How to Save a Dead Maidenhair Fern

- Maidenhair ferns are verrrry sensitive. I've managed to kill mine 3 times so far and each time it's managed to come back to life so don't worry if yours is looking totally done for. It takes a bit of time and patience but if you're lucky, you'll end up with a lovely little maidenhair fern in a month or two.
Luckily mine decided to pop its clogs at the start of spring so it had great conditions to start over in and plenty of time left in the growing season to get back to a decent size before autumn kicks in.
If yours is playing dead then let us know in the comments how long it took before it started showing its first curly little leaf. After a couple of weeks it feels a bit like you're just pointlessly watering a pot of dirt.

After spending 3 weeks in hospital a friend went to my house to check things and told me my maidenhair had died. I told her to cut the whole plant back to 1 cm then burn the tips. Yes I said “burn”. I had to keep telling her I was serious. After about 6 weeks I was pleased to send her a photo of a beautiful bushy healthy plant. This same plant is now 40 years old and every couple of years if it gets tatty I give it the same treatment and it comes back more beautiful than before. I have only read this tip once before and am so glad I did. You will notice trees do the same thing after being in a bushfire.
Does this burning help start new growth? I cut my dead one down to 1cm and have had it like that for a week now. Should I consider burning🤔
@@claramsw Yes, I’ve been giving my maidenhair this treatment for a number of years. Be patient, it will take a few weeks before you start seeing new growth.
@@suespence8381 Very cool, I’ll give it a whirl!
Hello again Clara. I just reread your question again and realised you said your maidenhair was dead. If so, this method won’t bring it back to life. However I trusted my ferns to someone to take care of whilst I was away for a few weeks and they forgot to water them. The ferns were in a very sad state and looked almost dead. I gave them the burn treatment and after struggling to survive they finally made it but it did take a few months to look healthy. As we are coming into the colder months it could take quite awhile for new growth to appear. It’s certainly worth a try. As I mentioned, you will notice trees sending out new growth after a bushfire. It’s a survival thing. Good luck.
@@suespence8381 Hello again Sue, I’m just seeing this. THANKFULLY THANKFULLY today I noticed it has begun to sprout very teeny little sprouts !! The happiest of days. I did end up burning it in the beginning, and I think that helped! I thought it was absolutely a goner. Thank you for your advice :) I didn’t think it would sprout in so little time either
Thank you so so much for making this video!! This is exactly what I needed to watch. I’ve had mine for several months now and had it dry up for the first time. So sad, because it’s such a beautiful plant. Followed advice and cut it back down. I have hope because there are several cute little green baby shoots. Fingers crossed that it will make a full recovery!
Yay! If there's green shoots then hopefully it'll grow back :) I've managed to not kill mine since this video.
Same thing happened to me with my Oxalis Tricolour. I thought it was dead as a dodo. On the advice of my sister, I took the whole plant and buried it under an inch of compost, and left it in a cool spot out of direct light, watering when ever the soil felt dry. The plant revived and is thriving
this was such a great video you deserve more views!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you. I woke this morning to a dried out fern! Going to try and save her with your tips!
This is just the video I was looking for! I’ve just attempted to resurrect Francesca (my maidenhair fern). She dried out very quickly after the intense heat we’ve had so hopefully she makes a come back. Thanks so much :)
Good luck with Francesca! I hope she pulls through. So glad the video helped :) Mine dried up completely three times and she's managed to come back to life everytime, those sudden hot spells are a nightmare for ferns.
Omg I just found my new favorite plant channel!! 😍😍
Brilliant. Thank you
Gary will be pleased! He's not looking as sorrowful as your little guy was at the beginning, so you've actually given me hope :) Great vid, I watched the whole thing and didn't feel bogged down by overexstrenuous info and blah. Will be checking out all your videos and hoping you'll have something for when Bruce, Longines and Clive inevitably try and kick it too.
Set light to it like we do in Australia,, it simulates a bushfire
I saw your blog, and see that you just started your RUclips channel! You’re pepper seed experiments will definitely help me with my hydroponics experiment, so thanks.
Keep up the amazing work, I’m sure your channel will take off soon!
Thanks so much! I'm glad it helped. What experiment are you doing? I started looking into hydroponics last year and really want to give it a go. It looks like such an amazing way to grow things. Good luck with your peppers!
I just got one at the dollar store and it looks dead so I didn't know how aggressively I could trim this and still have it come back. Thank you for this video, which gives me hope I can revive this fern to its original glory. I hope my patience pays off.
I’m new to your channel and this is the first video I just watched. Will definitely try this and be checking out more of your videos! Thank you for this information. I was about to chuck my maidenhair
Great video. I have been doing this but not the burning, for a couple of years now with great success. I give a total haircut each time, only because once I start trimming I get carried away. My maiden hair plants are outside in a position that clearly suits them and they always look fantastic.
I was crushed when I came into work this morning and my fern was unhappy and looked dead except for a couple sprigs that popped back to life.
I will try your method and hopefully can revive her completely.
Thank you so much for this video I will be following your channel
Thank you, I will try...hope to see my little fern reborn !
Good luck!
Neat. We all know how difficult to care a maidenhair fern
Finally trimmed mine after a couple months of not growing so I hope it grows now
Thank you for this encouraging video.
I am so grateful for this video. I have a struggling drama queen at home and now I can't wait to go home and give her a big haircut.
Thank you for this video. I feel hopeful for my maidenhair fern now.
Thanks for the advice.. i will try it.
I will try to do it with my apparently dead fern. Thank you so much!!!
Good luck!
This gives me hope!
I divided and repotted my boston fern and it all dried up and looks dead.
I'll trim it back and see if it comes back.
Same here! Just planned to throw it to the bin. Now I am going to cut down all the branches!
Oh my god this is exactly my fern 😂😂😬😳. I’ve just followed your lead and given her a trim. Fingers and toes crossed!
thank you so much for this, i thought i killed her :'(
Me watching AFTER I did everything. Idk I just cut everything down since it died during a bad depressive episode now that I'm better I hope my baby plant can thrive as well
Sorry to hear you've been feeling down and I hope you're feeling loads better! and that your fern survives. Is it showing any signs of life yet?
@@daisydawes8231 i think the fern is long gone but I planted some seeds in a garden and some houseplant pits and they've all sprouted omgggg I'm so excited they're so cute
Thank you!
Thank you
I bought my fern at the dollar store. I had to rescue it sometimes they don't water them. It still had some good leaves but RN they are crimpling .. I'm keeping it under shade and a bowl of water outside. But this video helps I wont feel too discouraged if my leaves die. Same thing happened to my mint it died and all the rooting and dirt I just watered it now I came back with beautiful foilage.
omg thank you! i thought i killed it and it would never come back, but i couldn't bare to just throw it away. it already has a tiny stem of leaves coming back!
Is this true for fern plants in general or specific to maidenhair? Nice video, I'll be following your channel. Have a happy Christmas x
This exactly happened to me. Yes they are drama queens.. but they do resurrect.
Have you made the “how to care for the maidenhair fern so it doesn’t die again” video that you referred to at the end? I couldn’t find it
I relate so much to this video, haha. I am not sure how many times I have gone through this with mine. I've had it for 4 years now and at least once a year I end up losing all of it and having to let it all regrow again. Poor thing. I've had a few others over the years but this is the only one that I have kept and just keep reserecting. It's taken a decade but I finally figured it out, kind of. It only took a couple days for mine to start growing again this time around. I was super happy. She just got too dry for 2 days that I was out of town. I forgot to water her right before I left. Oh well, I think she has forgiven me haha.
Think how big our ferns would be if we didn't have to keep cutting them right back haha.
Thanks so much for this hopefully mine makes it 😔
My plant looks similar in day 28, but not in 47, the leaves didn't open and then nearly died again now 😭
I just got one from the grocery store fingers crossed she lives 🤞
I get to day 64 level and the brown leaves start again...
I just recued a very dead looking fern from the supermarket. I'm hoping i can bring her back! Sje was reduced...😢
I didn’t know ferns could come back to life so my very first fern, I unpotted it and tossed into a ziplock bag to keep as a memory. But my second fern, it completely lost all its foliage and then had a new frond baby the next day. I was like “!!?? I could have kept watering my first fern and seen if it could grow back???”
I wanted you to see my picture of Boston fern your preference on it
Can I trim my dry fern in the winter time?it is January in California , no snow but windy and cold conditions! Please help!
Mine gives me new laves but they die after a couple of days...
Thanku so much. Please tell me what kind of soil I should use for ferns..? Can u say some homemade potting mix
I don't use a homemade potting mix. I just use a standard potting soil mix that I buy from my local garden centre.
Mine has only had 1-2 stems/leaves for months now. Is too much light (indoor) a possible problem?
Wait, so what do Maiden Hair ferns actually look like when dead? Because mine still has green on it, but it really does not look or smell good at all.
Do the seedlings grow as curls and pop leaves or they grow leaves directly ?
The plant fist grows as curls and when it reaches approx. 5cm (2”) the leaves appear.
I had to cut mine down and it started to grow back, but all the new stems keep dying no new leaves have opened how do i keep the stems alive
Are you letting them dry out between watering? I tried to make sure mine never dried out completely and I kept it somewhere out of direct sun. Too much sun can crisp them up really quickly. It could be to do with humidity as well if the air is quite dry, if you've got a squirt bottle try giving them a spritz of water every now and then. Good luck!
I accidentally sprayed mine with neem oil 😭😭😭 I just showered it in hopes it’ll wash off the oil but 😭😭😭
May I know where can I buy this plant
It depends which country you're in. Mine was a gift from a friend but most garden centres have them.
This just happened to my maidenhair, and it's only been 3 days with me :') . I dind't know the huge amount of water it needed, if the leaves don't come to life tomorrow I'll be cutting her.
Mine is just sloooowly dying 🙄
👍👍👌👌🤗🤗🙏🥰❤️❤️
I literally stayed over at my bfs house for ONE NIGHT came home and it completely dried out
DO IT ON FERN ON ADVENTURE DAY
Then it really didn't die..
