A look at the sequel that no one asked for... no, not another Call of Duty game, it's GamerGate 2! Social Media's most antisocial are getting frothy over learning about a company named Sweet Baby, who is making games "woke"! Buckley discusses why he never talked about the first GamerGate, and wonders if maybe, just maybe... everyone should try to just enjoy the hobby they spend so much time screaming about online.

Hey well done video. It seems either you haven't researched what any of this dumb sequel no one asked for is about, or you know EXACTLY what it's about and made grade A satire. I'll give a TL;DR cause there isn't a Gamer Gate 2 just people who are doing exactly what you said to.
      >People looked into why Kill the Justice League sucked, Learned about SBI, the changes they make to games and that it is beyond narratives and researched the CEOs own words from her own speeches
      >A Brazzilian guy named Kabutus Rambo made a Steam Group called "Sweet Baby INC. detected" listing all games SBI has worked on with proof links and a do not reccomend.
      >An employee from SBI asked on twitter for his followers to report and flag his account and attempted to contact Steam to get them to revoke his Game Licenses. This didn't work and the employee was banned on Twitter for Targeted harassment of Kabutus Rambo as well as doxing him.
      >This caused a Streisand Effect where people learned about this group and what was going on and joined because they notices SBI is associated with poor quality writing, character art and game design
      >For some reason these ESG consultant groups are desperate to hide their involvement and the changes they make because gamers are "Picky Babies" (CEO of SBI's own words)
      >Upon digging into other consultant groups hired to secure DEI/ESG black rock low interest rates (That is a rabbit hole in its self, but is very real) and then people discovered that the Dept. of Homeland Security was specifically funding these groups, research studies, and targeting gamers as domestic terror threats via the DHS grant numbers (Specifically Take This game research).
      >However rather than focusing on threats like the Cartel using mobile games to recruit children as drug muels they were studying "Racist" and "Sexist" gamers as potential terror threats. People were upset by this waste of tax payer dollars to label them terrorists.
      >Once this was discovered, every "Game Journalist" wrote hit peices ignoring the Kabrutus Rambo starting point spinning everyone upset with poor quality products of consultant group interference as racist sexist terrorists
      >People then dug deeper and discovered a corporate push to revoke licenses to games and end phyisical media. Why? For woke point? Nope, plain old corporate greed and control over consumer behavior. A good portion of this backlash has been directed at this vision of the future where you are sold a license and get it pulled whenever a company wants to sell you a remaster 2 years later.
So the end result. A bunch of gamers got mad their tax money was funding spying on them and labeling terrorists. PR groups (Paid by DHS grants and Tax payers) paying for dying media to write hit pieces and call people wanting to be informed and not buy poorly made games. Media declared it gamer gate 2 and called being talked about and made fun of behind their back "harassment" while ignoring their own behavior.
There is no Gamer Gate 2. People are done giving money to people that hate them and make crappy games.
Somehow this is "harassment". Some how this is Gamer Gate 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!

I think the worry for many is that as firms like sweet baby and pressures from investors continue to diverge from the actual desires of the average (not every) player, that more and more games will suffer from bad writing as the stories have things that otherwise wouldn't have been in them forced in for the sake of inclusion. the more focus gets forced on something that a dev team didn't want to make, the less it gets put on things like the actual gameplay or the deeper meanings and character developments of a game. to be clear, I haven't played forspoken and Im not talking about that specifically here so much as the second part of your comment. I agree that if you're going to hate a game it should be for the shitty gameplay and story not the diversity. the only problem, or at least the fear for many, is that as we force devs to put more DEI in their stories, the more the rest of the game will suffer as a result. Buckley had a valid point that things like micro transactions and inflated budgets, and corporate oversights are far bigger problems in the industry. I just think a lot of people are already calling that out and they're well known issues. Some people are simply warning that another big issue is around the corner and we need to be careful before the camel's back breaks

The way she talks to her cat also is weird 😅 (it would've at least paid off if the cat turned out to talk back, but otherwise, it just makes her look like a "crazy cat lady", lol). And the banter with the bracelet sounds like a poor man's attempt at...what was it called, Wheatley? The robot from Portal 2, I think. The bracelet clearly was supposed to be a character like that, but the dialogue just didn't seem as funny and felt too try-hard.

I'm on board with most of this episode, buuuuut:
A lot of the people who buy microtransactions (mts) are being exploited. Specifically, neurodivergent people and people with gambling problems are extremely susceptible to gambling purchases in games. These are not people with the money to spend on these mts, as some of the largest spenders on these mts live around the poverty line.
Additionally, you have children who do not fully understand the concept of money who take their parent's money and throw it away on mts. Yes, the parents should be more careful about hiding their wallets or lending their cards, but at the same time, they shouldn't have to worry that they are going to lose thousands of dollars to a video game.
So, yes, people do buy mts, but it's not always bc they are making a well-informed choice on a sound mind.

You are 100% correct on that sentiment! Worse yet, some games like Tekken 8 try to hide that crap until later on all on purpose because they know it's worse for optics on their end, yet they do it anyway! (On that note, hope they enjoy them ruining their own service in the process with the fans that wanted it at the time.) Microtransactions especially are ruining gaming a whole lot more than any sort of "woke" shit ever would.

I don't usually play multi-player games that usually push microtransactions, so I've thankfully not been affected by this (though thank you to the comment in this thread about Tekken 8. I haven't bought it yet, but now I might rethink doing so), but my biggest issue with MTS are the way they seem to stiffle the playability. They have created barriers to getting through games without spending money, or if playing online, many games have it that the one who spends the most money for the most gear is the one that will regin supreme. You're punished for not wanting to spend real money on digital items, thus pushing other people out of playing the game.

    • @none-ve6qy
      @none-ve6qy 5 месяцев назад +6

@@KaiserInGilroy2K Since you can't seem to read I'll reiterate my point: people who are susceptible to manipulation aren't making an informed choice.
Think about it this way: if you put booze in front of an alcoholic, are they really making a choice when they take it? No, their brain doesn't function properly when it comes to alcohol, and has created an addictive need when it comes to it. It doesn't matter to them if the alcohol will hurt them because their brain tosses out rational concerns.
People with gambling problems have the exact same issue when you place gambling-based MTs in front of them. Their brain creates an irrational need that overrides concerns like "is this actually something I need" or "do I have the money to spare for this expense?"
This isn't a matter of gullibility. Gullible people can learn, but people whose brains literally don't work the way neurotypical peoples' do struggle to do so, and it's unethical to exploit that for cash.
This is why children aren't allowed in casinos, as they cannot make the properly informed choice about the value of money that is required to safely gamble.

One critical piece that's missing is the disingenuous behavior of the company, and the whole reason why this blew up.
One user on Steam made a list of games the company was involved in. Cringe, but whatever. The company then made a public condemnation about that relatively unknown list in a fit of outrage. That got the spotlight put on them and also unearthed a ton of incredibly poor behavior, like actually fostering a culture war.
Case in point, there is audio from a conference where one of the people from Sweetbaby speaking was encouraging developers in companies to threaten the companies they work for to hire Sweetbaby or else they would leave. Not "Be more inclusive or we will leave", but to hire Sweetbaby specifically to do it.
No one should lose their minds over the option of pronoun selection in Starfield, but I think being upset at the company and the things they have been doing is completely justifiable, even if a lot (though not all) of the outrage is also coupled with anti-woke nonsense.

I don't disagree with you but I do think you missed one aspect of what you're saying. Violent video games don't make kids violent because the violence in the games were a bit over the top. Most kids don't have access to rocket launchers, anyway. Plus, everyone from your parents to the older kids at school warned you that if you get violent, someone gets violent with you. Lose/lose. But putting homosexual agenda stuff in video games doesn't have that same push back, and thus, lacks balance. The media is telling you that being gay makes you special, and what kid who hasn't been indoctrinated with anti-gay propaganda wouldn't consider being gay if it meant being special? It becomes a slippery slope. That kid could potentially put himself into harmful situations, or even do psychological damage to himself. Ya know, just like gay people used to have done to them by society 60 years ago. It's not good no matter who it happens to.

This is a stupid argument. I'm a millineal who had a "girlfriend" in 5th grade when kids traditional mimicked their parents or relatives who are married by playing house. It wasnt meant to be serious but a game based on our imaginations. We didn't suddenly become sexual deviants because we could pay a prostitute for sex in Grand Theft Auto 3.
I have friends who are parents of younger Gen Z kids or Gen Alpha kids. Video games doesn't turn them gay. They have their own preferences of who they are attracted to seperate from games. They dont view gay people as special or media attention on gay people as a way to be cool. They just see as another form of romance between two adults aside from their straight parents. Gay video game characters don't draw their attention. Its the characters fighting skills, personality, clothing or special powers that make the kids want to play as that character. Anything about sexuality is just background noise.
Kids arent as stupid as people like you believe. They are capable of learning and understanding and arent as easily programmable as you claim. Adult figures in their life have a greater influence on them or a RUclipsr/Social media influencer or a musician/entertainer has the ability to mold a kid. Not a fictional video game character's sexuality.

SBI workers and CEO decided to try and get said Brazilian banned and when people started to look into their history, it turns out they're raging racists and sexists. I feel the exact same way, not just about video games, but also movies. I love horror movies, and literally every single time one comes out that I think looks fun (such as Imaginary, Night Swim, Winnie The Pooh Blood & Honey 2, and more), I see nonstop videos and articles and reviews bashing them to high heaven and already making me feel ashamed to go and see them. But, guess what? I go and watch these movies anyway...and I loved them. The reviews made no sense to me, and just infuriated me that all these idiots keep bashing things and trying to steer people away from things that could easily make them happy and entertained. I don't think you're getting the overarching idea so lemme give you an adjacent example. Marvel released a movie based around the antithesis of their core fanbase. It bombed (HARD) and now the future of their most profitable franchise is in question. Did Endgame bomb? Did Infinity War bomb? Did *_any_* of the Avengers films bomb? So why is it that the entire MCU is in danger of being dismantled because one film in the series, that wasn't made to appeal to the franchise's core audience, did badly? These games cost as much as summer blockbusters in many cases, so the stakes are extremely high. Most studios can't weather a $100+ million dollar bomb (like Forspoken was). Representation is fine, if it's organic. Sorta like the anti-FRIENDS. But you can't take established IPs and play label roulette and change characters into acronyms. How about Naughty Dog turn Nathan Drake into a fat Hispanic trans man with borderline personality disorder and a mean Little Debbie habit. That would be okay, right? It's for representation, after all, and that would cover all the bases! That's my only beef. Spending all that money making a product for an audience that doesn't exist (fiscally speaking) and then complain when it bombs and vow to cut back output on ALL games as a result. The Saints Row bomb *_killed the studio._* I don't see why that's so hard to understand. I don't care about the woke crap because when enough of these megapublishers lose enough money, they'll realize how stupid it all was, pandering to people who *_don't buy games,_* and they'll stop. Heck, that tipping point might have already been reached.

    • @ADoseofBuckley

"the antithesis of their core fanbase". That's the problem, that's how people view this. If you're talking about The Marvels, it was a pretty fun movie actually, the singing planet was a little dumb, but it was so much a comic book movie (colorful costumes, fight scenes, plot that doesn't really make a lot of sense if you think too hard about it, little easter eggs for the dorks who actually read comics). It's too bad people go "BUHHH IT WOMEN! NOOOO!"

    • @RenaldyCalixte
      @RenaldyCalixte Месяц назад

You shouldn't have used Marvel as an example because Marvel comics has tons of silly lighthearted stories that feature women or women of color. Are these stories good...eh not really but to act like they're the worst stories ever is stupid. Also stupid by you...acting like every Marvel story is on the level of Avengers Endgame. That's stupid. Was Ant Man 1 the same scale and excitement as Endgame? No. Not all stories in the Marvel Universe are created equal with the same stakes as Endgame or the same 3 white iconic characters as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America. In fact in Endgame there were tons of characters who are women and/or people of color. So you are arguing they shouldn't get screen time in future movies but be background characters?
Marvel's issue was the same as AAA video games that Buckley explained.
      A. The production for these games/recent Marvel films is rushed and lazy.
      B. The budgets are too big and are overly reliant on gimmicks.
      C. Too much corporate interference in the creative process that developers/writers go through.
None of that has anything to do with characters of color or female characters getting more screen time. You are being manipulated by the alt-right to criticize the wrong issues of mediocre or average stories so that the alt-right can mask their intentions to control culture and mass media based on their own twisted that right-wing white men should decide everything because they are inherently smarter than everyone else and not woke.

I think the actual important take away from this, is that these big gaming companies are apparently using these kinds of consulting firms from now on in order to help them curate the story of their games.
From a writers perspective, that the story you created is subject to change, not from real test audiences, but from an independent entity that’s deciding wether or not your story “might” appeal to minority consumers… feels a little silly to me. And that’s not even taking into account other departments who just got more work they now have to squeeze into their incredible tight schedule.
If a writer gets told, “you need to add a black person in this story according to these people.” More often than not, I would say that character won’t contain actual substance and will just be there because the writer was forced to put in, which ends up creating a bleh character that appeals to nobody.
I might not be that well educated on the topic, but I feel like video games didn’t really have trouble in being broadly appealing to a wide variety of people. Diversity in video games, especially as an option for the player, is great, but it should come more organically from the people actually making the game, not from some third party company boardroom.

Consultants like this typically exist for the purpose of being reached out to by developers looking for assistance. In a world of EAs, does that sometimes manifest as an executive taking a story draft and forwarding it over with the directive "make this more inclusive"? Undoubtably.
But the situation I'm pretty sure this company was founded for is a game dev going "hey, our character designer came up with this sick design for our black woman main character, can you look over our story draft to make sure we're not accidentally playing into sterotypes?"
AAA studios are gonna do AAA nonsense regardless, but ideally I think a company like this can help devs who are actually trying to tell good stories tell better ones.

Okay, I'll give you a little context about how this started, and Sweet Baby Inc. kinda deserved it. Well, not kinda, completely.
It literally all started with a steam group of some Latin American dude that didn't like games that SBI had consulted on, and he made the group to show that he didn't recommend the games. There were a few games that weren't consulted on by SBI, and he had missed a few that were. But, anyway, the group had literally 150 people following it and it wasn't really growing. Then, someone at SBI found the group, posted on Twatter that they want all their followers to mass report the group AND the creator so that they can get not only the group permanently banned, but also the creator of the group. Gamers on Twitter saw what they were doing and then went after them. And the steam group grew from 150 people to 250 000 people in a matter of weeks. And the people from SBI didn't let up. They continued trying to get the group banned throughout the backlash, until they themselves started getting banned.
So, yeah, the narrative design and diversity crap is cringe on both sides, but SBI totally deserved all the backlash.

This so-called Gamergate 2.0 is nowhere near as bad as the first one. The Gamergate movement of 10 years ago exposed collusion between game journalist outlets and partisanship between game journalists and independent game developers. A "woke" consultant agency is very minor in comparison. Also, aside from playing the victim, Anita had very little to do with Gamergate.

    • @davidlewis6728
      @davidlewis6728 6 месяцев назад

the problem is that they, along with a bunch of other companies, are strong-arming game devs into promoting a political message, not that minorities exist and are good or whatever, but that anyone who dislikes their shit content is a bigot if it has a minority in it. there is collusion that is directly leading to anti-consumer practices that aren't merely the inclusion of minorities. the same baseless accusations were made about the first gamergate. also, what sparked the "gamergate 2" part of it was when sbi tried to get the guy's steam account deleted just for making a list of their games.

But she gets mad when I put on heavy metal, calling it "devil music" and nags at me ignoring how I'm into a lot of other stuff. Just because there is some violent imagery in the lyrics or the vocals sound gutteral doesn't mean I'm going to go out and kill someone. Buckley fell into the same trap which kicked off the original gamergate.
Sweet baby as a concept is a great company, and its idea of perfecting depictions of other groups of people is something the industry should strive for diversity. The issue comes from the employees of Sweet baby who have proved themselves insanely racist and sexist towards white men (especially their ceo). There are countless Tweets, livestreams, blogs and more of them calling white guys babies, or stating they hate them and more. So basically Great company; shit people running it.
However, what’s made it get called GamerGate 2 is the gaming news media’s response to it; siding purely with on the side of the diverse group (because they’re “obviously” the good guys) and calling the 1 million-large-last-time-I-checked steam group a bunch of bigots without exploring the nuances or reasons of why the steam group blew up (it blew up due to a tweet from SB’s CEO who made a rallying cry to dox the members of the group).
Not to beat around the bush, there are bigots on the gamer side, usually the ones SB and the media cover the most, vocal minority sorta thing, but in truth there are bigots on both sides of the aisles, hence why; GamerGate 2. A very murky grey situation where it gets reported as black and white.
    Edit quickly with some corrections:
The steam group currently has 370,000 people in it, not a million. I think my mind added an extra three zeros onto the end of 100,000. That's on me.
Clip of the ceo doing the cis-white-men comparison to babies: ruclips.net/video/GfMsxjWgUbI/видео.htmlsi=CC0DN0LMSOfgJDjQ&t=1099
Tbh, Mudaha (I can't spell his name) of someordinarygamer does some good coverage of the whole situation if you'd like to know more, tho not perfect because he blatantly states "WOW the writing of Suicide squad was bad" while next to it SBI also credits themselves to Spiderman 2: ruclips.net/video/N4p_O9dSJHw/видео.html
Personally; I'm keeping far fucking away from this whole shitshow to be. To me, both sides are in the wrong and right. We need more diversity in the industry, that's something I've pushed for in my small section of it as a Dev, but the way Sweet Baby Inc is doing by basically turning their nose to specifically white men, it's kinda disrespectful and racist in it's own corrupted right. Likewise with the gamers side; The people are standing up to blatant racism, however there is a subsection of them actively trying to crush arguably the most progressive and best force-for-diversity the industry has seen yet, and the destruction of SBI would be a huge blow to Diversity in the industry. Both sides suck. End of story.

If they wanted to make their own games, while we made ours it would be fine, and this is ignoring the whole making pre-existing IPs "woke" thing. I'll point to Sony's hypocritical content policies for what it does or doesn't allow on its platform, and how what it allows correlates with positive articles from mainstream journalist, and how games that don't tow the line correlate with bad articles. Stellar Blade is the most recent example, outfits were advertised as looking in a particular way, prior to release it was getting articles on how the game is sexist, then it comes out and the outfits are altered via a patch. People are angry, and all the ones who opposed the way it originally looked tell us that it doesn't matter. If it doesn't matter then why did they change it? Meanwhile Baldur's Gate 3 (Which is a great game btw, so don't get me wrong), gets praise from some of the same outlets and journalist for its sex scenes, while hypocritically condemning Stellar Blade. And Stellar Blade isn't some one off anomaly, its not even my worst example I could bring up, but its the breaking point. Just look up PS4 Visual Novel Ports and how they are censored on PlayStation but not Nintendo. And those still aren't my worst example. And I do understand that Sony can decide what they do or don't want on their platform, but the enforcement should be consistent. Why is once game out right banned despite not being nearly as bad as the one with a Motion capped sex scene in it.

And before anyone asks, what Buckley so "ignorantly" didn't mention was that the knowledge of Sweet Baby Inc. existing wasn't what kicked off the firestorm. People had known about them and other like-minded agitprop groups for a while. The start was when a Steam user created the SBI Detected group, which simply looked at places like Wikipedia, IMDB, and SBI's own website and listed the games they worked on. At which point one of the leaders of SBI began to harass the guy on social media, directed his follower to harass him, and then told people to flag the guy's account with Stream, so he would lose his account (i.e. lose access to all the games he bought). He's an ex-Blizzard oldhead that actually worked on the good games from back then.
The reasons people are upset is because this shit runs deep. There's a clear connection between developers, journalists, media outlets and even government. Agendas are being pushed. The journalists who currently write about games are not being honest. Something to remember is that this situation started with corruption in games journalism and people speaking out against that. That is why Anita Sarkeesian is hated. The current "gate" wasn't started by gamers. It was started by someone named Chris Kindred. When people clapped back is when this whole "angry white male gamer" thing was pushed again. I can assure you there's plenty of diversity in those ranks. Yeah your COMPLETELY off this one Buckley.
This whole thing started when a Steam user, Kabrutus, made a Steam Group called "Sweet Baby Inc Detected". All the group did was list what games SBI had worked on. If it ended there then shit would of blown over and nothing would of happened. BUUUUUTTT someone at SBI felt that posting a list of what they worked on was "Harrasment and desparagement", even though Kabrutus and the group to this day dont say whether they are for or against SBI, the group simple lists what SBI worked on, its about as apolitical as you can get.
So SBI harasses the user, reports them to steam, even tries to infiltrate and dox the Discord group memebers. So of course the Streisand effect kicks in and this shit explodes into a major story. Also "gamers" arnt the ones labeling it GamerGate2, that would be the Journos. If you look at their writings for the past 10 years every time they need a boogey man for the bad going on in gaming they bring out GamerGate and beat it like a dead horse. Most of us that where watch GG occur in the first place had moved on after about a year to a year and a half. Its the Journos who cant let it go as it does two things. It gives them a boogey man to point at and it drives engagement on their articles.
Soo yeah Im just going to say this. IF you arnt going to know the full story, and its ok you dont and its ok you dont care, then dont talk about it. Casual takes are kinda how the world got to the shit situation we are in. People with zero knowledge or interest in somthing thinking there thoughts should have the same weight as someone who is deeply invested and looked into a situation.

Investors have been silent for a decade, but now that they can see how much their wallets are bleeding money on OpEd's and anti-white propaganda pieces that have nothing to do with games, they have put their foot down. They are in full damage control mode. Hell, IGN even issued an apology regarding an article on Stellar Blade which said "the main protagonist is a sexualized doll designed by a person who has never seen a woman", which, even ignoring how insulting it is, is first and foremost factually incorrect since the character was modelled by scans and mocap of a South Korean model. That woman literally exists in real life!
In conclusion, I hate to be the one whom you complained about at the start of the video, but in this subject, it's 100% true. You know next to nothing about what either Gamergate or Gamergate 2.0 are about, and you should have dug way deeper before throwing your badly informed opinion about it.

the funny thing about microtransactions is it's actually not a ton of people spending some extra money. it's a small handful of people spending a shitload. wild stuff.

I mean... this channel effectively survives by a small handful of people spending money vs 96% of viewers who never will. So I get it, and I think that's what a lot of these companies have figured out. But I also understand that they need to make these things less predatory, figure out a cap, SOMETHING. NO ONE should be spending $1000 or whatever on EA points to try and get some special digital card they want, which won't even be useable in a year or two when they shut the servers down for the 2024 version of the game.

Yeah, "whales". It's nasty as fuck that publishers have dumped so many resources into designing microtransactions to be perfectly balanced Skinner boxes that'll get just enough people hooked that it's wildly profitable. The people who get hooked tend to be miserable, trying to fill a void, much like addicts. Some of them even ARE addicts, like gamblers.

The problem is also the fact that of the games people know, it's clear that sweet baby inc had next to no real power. Ragnorok has a black character, yes, but her being black has 0 story relevance, she's not even human, she's a joten, a race of mythical giants, so they don't have to adhear to realistic skin tones for their 'region' because they don't even live on earth. Infact the dwarf with blue skin has more story relevance tied to his skin tone then the black teenager who plays as a love interest to the second lead character.
Spiderman 2? it takes place in a major city, turns out, major cities are pretty diverse in america given it's called the melting pot.
suicide league kills the justice squad? find me a single bit of forced diversity? Every character choosen is already a major part of DC and is the same gender and race they've always been. Deadshot's been black for awhile now if not having always been black, harley's always been a woman, captain boomerange's always been australian. John stewart isn't the only green lantern but he's not by any means a new green lantern and is infact more well known as a leaguer then some of the other green lanterns.
Now sweet baby inc in particular has been aggressive in being about forced diversity, hypocrisy, and so forth. Infact if Buckley knew just how they where acting he'd probably make an episode largely in the vein of 'this is how stupid butthurt babies handle criticism' But buckley is right, the gamers spending all this time getting butthurt about included diversity are spending time they could be gaming, being angry at games they weren't going to play vs picking any game they would play. To put it simply, voting with your wallets is flat out The, Best, Play. Because if a company like sweet baby inc wants to go on a fucking self-destructive rampage about how they intend to effectively delete white cis straight males from gaming then let them, don't buy from them. Because that kind of behavior burns bridges. When the majority audience is White, Straight, Cis, and Male (and in many cases most if not all of those) then acting like they need to be eradicated or punished or whatever poor word choice SBI and those like them make, it will make game publishers less likely to work with them.

This video reminded me of Panda Bear's Good Girl/Carrots, specifically the last verse in which the 'carrot' is us, much like the case with music journalism in 2000s-early 2010s indie, a lot of these blogs were pursuing to push certain artists for the scene to become definitive but the most smug had similar tastes, which birthed a pretty good anti-Pitchfork basis by calling these folks 'cultivated'
