It’s a dead heat. Two bands I had the pleasure of growing up with. I have unconditional love for my beloved Fulham FC, these bands are basically the same.

Thanks, Shawn and Trey, (and Fran) for this excellent reaction! One of the best battles from this channel! Love both songs. it's really unbelievable that they are non-album songs. Always loved Rubber Ring (one of the first Smiths songs that I've ever heard, since I bought this single long time ago). But I think Fretless is slightly better, just because, for me, it's one of REM mastepieces. I easily put this in my top ten list of REM songs. Everything is perfect about it, from the instrumentation to Kate Pierson's backing vocals. These two songs deserve much more recognition.

'Rubber Ring' within the UK, as MORRISSEY obviously openly refferances is actually a nick name for CONDOMS. Hence his personal fascination with open Sexuality and conflict. But obviously a popular response to the LIFE SAVER product. . As always Morrissey mixes a thousand different Metaphors. And in connection with REM, Morrissey is or was incredibly close Michael in the 90s Lovers or not. . But all beautiful music.

Shawn and Trey, This is a song battle between t two heavy hitters. First song has fire and melody and a solid rocking sound in the guitars and drums. The lyrics are interesting and has meaning. I agree, B sides are often quality songs. Your comments are on point. Second song has that call and response like you said. A well written song with really good atmospheric music with nice guitar and good lyrics. Good comments by you guys. Solid song. You are right, both songs could win. I like the first song , the second song sounds more unique in the musical and lyrical imagery. It's a split decision. My choice is the second song as the winner. A very tough choice for this song battle Fran.

As a big fan of both bands I've never heard the REM song. Hard to choose between the bands for me though think they are both great. The Smiths more consistent I guess but then they only lasted 4 or 5 years vs about 30 years for REM

I've been listening to Rubber Ring for decades (didn't know that was the song's title 😳). I'm biased towards The Smiths for sentimental reasons. Glad I'm not the one calling this challenge 😝.

I'm always surprised that non-album b-sides weren't much of a thing in the States, they're a great way to get people to buy a song twice (i.e. album and single), you'd have thought that was a no-brainer for US record execs, but guess we should be thankful for small mercies! Anyway, like both of these but REM are the winners for me (damn, agreeing with Shawn AGAIN!!) - pity it didn't make it on to Out of Time, there's a few tracks on there I'd happily swap it out for!
Well once again fantastic judgement and so weird with the greed in the record industry they didn't push B sides in the US. I have been amazed at how many quality ones we have discovered from the UK.
