I hope she knows we are all still here listening and we are all so thankful for her

It’s fascinating to me that she does something I call “becoming the instrument.” The piano is just a timekeeper, Judy is now the instrument. She is incomparable.

Nobody goes to depths of a song like Judy, as a teen watched every moment of The Judy Garland Show laying on area rug right in front of TV, singing with so much feeling loved her passionately then marvel now at how lasting and timeless her artistry remains, love you forever Judy...

At the peak of her enormous talent, in a gorgeous little black dress designed by Edith Head. Perfection.

When Judy’s contract at MGM was discontinued she lost her starring part in film with this song in it, she closed her first episode of her 1963 variety show with this song and made it her own. Masterclass in song interpretation.

Judy knew what this song was about. It’s too late , I’ve fallen for you . I wouldn’t now move on easily if you didn’t want me . To me when I hear Judy singing this I believe she is thinking of her father, the father that would’ve kept Ethel in check when he died she lost the one person she felt was in her corner. She felt this loss her whole life looking for someone to really be there for her and not what her success would bring them. I think she had so much emotion in thinking of her father that she had to control herself instead conjourning up determination to stay with the emotion. This song flowed from her like a little stream , constant but very present. Judy sang with all of her soul, body , and heart and she allowed nothing to hide behind . Simply sung yet I was stunned to tears as she ends the song with that pause “ how could I ever close the door” the love is etched in stone and cannot be trivial. I don’t want to stereotype but Judy acts. Like a gay man , in her humor, observations, Witt , and expressed emotions. All of the important men in her life were gay - her father , Roger edens who was her vocal coach at mgm, Minnelli, , deans, heron, vast number of male co stars . That’s why gay men respond to her. They reflect each other. But then any human with a heart responds to Judy and you have to be a real bastard to feel nothing as she ends this song . Cottage for sale is a wrist slasher , more than this, one can see the raw beauty of being able as humans to find themselves forever attached to someone because they love them. You don’t need the others permission to fall. For them and no one can take that away.. Even if they leave or pass away., the bond from your end is not broken . This is my favorite song after over the rainbow ( not somewhere over the rainbow) . Only garland can sing it like this. She’s a genius. I can only imagine. How the heads of MGM felt listening to this in 1963. And the creators of this song.

Len, How beautifully you write. I believe that it was Louis Mayer who hired a girl to pretend to be Judy's friend and Judy spilled her heart out to her. The girl in turn went back and told him everything Judy said. Judy's mother was the ultimate narcissistic stage mother. I believe Vicente Minnelli was bisexual but was kind to Judy. Poor Liza Minnelli was also married to either gay or bisexual men such as Peter Allen and I believe one of her other husbands. Liza had neither her mother's looks or incredible talent and that would have been hard on poor Liza.

The very end of this is astonishing...when Judy bows her head down (hands clasped in prayer), she nearly breaks down herself. Beautiful acting through a song. No one did it better. (Five seconds after this clip ends, she's doing a bouncy, smiling "Who Cares?" We all did!!)

The black dress reminds me of her 1962 or 3? appearance on Jack Paar. I recommend this airing especially to people who don't know Judy. In my opinion, she was never in better voice, better shape or funnier. Love this woman.

this is stunning - never seen a performance from her quite like this one...found it quite by accident researching the song. It seems so misplaced from the film Royal Wedding as it is one of those ballads that is so perfect, it has a life all it's own. I am most moved in the very last verse when she is singing a cappella - it was a brilliant way to emphasize the emotion in the song and she just grips you, that ending, raw Judy, real, so amazing

I think in the original intro she mentioned this song was written for her (when she was cast in Royal Wedding - replacing June Allyson, who was pregnant. Judy subsequently left the film and was replaced by Jane Powell).
