  • Took a hike up to Owl's Head in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this weekend. This mountain is the most remote of the NH 48 4ks at around an 18.5 mile hike. The trail itself is pretty easy going with the exception of 4 major water crossings. These crossings can be pretty dangerous depending on what time of year you go and how the weather has been. We lucked out with easy crossings. The last mile of the hike goes up a rock slide and is an adventure for sure.
    Overall it was a great hike with lots of nice woods walking. Not sure I would go out of my way to do it again but definitely don't regret doing it at least once!

    What sort of goof would give this video a thumbs-down?
    I was tickled to see an Owl's Head video here. I would dispute your assertion that it's the most remote of the 48 (now 47 since the demotion of Tecumseh, and hopefully 46 when they re-survey Isolation). My candidate for most remote is, not coincidentally, Mt. Isolation, with its 12-mile-from-any-direction swampy approach to a wooded summit. It's exactly why I never bagged it. Now I'm too old.
    I've climbed Owl's head at least 3 times, and loved it. When I last saw the slide, it was relatively new as a geomorphological feature and therefore wide open, maybe 10 - 15 yards wide, no trees. We would glissade down it (did that on the Flume Slide too - a real gas). It looks really overgrown now, which is great, I guess, for erosion.
    In my day, about 2/3 of the way up the slide, someone painted a little sign on a rock that said "Water," with a left-pointing arrow. Off to the left, right at the edge of the slide boundary, was a cleft in the rock, like the inside corner of a big cardboard box. In that corner was a little spring which issued from the base of the cleft like a drinking fountain - a little water arc about 8 inches high. You practically had to stand on your head to get in for a drink, but man was that sweet. I wonder if it's still there. It's the very definition of the word artesian, and I would submit that it was seasonal.
    We would stay at the Franconia Brook shelter (long gone I guess), bag Owl's head, another night at Franconia brook, then head up toward
    the Garfield Ridge Shelter for a night (used to be on the west side of garfield), then run the Franconia Ridge to Liberty Springs and down the Flume Slide and out. Not exactly a loop, but with a little hitchhiking, you could get back to the car. Long swim at 13 Falls.
    I'm actually sort of gratified that even after all these years, the trail is still unofficial and "unmaintained"".
    C'mon now, let's knock 6 feet offa Isolation and I can die a happy man. No rush. I'll wait. Erosion will do it if not a survey.
    Last time I climbed Owl's head was in 1966. I spent a week in the Pemi with my life-long friend and climbing buddy, and we saw a total of 4 people between Greenflea and the Crawford House. Those truly WERE the days.
    Videos like yours allow me to go places I've been, that I dearly love, and know I'll never see again. I'm grateful for that. I have a 10-foot 4K projection system, so it's very much like being there. Very realistic, enough so that I might suggest some deodorant.
    Thanks and keep 'em coming.

    I never did get to check off Owls Head. So, thanks for the painless experience as I view this from my recliner 😜. I did climb Bondcliff, Mt. Bond, Mt. Guyot, and Zealand Mtn. thru to Zealand falls and finally Hale Mtn. That was more than 40 yrs ago. The time of my life! Thanks for well done videos and I really enjoy your taste in background music.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Scott. The bondcliff area is great and with its relative remoteness we saw 2 other people the time we were over there. Owl's head gets a bad rap but its easy hiking up until the slide (assuming the water crossings are tame). I actually enjoyed it

  • @glorgau

    Nice, that was the last one of the 48 that I did. The rock slide is definitely a "pick your way through" trail. I have run into multiple people that have done it in one day, but at 60 years old and 3 knee operations, with my dog, thats was definitely an overnighter for me ;-) I've actually hiked the loop a couple of times for fun.

    Video quality is fantastic, you really have learned to shoot and edit well. I don’t recall you eating Mountain House or freeze dried for that matter on the AT? I got away from those meals, my most recent meal is a Chipotle burrito. I freeze them and they thaw by the end of a long day. I keep them in foil then a ziplock, then boil them in my MSR WindBurner stove. You have to flip them because they are to big to fully submerge, takes some skill. I practiced all winter and my wife though I was crazy but I you there’s nothing like a big old Chipotle burrito in the wild after a long hike! Enjoy!

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  6 лет назад

      Thanks Ted! Ya I didn't really do many mountain House on the AT. Only the first week and then occasionally in a resupply box. Too expensive for the thru hiker. I just recently got a 12 pack mix for $4.50 each so I think it's a decent price then. Most on trail are like $9-11. No way! Haha would love to pack out some burrito action. It does sound like quiet the show to put it together tho!

    Nice video. Owls Head is on my list so I am starting to plan. I am curious why you lugged your packs up to the top. I am thinking I am going to hang my food and stash my pack in the woods near the bottom. I'm also thinking I will do the loop by 13 Falls. Anyways, I enjoyed the video and have subscribed, so I am looking forward to some of your other videos.

      Its just a personal thing of mine. I prefer to have the pack with me at all times. There was actually a stack of about 4 packs right at the bottom. There was a pretty large amount of camping options the way we came through. I really enjoyed doing it as an overnight. Thanks for watching Lawrence! Enjoy the hike!

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors

      They are Patagonia baggies. They are pretty damn nice. They dry really quick and have very deep pockets. They come with a liner in them that I'm not a fan of so I chopped that out. I have another pair of Columbia shorts I like too. Not sure what type those are tho

    Great hike! I am curious how is “the two” working out for you? I know you did an earlier review, any new perspectives now that you got it out on the trail? How does it compare to your experience with zpacks tents?

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  6 лет назад

      The Two worked great that night. I will have to have it out again a lot more and in bad weather before I can really speak about it. I have a few things I am kind of "meh" about with it. One of them is the size. Like its great that its roomy and what not but as far as stealth camping in the Whites (which is super dense forest) its really tricky to find a spot that it will actually fit in. Most people will love the room it gives though I am just talking specifically where I camp in can be problematic finding a spot for a tent this size. One of my more major gripes is with the toggle system used to roll up the doors. I think the toggle is placed too far down the tent. Whenever you roll the door up and toggle it open part of it just falls out. I thought I may have been an idiot but had the gf try as well and seemed to have the same issue. Will try to keep giving it some test runs when I can though. Those are pretty minor gripes.

      Ya it's very smooth for most of the hike! The slide is an adventure. Doable by most i would say. Just take your time of course. I will not be doing the long trail. Look at you go Mr I’m in no hurry to finish the list, haha. You only have one left correct? What is it again?? Owls Head was number 46 for me. The monotony of the Lincoln Woods 🙄 blah for sure man. With the entertainment of the water crossings and the slide all and all I liked that hike much more than I had expected. The video was perfectly done 👌 I’m actually heading to the Whites this weekend with my wife, sister in law and her best friend. We are going to do a one nighter hitting Zealand and Bonds. Very nice video. I had done this trip back in October of 2000 with no issues. I tried the same trip yesterday May 30th and this water was very high and we had to turn around at about the 6 or 7 mile mark as the little stream crossing you showed was raging, it was more like a river. What I learned is if the water is raging at the first bridge crossing its probably a no go. I will try again later this year as I am doing all of the 4,000 footer with my 16 year old daughter and she has not done it. Also I read that what we thought was the summit is in fact not the true summit, I am not sure on that one. Just wondering why you hiked to the summit with your fully loaded pack? Again you did a great job with your video, I subscribed, thanks.

      For one or two tents it's pretty easy to find spots. Not sure how well will work with a big group though. Hammocks you'll post up anywhere haha

    Enjoyed this video, too me the forest in close like that and no grand vistas is my solitude. But I do like the BIG views. Why was she so quiet 🤫

      She doesn't really like to chat on camera much. I've always told her chat away but I think it's one of those "I think I sound weird on camera" situations. Ya nothing wrong with some good ole solitude!

    Ever think about ditching that belt?

      The pack actually carries pretty well without it. If I didn't carry all the additional camera gear with me I wouldn't even question ditching it. The camera gear I bring is probably pushing around 4-5lbs. Nice to have the option in this case especially if loaded up with water too.
