The line(s) from Barnard Castle were uplifted very quick , complete sections on one line using a shunting engine & bogie wagons. Then using a Drott to lift the other line - sleepers were knocked off with sledge hammers. The shunter broke down near Cockfield Fell Station, the men were very secretive about the viaduct arrangements (we used to roll stones at side of the low-line to The Slack to catch slow worms , was there the evening before the viaduct was dropped). Made my final inspection through the trap-door down to the lower walk-level , still amazed , the thermal expansion taper joints for rails must have been 2 to 3 foot long.Making a educated guess (educated top-of-town County School) , I stole the next day off school & made it only just in time. The technique , what I know now to be 'thermal lances' used at both ends to cut through the steelwork + I think a explosive charge must have been blown at the brick pier that is now laid in bits , down she came , something I will never forget. Then the burner squad got busy for days cutting up the steel & loading on rail wagons & it was removed on the low-line. The embankment had been a great place for brambles & rose-hip collecting (IIRC 10 shillings for a long hessian sack full delivered to school). Soon fencing was ripped down for firewood & the sheep got on the line , the unique non-fell vegetation was lost as well as the fantastic sound of a train going across the viaduct. This was abt. circa 1962.
