I've noticed that songs from the DPRK have definite Soviet and Slavic influences, like the structure of the song, and the way the tune is, it's all Soviet and Slavic. In fact, one song had the exact same tune as a song a sang in Ukrainian school.

actually i think the late 90's were the period where they made the worst personality cult songs to the point where they just shout "we will defend kim jong il with our lives" with an epic orchestra in the background. the famine didn't really affect their culture in a very positive way. they produced much better stuff before 1994 and after 2002.

A lot of their songs are from Japan, China or Russia. I remember few of these melodies (not this video, but there are thousands out in net) from my own childhood in soviet era. What I very like here, is that composition is something I remember from music lessons where teached how they should be. I like these songs almost always have very concrete end and a lot of these have also concrete beginning. They also are very melodic and predictable, very easy to remember. Most of western music can be turned down somewhere in the last minute or even more and nothing important is lost.

actually i think the late 90's were the period where they made the worst personality cult songs to the point where they just shout "we will defend kim jong il with our lives" with an epic orchestra in the background. the famine didn't really affect their culture in a very positive way. they produced much better stuff before 1994 and after 2002.

A lot of their songs are from Japan, China or Russia. I remember few of these melodies (not this video, but there are thousands out in net) from my own childhood in soviet era. What I very like here, is that composition is something I remember from music lessons where teached how they should be. I like these songs almost always have very concrete end and a lot of these have also concrete beginning. They also are very melodic and predictable, very easy to remember.
