I do the exact same thing when warming up! It’s very helpful to actually gently warm up. It makes the process much nicer and I feel like everything is much more “warmed up” when I get to my fundamentals
Practicing on a schedule is doing something that I did when I was younger (early teens into my 40's). I don't do much scheduling on composing because I have done it on inspiration. You are doing great and doing things in your life that are good for you!
Absolutely love your perspective on long tones. They are extremely important and a lot of improvement to my playing has been made through long tones but sometimes it can be difficult to get the motivation to practice knowing I have to get through 10-20 minutes of them before I can get to the stuff I actually want to play. It never even occurred to me that I don't have to do them first thing to get the benefits of them. I'll definitely be experimenting with that! :)
Hi Katie! Really enjoying your recent vlogs, thank you for sharing snippets of your flutelyfe with us. As a fellow flute teacher, I would love to hear your thoughts or ideas about how to effectively teach vibrato. It's always been a tricky one for me as someone who didn't "learn" it through any particular strategy as a kid! (have a happy new year! From Melbourne, Australia 😊)
I feel you on the long tone thing. I combine scales with long tones, so I do scalar 9ths, and focus on moving the air through all the registers evenly, evening out the breaks, and not rushing. I find my breath support is really great when I've worked through those.
Very happy to hear about your recording .. will you make it available for purchase, is that your intention? I would love to support your efforts! I was involved with producing a CD for someone, I tell you it was just so much fun making music!!! I really loved that part of it. Wishing you much success! This was fun to watch 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Hmmm...Now you sound a little bit like ME!! You (and Santi) have aged out of some things you were doing before,...and now you're (together) doing formal recording projects partly as motivation to continue making progress. All of that sounds like what I'm doing on my channel with my music projects. You touched on something interesting, in the recording studio, the perfectionist conundrum. Just yesterday I watched a concert pianist whom I follow vlogging her recording session with some label, where the sound guy kept saying "These few notes in bar X weren't clear," and she would record a patch for each spot. In a way you've answered the question I asked her, about the pressure to perfect everything, versus the desire for a spontaneous live performance sound, mistakes and all. In my stuff, I like to keep the feeling of what happened "in the moment", including the occasional wrong note. Great continued vlogging btw!!

Every time!!!! Your intonation blows my mind. That Prokofiev rehearsal is so amazing 👏
So inspiring 😊. I haven’t had my flute out in a very long time. Think I’ll get it out tonight and play some scales 🥰❤️

I had asked about warm ups. Thanks for including it. I think I’ll try a bit of noodling and light music before I hit the fundamentals.
