Just ask any decent Principal trumpet why they are so good and generally, they will say they play in a great section. The 3rd and sometimes the 4th player is the bedrock of the section and they offer support and balance to the principal. Also, they tend to double on piccolo trumpet and /or cornet parts as well. The lower trumpet parts of well-written orchestral scores are very interesting.
It could be many reasons, but some trumpet players like to play tutti parts (2nd, 3rd, 4th trumpet) and some like principal parts. Not everyone like the pressure a principal trumpeter has to live with. That could be one reason atleast :-)
I really liked this video
54:52 Beethoven
01:02:54 Beethoven 5
Isn't it spelled "principal'' when applied to the player? In principle, the principal will play the1st trumpet parts.
Entertaining video,thks.
Can someone explain why you would play as a 3rd trumpet player for 20+ years instead of a playing up when the position opens up?
