Let's also honor the creator and innovator of this wonderful piece of music..AHMAD JAMAL...As of this writing he is 92 years old. This peice is called "Swahili-land" and he released it in 1974. Please pray for him, he is truly a musical treasure.
Indeed he is and criminally underrated
Respect
#AhmadJamal4Eva
Q-Tip observed many years ago that MCs do the same thing, lyrically, that jazz musicians do melodically. Love and appreciation to jazz MASTERS like Bro. Ahmad Jamal for laying down the REAL blueprint. Many of us Tru headz love Hip Hop and straight ahead jazz too.
Unfortunately he is now moved on from this mortal plane. S.I.P Good Sir 🙏🏾 💐 ✊🏾
That part where Ma Dukes was looking at the chair like she was telling J Dilla "Im proud of you son, you made this possible" that was deep. What a wonderful performance.
Facts!
Literally tears me up! So beautiful to see
Brought tears to my eyes.
Yeah man I tear up everytime.... 🙏🏼
Tears of joy 🙏 amazing!
R.I.P., Trugoy the Dove.🥀✌🏾♥️
Man I got the chills once the beat dropped
word
Me too the hairs on my arms LITERALLY STOOD UP!!!
Awww man , this part man 6:14 , so heart touching.
🙏🏽🕊🖤 Rest Up Dilla👽🍰
I didn't know it was possible to love Stakes is High more, until know!
Natalie B i do every time.
Agreed!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played this song.. It puts me into an amazing mood.. “Love vibrations”... I’ve created so many art pieces while playing this high vibrational collaboration.. Much much love 💕

That part💯
I'm 57 years old, De La Soul is Top 5 for me. I recently said I can't imagine going to another hip hop show...I stand corrected if I could find this type of show I'm going to be right there.
Ma Dukes should be proud. Her son inspired three generations of producers.
Perzon wordd
This one is timeless. Imagine someone listening to this in 3000. Love ...Vibration.

The orchestration was tight and the drummer is a beast!!!
Karriem Riggins on the drums!
@@clappedoutmotor Detroit's Own
Thundercat is on the bass too check him out if you don’t know him
@@skibooski6884 oh shit! That is amazing
@@jorggggggg legendary lineup
Bless the conductor for arranging it all and that drummer murdered that beat 👌 Rip Dilla💓
Just coming across this, what an amazing live performance. RIP to Jay Dee & Trugoy 🕊️🕯️
after seeing this, i keep faith about how our humanity can create wonderful things. Thank you !
If you don't get goosebumps then something is wrong with you. J-Dilla didn't just change my life. He changed the world 🌎
Nearly 2 decades in, stakes is hign is still keeping me alive.
6:13 to 6:23 brought a tear to my eye.... may not be what it is, but seemed as tho Ma Dukes was lookin at the chair where her son was supposed to be.... R.I.P. J DIL
She seems to have a focus on the chair for more than those 10s if you look before... A deep focus. But definitely stealing some tears from our eyes. definitely.
i feel ya. tears were flow'n
I actually want to cry
I do every time i watch this...
Louis Bynoe go ahead ...
Don't Cry
I did
Did
J Dilla produced one of the most classic beats....R.I.P.
6:15 is definitely a major tearjerker. You ain't a real Dilla head if you ain't cried at 6:13
When I 1st played the DVD some time ago it killed me. Still does.
Shay that's unfair to the dilla fans that feel it inside
doesnt get any easier everytime i watch it, that empty seat is too much.
I cried. The parent should never have to bury the child, especially one was gifted as him.
this made me cry
Also don't forget the genius of Ahmad Jamal
Have you heard about the cover band out of Europe, Ahmad?
this arrangement is EVERYTHING to me. so full of love and peace.
I agree
Absolutely
Still makes me so emotional
Leaving the open seat with the Cello for Dilla was amazing. He grew up on that instrument and a ear for music. One day people will realise what real music is too much materialism and greed but the world will reap what it's sown Realist lyrics.
The drummer and whoever is on they bass is killin it at the end
karriem riggins on drums
@@bevboyz Nice 👍🏾
Who is playing electric bass on this concert is just Thundercat
I love J Dilla. Peace to all his family. Dilla was beyond official. Ma Dukes u the best.
Ear candy for the soul! God bless JDilla, DeLa, Talib and Robert Glasper!
RIP Dilla and Dove
If you think the offbeat grooves are less than flowing... you should get a Thelonius Monk primer. This is superb shit... best take the ride, "Stakes is High"!!!
I cried watching this... so powerful!
2B87 I did the same thing. tears just flowing. it embodies so many emotions. from the meaning of the song's relevance to the absence of dilla.
REAL HIP-HOP REAL TALENT REAL BARS REAL LYRICS A REAL MESSAGE 💯
the conductor dude is the one 1:11
@J A he’s mixed 😭
Love his passion for the music...
They made this rendition a classic in itself.....awesome!.....Rest In Paradise J. Dilla, your legacy and love of music lives on!
Such a powerful moment when Pos enters with his classic lyrics. Legendary. Only if Dave could've been there too... (health problems at the time?)
But Kweli is great, and they sound great together. Is Karriem sleeping a little at 1:00?? Probably mesmerized by the music...
This would be something else to see live!!!
im so glad i bought the actual copy of this whole event. makes me cry every time. RIP J DILLA you were so great we miss you JD.
Fuck where have I been all this time? This is way too dope!
I swear I said the same thing. I feel like I walked past $100.00 on the street.
Excellent way of putting it! I first heard this on the Gilles Peterson show- such a beautiful, beautiful song:). I still listen to the original of course- but this is bliss!
BLISS! Yes! I just close my eyes and float...
I am ashamed to be discovering this in "22"
I haven't felt goosebumps like this since the first tribute I heard to Dilla. My neck is tweaked from nodding too hard at this
Words cant describe how beautiful this sounds. The conductor and drummer held that pocket tight!!
Man, this is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❣️
I love this music! Thanks for everything Jamal and Trugoy; your legacies and talents will live on 💙
Dope Dilla face sticker on my back windshield rollin' around Detroit showing respect like I'm spose to. Dilla will always be our Hometown Hero! Rest In Beats
only a group as great as De La Soul can bring Mama Cass back from the dead...i see u.
My feelings about this thing will never get cold, cause for me, it's absolutely perfect. And the moment, when Ma Dukes is looking at the chair with cello!!! So strong, so deep, almost to cry.. Dilla forever!
so much history to unpack in this one video this is biblical i see peanut butter wolf in the back who else is there
is that uhh j rawls in the back to?
All Love to Ma Dukes for producing a Great Producer !!!
I'm an atheist and this was pure church
My most favorite hip hop composition of all time! r.i.p. J Dilla & Trugoy aka Dave
YOOOOOOOOOOO I see my nigga DJ HOUSESHOES up there on stage with LEGEND "PLUG-ONE"!
Sometimes an angel visits us and brings some joy and happyness..
As I am now 50yrs old I could really appreciate this especially if as fan since back in da dayz when folks thought our music was trash & now those same negatives they all now totally get it..👍🏽
Rip plug 2
sounds so good I could almost cry!!!!
wow
that was life changing
Miguel Atwood Ferguson with that fire arrangement
not the first time hip hop has brought a tear to my eye .. peace
First of All Stakes is my fav De La album! This shit is beautiful!
Dion Parker whenever I have misic talks with my brother, I always somehow mention how "Stakes Is High", is the "Midnight Marauders" of De La albums.
(Midnight being my favorite overall album of all time)
Everytime I watch this, and other clips from this night, I just think to my myself, this must have been such an emotional night....
A producer who can make you feel so many emotions just off the beat alone is simply amazing. This isnt just music, its an experience. J Dilla's legacy will forever live on. R.I.P. Jay Dee
Cool to see Talib Kweli on this live since he wasn't in the original video. Peace and love to all conscious thinkers!
Wow, this just takes me back. It's almost like I can remember everything I was doing during that exact time I heard the original version. Dilla lives on forever through us, don't ever let it go.
Man I miss Dilla. Dilla is da GOD of music. His sound is da soundtrack of my life
10 years later and it's still so beautiful...
Now this is real music right here
Stakes is High-MASTERPIECE
MA DUKES !!!!! What up doe?? This is beautiful- salutes and mad love
Goosebumps everywhere-amazing performance and I never heard this before, org only .
In tears
Mad goosebumps from this shit. Rest up James. You are and always will be, the best to ever do it.
this shit absolutely destroys me.
Once I got this privilege to hugg Pos after De La gig in the Spirit club of Dublin, and it was electrifying. Like he gave me some energy boost, these guys are special.
I never thought this song could get any better
The Instrumental is so very beautiful ❤️
To make sure that you have clarity
The Instrumental is soothingly beautiful.
People get really iffy about the whole sampling thing, and how it's not musicianship. Sure if you loop a 20000 bar song and call it yours then yeah.
Dilla has made music pieces with old songs, popular or not, and we have bunch of people doing covers of a song that was sampled imo is mind boggling.
Remember the pete rock and dj premier covers done by jazz bands? that was nuts.
It's crazy that Ahmad Jamal is still alive too
People that question the validity of sampling don't understand art and it's manifestations in the modern world.
R.I.P., J. Dilla.🫡🥀♥️
All the comments are positive energy that will grab other humans souls!
always been one of my fav De La tracks
Seeing MaDukes I lost it
Absolutely Golden...
this is AMAZING! long live the DILLA the undisputed KING OF BEATS...
Real Music Right Here,so beautiful to see that is still happening
Some lucky human beings that sat audience to this tribute.
R.I.P. will truly be missed.
So many years later and this still brings tears to my eyes. I remember I used to listen to this while I was still in high school, now I’m in my 30s, and imma still bop this in my 60s and 90s
that intro brought chills
Tears in my eyes
dJ House Shoes, Dwele, Bilal, Miss Jack Davey? Dopeness! That stage was historic!
Had to cop this DVD
Vernell Thomas Where?
@@habs4life13 It was at HMV 10 years ago... That's in the UK. I have no idea about today, BUT DO.
Stakes is High best damn version OMG...Literally couldnt sit still....and ma Dukes...wow...
Hell yes! This is so beautiful! Damn I'd love to smoke a chronic bowl and just let the beats vibrate around me and become one with them (vibrations). Let it resonate with my soul's frequency.
Awesome music and rap never dies.
absolutely beautiful
Even when you orchestrate it, Dilla still breaks necks. RIP Dilla
I cried listening to the first few minutes. I love me some Talib but the music…my gaad.
RIP Dave and J Dilla!!😢
The chillz! 🥶🙏 Dilla 4Life!!!
Love that his mum is up on the stage singing to 😁 ❤️
This is the song that made me realize hip hop was more than rap
This is beautiful.
Still listening in 2020. J Dilla in our hearts forever.
gracias jay dilla!!!
