The series really seems to hit people in different ways. For someone who has lost several people in my life in a short time, it hit me like a freight train. All of that raw grief bubbled up. That said, it is an exceptional piece of storytelling. And Episode 10 is such a superb episode. The wait for Season 2 is going to be hard.
@@dawnfallon6812 I'm currently on episode 7 but even so I can tell this emotional roller-coaster will keep going until the end of the series. Glad you liked it too. @@ExpectoRidiculum As a friend of mine likes to say, It's a sad day. Your feelings are quite correct about the series going forward. The tone does change a bit once the arc you are now beginning (Ep7) completes. I feel for your own loses. I do hope you found a way to make lemonade with the lemons life gave you. I have been told many times that time heals all wounds, and maybe there is some truth to it. I cannot say for certain myself...so maybe more time is required. C'est la vie. Frieren is absolutely the best anime of the year, and I'm so glad that you're reacting to it, #ExpectoRidiculumReacts. My favorite thing about this series is the beautiful animation, and also your cosplay of the main character.
The good news for development is that the flashbacks don't stop (in fact if there was ever an object lesson in how to use flashback well it is this show), the bad news for your emotions is that the flashbacks don't stop.
oh, I fully agree! and since I'm on episode 7 now - some of these flashbacks literally hit the audience in unexpected moments and there were times where I was laughing and the next second tears were pouring down my face - absolute masterpiece! and emotional roller coaster 😊
Himmel was such a light in her life. And vice versa. He must have been so elated to first see her again after those fifty years. And the cute way that she'll call him a "fool" for simply complimenting her magical abilities. It's like when you speak about someone you're so incredibly close to in a playful disparaging way, but you know they really mean the world to you. It's very tragic - their relationship. But therein lies beauty in such tragedy. Never before have I been moved to tears as much as what these first two episodes did to me. This anime is unlike any that I've seen before it. Always be sure to keep those tissues nearby and enjoy the ride!
I've done a lot of editing here cutting out those tissues I also feel that way. My initial thought was that his body was so tired he was preservering energy hoping to meet her one day and then their last journey to see meteor shower took a lot out of him but since his wish came true - he now rests in peace 💔Oh Frieren.. 😭
I've always imagined it being funny if during those 50 years, every guest who ever visited Himmel couldn't shake the eerie feeling that something was wrong with that cabinet or even the whole room 😂
I love how before, Himmel wanted to show her those flowers. Now, because she cares so much for him, she finally can know that flower. And even more, she can magically make as many as she wants. And the anime ends with Frieren and Fern, and Himmel's statue, and a small field of blue flowers.
I absolutely love the moment where she followed the animal footprint and found the flowers at the top of the tower. It felt so special and beautiful! 💜
I'm not gonna lie, I subscribe to @KleinerPixel as she does one of the best cosplays and make ups in the world (in my opinion) and so before I watched Frieren I saw her absolute masterpiece of make-up and really wanted to try my own take on this! I'm glad you think I've done a good job 😊
Subbed! Found you from your Wrong way to use Healing magic reactions Welcome to the feels train that is Frieren. Can't wait for your reactions to the series
Thank you! 😊 @wjpark01 - I'm glad you also liked The wrong way to use the healing magic 😊Frieren is indeed something entirely else! I also think it makes us feel nostalgic or sad in so many ways as we all have our own stories and experiences and I bet many people can somehow relate 😊
I loved your comments at the end, because of Frieren's perspective on time Himmel is still very alive in her memory. Just like in the woman who was saved by Himmel. The time you spent with someone vs the impact they have on your life is such a strong theme throughout this series and makes it so heartwarming to watch, I just love it.
A very special detail I found that nobody else talks about is the opening. The story is about Frieren's perspective changing, especially about Himmel. The names are in German, Himmel meaning sky or heaven. The very first shot of the entire show? Looking up at the sky from Frieren's point of view in the wagon.
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Sousou no Frieren! I hope you really enjoy this anime series! A lot of modern Japanese fantasy is tailored after the Lord of the Rings. Frieren is very Tokeinesque, so Elves are nearly immortal, Dwarves live a few hundred years and humans 70-90 years. Just a few things if no one else has mentioned it; this anime is really about paying attention to little details, as small things make emotional impacts later in series. For instance, the reason why Frieren buys a hair clip in Episode 3 that had a butterfly design was because in Episode 2 the first time Fern showed Heiter her magic, she made an illusion of glowing butterflies. You DO learn why Frieren has a habit of collecting spells, and it all starts with her master, who is revealed in Episode 4 and you learn way more about her in the penultimate mid-season episode 10. There is speculation that since Priests are the only ones who can effectively use holy magic (dispelling and resisting curses, casting holy affinity offensive magic, blessings and healing) that they are also granted longer lives than normal. Some people even say that Heiter passed away when he was over 100. Every name in Frieren is a German word and they have meaning. There is a school of thought that this whole story is Frieren's reminiscence, since people are named for concepts that encapsulates a memory/impression, rather than normal German names. Frieren - Freezing - it's speculated that Frieren's emotional state was frozen by tragedy revealed in Episode 10, and that her master was instrumental in thawing her, culminating in meeting with her friends. Another interpretation is that Frieren's relational state was frozen, an her time with Fern will continue the change in her that her time with Himmel did. Himmel - Sky or Heaven - pay attention to the times they show the Sky, as it almost always refers to Himmel or the memory of him Heiter - Jolly - Heiter is shown in future flashbacks as deflecting difficult emotional stress with humour or self-deprecation. Eisen - Iron - a great name for one of the strongest warriors in history Fern - Remote or distant Stark - Strong Flamme - Flame - The founder of Human Magic, Frieren's human Master. Potentially named for the Promethean legend, the giant who taught the gift of fire to humans (technology & civilization) in Greek mythology, but also for setting Frieren on the path to thawing her heart. Qual - Torment Aura - Aura Lügner - Liar Linie - Line, as in production, watch the way she summons things Draht - Wire Graf Garnat - Count Garnet - the stone that is part of the family amulet is a red garnet. Kraft - Power, Strength Sein - Being or Existence Kanne - Container or pot Lawine - Avalanche Wirbel - Whirl or Vortex Übel - Evil or Villain Denken - Thinking Land - Country Richter - a reference to the founder of hte Richter Scale, the measure of earthquake intensity Laufen - Runner Ehre - Honor or Glory Scharf - Sharp Sense - Scythe Genau - Exactly or Precisely Falsch - Wrong or Mistaken Lernen - Learn Edel - Noble Blei - Lead the metal Dünste - Steamy or hazy Ton - Sound or Tone Länge - Length of time or duration Methode - Method Serie - Series, as in items in a group (a book series, for example) - obvious, given her encyclopedic memory and her offer of "privilege." Notice that the way time is marked in the anime is based on Himmel's death (such as "20 years after the Death of Himmel the Hero.") It's not certain if this is universal or how Frieren marks her time. Frieren recently toppled FullMetal Alchemist from the top spot on MyAnimeList (MAL), where it had sat for more than a decade. Both are Shonen manga that start with loss. Both are praised for excellent characterization, complex and nuanced issues, delicate handling of plot, emotional intensity and touching sentimentalism. Lastly, the series is named "Sousou no Frieren." While this has often been translated as "Frieren The Slayer" that is INCORRECT. "Sousou no" is the act of "sending off" as in a funeral. So while the manga title may be translated as "Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead" since that's more literary, the more precise translation is "Frieren the Undertaker." This has more than one meaning, but the two most common interpretations is that we learn that Elves in Frieren are essentially immortal, so Frieren will eventually "send off" all her non-elven friends. The second meaning is to "see someone off" is also a euphemism for killing and is Frieren is first identified by a demon as the titular character in Episode 8.
