of course a Direct Drive wheel would improve this but they're expensive! There is a certain realism about it, but the bit that a simple status simulator can't replicate are the G-forces in the real car. That said, I reckon its a useful tool nevertheless...
Great video, many thanks. Is there also a MG F or MG TF (mid engined)?
Thanks for your comment - I did find this one on a download site. Can't verify how good it is! www.overtake.gg/downloads/mg-mgf-1-8i-vvc-throphy.63180/
@@ClassicMGB Great service, had a look at the link awesome! Thank you so much.
Looks great fun, I thought both the sim & real life were good laps like you say you can thrash the sim MG.
Thanks for your comment - absolutely, you can thrash the sim to death and just hit the reset button when you meet the barriers! Sadly, not the same in a real one :-)
Tons of fun there, both sim and real.
What was the top speed of your real car on the track? Do you have overdrive? If so did you use overdrive on the track?
Thanks for your comment. The top speed at the end of the hangar straight was just short of 90mph according to the GPS - actually very similar to the sim. The speedo on the top left of the live picture shows the GPS speed. Regarding the overdrive, mine has one, but I didn't use it on the track as I din;t want to have to switch it out and change gear at Stowe - too much for my brain to cope with at once!
Лучшие краш-кары, способные выдержать удары, - это место, которое можно оценить по достоинству.
Sadly I don't understand Russian and Google translate didn't help much but thanks for your comment anyway!
Nicw work. I didn't realise how much of a micky mouse curcuit Silverstone had become. Love it in the 70s. Woodcote was awsome then.
Thanks for your comment - yes, you don't realise how tight it is watching the F1 onboards - quite incredible how fast they go around the tight corners. In truth, I think I preferred the circuit before the loop with the old bridge corner... I guess that's progress though. For the MGB-GT, I definitely prefer Castle Combe and we're planning a visit there in June!
@@ClassicMGB I'll look out for that. I'm just finishing of my 1970 BGT, but I don't think I'll track day it. The rear axel is, how shall I say, a little fragile and I'm not about to pull it out.
Another brilliant video Graham. Always love your videos and this one left me with a big grin as you clearly had such a good time both on the sim and at Silverstone. Luffield sure was slippery, even during the last session of the day when the track was largely dry, so definitely needed tippy toes!
Thanks Nigel. It would interesting to get you on the sim in an MG-TF and compare that with the real track day - you'll be miles quicker than I was! :-)
@@ClassicMGB That would be fun, not sure about being much quicker though!
Frame rates looks very low. Not sure if its just the uploaded video or low when you were playing as well but increasing that would help you a lot
Thanks for the comment and good spot! Yes, the video framerate is very low for gameplay (25fps) as it was recorded on an ATEM video switcher. When I use the sim without recording, I get around 200fps so its much smoother!
@@ClassicMGBAh perfect then. I love AC - race min a couple hours a week. I might have to try an MGB :)
Ha - you'll find it very slow but quite challenging as it spins really quickly! Make sure you have no traction control or anti-lock brakes :-)
@@ClassicMGB My two favorite cars are pretty slow but I suspect this will be decidedly slower. I really like the stock ND Mazda MX5 and also the Abarth 500 (not the old stuff but the new). But both those cars are 160HP I think.
Lots of fun, well done !!
Race you for Pink Slips !!!! (car title)
Thanks for your comment Jeff - As yo';ve watched the video, I guess you'd be onto a good thing in the race... strangely, I remember what pink slips are from the Grease film! :-)
