    BTW, the reason I say it really doesn't matter what his background is because it really doesn't lol. At least to me his character is not connected to anyone, but to himself. If he indeed has dragonblood for whatever reason, even if he was part Lyseni or something creates a great parallel with the dragonseeds during the Dance and all the people who tried to claim a dragon or at least get close to one and this is it.

    I do like the parallel you draw between Ygritte and Daario, and especially that Daario is this amalgam of the men in Dany's life. Ygritte is much the same for Jon, being a combination of Arya, Old Nan, even Catelyn with the red hair and others. This intermediate partner who represents the primary characters fantasies, a recurring pattern in Martin's romances.

    I was halfway thru the video when I started writing how Daario is all men in Dany's life so far and then I had to delete the comment 🤣
    Completely agree that his character will everything, it ties everything nicely together. I must admit the moment you made the comparison with Ygritte it was like something clicked in my brain, it's really interesting how rarely people want to see this so clearly (or simply deny it) because of the character's genders!
    One thing I have to admit is that I really wish all of Dany's children to live, but that is simply a wish I have

  • @BeteBlanc
    @BeteBlanc 10 месяцев назад +6

    Your strongest argument, imo, is your noting his parallels to elements in Jon's narrative. I would argue Brown Ben is a version of the same element Tormund fills for Jon. He's sort of a Bael the Bard thing. People don't tend to see Ygrette that way, but that's because those elements are gender swapped. Jon is the "Stark maid" in this narrative so the Bael figure would naturally have to be a girl.
    I'm not sure of the all representations or the implications you suggest, but they do make a general sense. I would say his role is to tell us what Dany is actually attracted to and inform of the general internal conflicts she struggles with.
    I love that you made the Ygrette connection, it's tremendously difficult to convince people of the five parallel narratives and using them to translate, predict, and understand the larger story by comparing them.
    All the false gold represents dhe lies he's cloaked in. The real gold in his tooth may point to the kernel of truth. A gold tooth may symbolically be similar to "corn" in his context. A crow with corn in his mouth. I waffle between connecting him to Ygrette and Mance. In the case of Mance he's a lost crow, and the gold tooth reminds me of Mormont's raven.

    χαῖρε! Happy New Year! I like the idea of Dany literally and figuratively leaving Daario and her "Bad Boy Phase" behind in Essos (1 Corinthians 13:11 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a (wo) man, I put away childish things.) He will surely go out in some sort of EPIC! fashion, but I'd never thought of Viserion being lost so early. The fact that he didn't "fly over" to Essos in the first place is a great, GRRmy little clue that he may not "fly back" to Westeros either. He could get away with it when small and on land, but the dragons will have to be able to fly for some long stretches to get across even the "Narrow Sea". Not unlike birds during a migration. Also, I will now forever hear "Daario Naharis" with a groovy Greek accent :) Cheers!

      In general, I have come to accept the fact that most couples are not good in ASOIAF, but the medieval setting is also a big reason for that and I can understand the reason and move past it. Do I like it, no, not necessarily, but I have come to terms with it. I just don't get people who criticize one over the other. If we apply these kinds of standards then we need to apply them everywhere.
      We feel Daario is 26+, but we do not know it, for all we know is 20 like Aurane is 22 or something. And people, like with Lyanna and Rhaegar, have extreme issues, to the point of trying to twist certain situations. The thing is that the situation with the 15-year-old Jon and the 19-year-old Ygritte who had the upper hand during the cave situation and before isn't that much better, by modern standards, but we hardly comment on it. As I said in another comment as well I imagine myself already in my second year at uni with a high schooler, which is weird.

In terms of show Daario, i don't mine that he mainly serves as a love interest. I think this is okay for any character man or woman, so long as they serve to further the main character's purpose. Perfect and entertaining Video, thank you for your hard Work.
    I think you are right, Daario will die and probably in the next Book. But unlike Sansa (sorry I have a soft spot for Red-Heads ^^) I can't see her ending up with a family in Westeros. She is a Leader, a Leader in War and she dreamt of fighting the Others, at least that is one possible interpretation of her Dream of the Battle at the Trident. Also, she dreams of ONE Dragon at that Battle, so maybe Rhaegal will be dead. Sometimes in these Books, the Names of People and Pets indicate the Death/Fate they will ultimately face. Arya gave her Direwolf the Name Nymeria and she travels the World like the Queen of Ny Sar.
    Sansa called her Direwolf Lady and she always acts Ladylike, but ends up in Captivity and faces a lot of Deaths, etc.
    So the idea that Viserion will die similar to his Namesake, at the Hands of Danys Lover, when he gets pissed, is a possibility. But I don't think that this will be the End of the manipulation, until now she only had to deal with People who manipulated her in a Certain Way and mostly in a very obvious Way. But she is not very experienced in the ways people like Varys, Tyrion and Baelish manipulate People. And Daenerys has some abusive Traits as well, she uses one of her Handmaidens for Sexual Service, although that Person still thinks she has no other option than to do as Dany asks.
    Back to Daario, he manipulated Daenerys in a certain Way, a Way Tyrion would never try. Varys, Tyrion and Baelish manipulate People by using information against them. Or they use People to do their dirty work so that they won't have to do it and more importantly that they won't be blamed for whatever happens. Neither of these 3 does the dirty work regularly. I think the only time we see Varys do the dirty work is when he kills that Lannister-Person.
    So I don't think that the manipulations are over for Dany. They just change and I think because Daeny and her treatment of some People will remind Sansa of Cersei, this will lead to the tension between these 2 young Women. Even the show pointed out that Daenerys and Sansa have similarities that the Fandom refuses to acknowledge. It would be far more interesting if Sansa is suspicious of Dany because Dany triggers her Trauma, instead of 2 Women who bicker about a Man. And Dany being suspicious of Sansa because she tells her the truth and tries to tell her what to do, something Daenerys doesn't want anymore. 2 Women who could easily be Friends are suspicious of each other because the other triggers their Trauma.

  • @OfAshesPhoenix
    @OfAshesPhoenix 10 месяцев назад +12

    I think the reason why Daario is disliked while Ygritte is liked is because Daario is a male character entirely subservient to a female character as a love interest, which is still an unusual concept not only in fantasy, but in storytelling more general. Female characters are often completely subservient to the main male protagonists as love interests, especially in the more stereotypically ""masculine"" genres, like fantasy. When we have a girl be the main protragonist in a story and she has a male romantic interest, that man usually also has something else to do in the story as well.
    While Ygritte does serves solely as Jon's love interest in that "classical" sense, Daario does not. Dany has always occupied a pretty masculine space in the story as a ruler, conqueror, dragonrider and many people can't stand it. Daario hate seems to be an extension of this - people may be a bit weirded out by the fact that he really exists for no reason other than for Dany to have some internal love vs duty conflict (cause this sort of conflict should be reserved for noble, righteous guys, not women!) Which is why I think so many people search for secret reasons why he was inserted in the story, like for example in the Meereenese Blot, how he symbolizes war while Hizdahr symbolizes peace or the Daario=Euron fuckery lmao. I've never seen anyone claim that, say, Melisandre symbolizes this in Jon's arc while Val symbolizes that, or how Penny is a secret Faceless Man hired by Tywin to kill Tyrion or something. Really makes you think ‼
    Here's my dollar store psychoanalysis. Great video as always!

      Come to think about it Daario is a manic pixie dream boy😂 That being said, he is an exceptionally well-crafted love interest, considering he is just that pretty much. Yes, he does other stuff, but is always "off-screen", his character is important to Dany's narrative and it is done spectacularly well imo. I don't know, I wish all love interest "side chicks" were written half as well.

      I wouldn't call Hizdar at all passionless and I would certainly call him, very much cruel to the point of being a sadist.
      "Oh, gods," moaned Reznak, "he's eating her!" The seneschal covered his mouth. Strong Belwas was retching noisily. A queer look passed across Hizdahr zo Loraq's long, pale face-part fear, part lust, part rapture. He licked his lips.
      And the times when drunk and sleeps with Dany again he doesn't come forward as passionless and political. He was also very much giddy when the dawrves would get eaten, by the lions and so on. He is cruel and finds pleasure in very very disturbing things. Like Daario Hizdar wants the queen, wants the power. It wasn't the peace he wanted, or to protect his peers.

  • @gort2279
    @gort2279 2 месяца назад

    Imo Daario is representative of the side of Dany which wants Fire and Blood, while Hizdhar represents peace and compromise. Daario is everything she wants, but dangerous, violent, and uncertain. Hizdahr cannot please her, and nor can peace, because it means settling with less

    • @CompanyOfTheCat
      @CompanyOfTheCat  2 месяца назад +1

      I disagree that Hizdahr represents peace. He never was, on the contrary in several instances is portrayed as a sadist, who loves violence a little too much. If anything Hizdar represents both the new and old Ghiscari status quo.
      “Be patient, my sweet,” said Hizdahr. “They are about to loose the lions.”
      Daenerys gave him a quizzical look. “Lions?”
      “Three of them. The dwarfs will not expect them.”
      She frowned. “The dwarfs have wooden swords. Wooden armor. How do you expect them to fight lions?”
      “Badly,” said Hizdahr, “though perhaps they will surprise us. More like they will shriek and run about and try to climb out of the pit. That is what makes this a folly.”
      Hizdahr: Barsena is much loved. The *bravest woman I have ever seen.*
      Belwas: *Fighting girls* is not so brave. Fighting Strong Belwas would be brave.
      “Oh, gods,” moaned Reznak, “he’s eating her!” The seneschal covered his mouth. Strong Belwas was retching noisily. A queer look passed across Hizdahr zo Loraq’s long, pale face-part fear, *part lust,* part rapture. *He licked his lips.*
      The king looked around wildly. "Her? She's nothing. *A bedslave."* He raised his hands. "I misspoke. Not a slave. A free woman. Trained in pleasure. Even a king has needs, *she … she is none of your concern, ser.* I would never harm Daenerys. Never."
      Hizdahr is responsible for a very fickle "peace", that the ex-slaves detest, and that partially resumed slavery.
      The Yunkai'i can be persuaded to allow all your freedmen to remain free, I believe, if Your Worship will agree that the Yellow City may trade and train slaves unmolested from this day forth. *No more blood need flow.*"
      "*Save for the blood of those slaves that the Yunkai'i will trade and train,*"
      "Great Cleon is a slaver himself."
      "I know that *the Mother of Dragons will not abandon us* in our hour of peril. Lend us your Unsullied to defend our walls."
      "I am no lady," the widow replied, "just Vogarro's whore. You want to be gone from here before the tigers come. Should you reach your queen, give her *a message from the slaves of Old Volantis*." She touched the faded scar upon her wrinkled cheek, where her tears had been cut away. *"Tell her we are waiting. Tell her to come soon."*
      And if the piece he is responsible for and presumably represents, doesn't satisfy the freedmen and ex-slaves, then who is this peace even for? The slavers?

    Isn't Ygritte like 2 years older than Jon? We don't know how old Daario is but he's always felt 26+ to me. (So 10+ years older than Dany.) Yes there is some hypocrisy because Jon is a man, but I also think the age gap gives off waaaaay different vibes.

    • @CompanyOfTheCat
      @CompanyOfTheCat  10 месяцев назад +4

      We feel Daario is 26, but we do not know it, for all we know is 20 like Aurane is 22 or something. The thing is that the situation with the 16-year-old Jon and the 19-year-old Ygride who had the upper hand during the cave situation and before isn't that much better. As I said in another comment as well I imagine myself already in my second year at uni with a high schooler, which is weird.
      That being said, in general, I have come to accept the fact that most couples are not good in ASOIAF, but the medieval setting also is a big reason for that and I can understand the reason and move past it. I just don't get people who criticize one over the other. If we apply these kinds of standards then we need to apply them everywhere

      The age gap on its own is not that crazy, but was it completely necessary to have 16-year-old Jon with a 19-year-old? I imagine myself already in my second year at uni with a high schooler, which is weird.
      That being said, in general, I have come to accept the fact that most couples are not good in ASOIAF, but the medieval setting also is a big reason for that and I can understand the reason and move past it. I just don't get people who criticize one over the other.

      @@CompanyOfTheCat Its worse! Jon was 15 not even 16. I don't think 'Medieval setting' is a good defense although yes many use it. Medieval setting explains why marriages may be unequal - but these relationship are real relationships. The worst, of course, is lyanna and Rhaegar. Also, are you only 19!?

    • @CompanyOfTheCat
      @CompanyOfTheCat  10 месяцев назад +2

      I am 25, but at 19 I was in my second year at uni and I cannot even imagine myself back then with a 15-16-year-old when I was 19 I had the exact same reaction, he is 15 my gal wtf.
      The relationships are unequal, but the couples are not written as such, and the situations are not exactly common so we can apply these standards verbatim. I don't think the medieval setting is a defense, but it is also something we must consider when analyzing the story as a story and not GRRM's writing. We can blame GRRM for that, we can straight up not like it, but analyzing the text with this mindset doesn't work out very well from a literary stand point.

    couldnt daario be one of saera targaryens children? theres nothing saying she didnt have a passel of them, her parents certainly did, and she moved around continents a lot, as did her clientele. she liked seaports, and was wealthy enough to afford to raise children with expensive tastes. she also woulve taught the kid the value of hiding ones identity, as she hid her valyrian origins under a septas garb, hiding her hair.

    • @CompanyOfTheCat

      Child, definitely not. Saera was wildin' 200 years before the current timeline, she died somewhere around 100AC as far as we know, and we are on 300AC now.
