@Howdy Justice How often does La Plata, Mo have a white Christmas? 1 time in 4 or 5? Maybe even less than that? That's 45 days down the road. This is early. Not unheard of, but EARLY!
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? I had just logged off from moderating and saw that this might be a possibility on ATCS. So thank you, Virtual Railfan, for posting this. Two thumbs up!
La Plata Missouri is on the BNSF Marceline Subdivision. Both trains were traveling east on the sub. The Marceline is a Fort Madison Iowa to Kansas City Metro line that also carries Amtrak's Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles. Both were unit trains, the first either being oil or ethanol, the second being intermodal, mostly piggyback. If I were a betting person, both trains will be on the Chillicothe Sub as soon as they cross the Mississippi River.
Races like this at La Plata are pretty rare. We'll see on-camera "meets" (opposite directions) usually once a day or more, but a race? Not too often. Enjoy!
@@PaulCashman I drive trains in the UK, some lines I work have 20 trains per hour so this kind of running is impossible, that being said I have had a race like this once in my career, though it was at 2am when all the passenger services had finished
I actually recognize the area (I used to live in Charles County, and as La Plata is the county seat, there is only one area where such a crossing could exist) - the northern corporate limits. UNfortunately, it does NOT exist in reality (while there IS a part of the CSX Popes Creek Subdivision where there is a siding in La Plata itself, it's not that long, and ends between grade crossings (specifically, between Charles Street to the south, and Radio Station Road to the north). The northern part of VR La Plata is the Radio Station Road grade crossing. Radio Station Road itself runs between Washington Avenue and MD 488, and passes - among other areas - La Plata High School and the HQ, CC Board of Education (both of which are east of that northern grade crossing). The Charles Street grade crossing is just south of the town's train station (and the southern end of the dual-rail section, which IS properly switched, and is still there today) The real northern end is before the only other grade crossing of the CSX PCS in the town limits between Radio Station Road and Charles Street - and that single grade crossing is both why the siding ends early and why there are no other grade crossings. The Pope's Creek Subdivision had two customers it served - the military and PEPCO.
Looks like the Tanker Train was holding Steady. The Back of the Trains couldn’t have been more Even for both Trains. I Liked the 2nd View. 👍 Thanks!
That's one heck of a catch right there! Thanks VR!
Freight trains, snow, vast cargo types and a train race? This is becoming my favorite cam!
We know who wins this one!
One is really "tanked", and the other is well "contained!"
Best comment!

@@DifferentSaturner, I thank you!
The most unusual thing about this race is how early it is in the year to see snow in Missouri.
We usually get 1-2 November snows along with 1-2 in late March. This was a Vortex snow day.

Richard Gerlach it’s not that early tbh...
Stunning photography highlighted by the snow.
The tank car express had the "inside track".
Tanks for that funny one.

Nice catch! I like seeing the trains race side to side with each other! Really nice!
That was awesome. Toward the end on the PTZ it looked like both trains were at even speeds, which is pretty nifty for a tanker unit consist vs. a Z.
What a rare sighting, but all the same it's beautiful , thanks for sharing this video with us all .
Amazing footage with the snow flying! Virtual Railfan does it again!
Epic video shot. Especially the 360 cam👍
Exceptional footage

AMAZING!!! LIKE FROM BRAZIL!!!
Cool video VRF!
Love the KCS Lines paint scheme.
What a race
WOW! Never seen a race at La Plata, maybe a ethanol train? Definitely flammable with the buffer cars up front 🤔
Almost certainly ethanol, yes, but they were empty.
Beautiful!
Very good video.
And it's cold in this state.
Down the stretch they come.... Nice
KCS! Love KCS, I don't see them very often.
the first train looks like a caterpillar.
@ 3:08...'cool hat, bro!'
Cool video
Glad I wasn't camping out between those tracks....
Man you must have so few trains for this to happen

At the end it is like 2 Friends running together!
No fair.
8096 had the outside radius.
Take it to a straight stretch in Arizona or Texas.

At 3:08 is part of an Amish Pit Crew. _.....One of those Engines is a WOODBURNER !!!!!!!_

Oh Great! Old man winter's comin' 😠
No buffer car at the end of tanker train ?
Because it was an empty tanker train. They usually have them in the front once their empty.
if some one pull out in front what do you think would happen
Those tanks seemed empty.
When it absotively, possilutely has to be there on time... BNSF's duel commitment?
It always was cool how when I train go by, and it's just constant noise, and the second it ends... silence.
Neck and neck, or , tail and tail?
Anyone know the symbol of the tank train?
Both ended at the same time
The track curves again east of the station. then bhsf will have the inside track.
one train is drafting the other
Fuel and freight

@Howdy Justice My mom's in heaven sir.
One is rectangle the other is round 🤭
No cabooses?
Cabooses haven’t been on the back of trains for a long time.
@@LoowitRail OH I see.. Thanks..
You must not live by a busy mainline that has about 50 trains a day on it. They don’t use cabooses anymore. They switched to computers in the 80’s.
Yes but not in revenue service.
Wow I’m early
It's always better with more than 1.
