- This is an 8-bit cover of Another Part of Me (Stage 3) from the Genesis/Mega Drive game Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, done in Famitracker using the VRC6 Chip.
Moonwalker was released 27 years ago today in the US, August 24, 1990. To celebrate that, I decided to do this cover. The song itself was originally released on the "Bad" album in 1987, which means the original song was released 30 years ago. The game is debatably good (I think most people think its a cool game, with mostly everyone agreeing that the difficulty is kind of too much in the later stages), but one that isnt debatable is the music kicks ass and are awesome 16-bit renditions of some of his best songs. I chose this song because Smooth Criminal has already been done, and I wanted to do one that wasn’t so here we are. That and its one of my favorite songs of his.
Since I already knew how to play it on piano, tracking the notes was easy, its just balancing that was difficult as usual. This time i took a different approach though by lowering the max volume down significantly to get everything listenable. I also didnt use Triangle+Saw as I usually do with VRC6 because I really wanted the Triangle to be the only bass, and the Saw could be used for the chords. I used it to compliment the chords and to do the guitar part, while the Squares well be squares. I added some fun sample usage in there at the end of the loops, and I ended it in a fun way, instead of looping and fading out. And yes, those are all Samples in the finale, ones that I ripped myself, no using wave files or anything. You can tell cus they kind of sound crunched lmao. I wanted really to add some parts of the album version but I decided meh i wouldnt really know how to meld it in there properly.
Hope you like it.
Special thanks to 8bitdanooct1 for the Main Samples
and Dan for the picture

Michael Jackson stars in Castlevania: Moonwalk Under The Moonlight
it always seemed unusual that they had this song in lieu of thriller in the game, in what was clearly a thriller-inspired level
it's really good! very faithful to the original, the vrc6 pseudo-synth is on point and the use of sonic 3 samples is clever
ZeroJanitor It was due to the person who actually wrote Thriller. Only dance and I believe choreography was by Michael. Another man wrote the song and lyrics, and had not given permission for its use. Only the original release had snippets of it for the Dance Magic attacks, and a prototype had the entire thing for the stage.
I'm still dancein to this man i love this
Funky as hell
Excellent job :D!
