  • Sir Andy Haines, winner of the 2022 Tyler Prize, defines Planetary Health and how it differs from traditional 'Public health':
Public health has traditionally focused on the health of the population. So it's looked at ways of increasing the health of the population, often reducing inequities in health, but it hasn't really looked at the environmental foundations of that health. So it hasn't looked to what extent by improving our health, we're actually undermining the prospects for health, for people living in other parts of the world today, or future generations. Planetary Health seeks to put that by looking at in a much more comprehensive and integrated way about how human health depends on the integrity of natural systems and how we have to protect those natural systems, if we're going to sustain health into the future.
