  • Comeback Queen? Abby Lee Miller's Shocking Plans After Dance Moms
"Dance Moms," a reality TV show and dance competition series on Lifetime, was known for its talented young dancers and the character of Abby Lee Miller. Miller's high standards and harsh critiques often led to conflict with the children under her tutelage. On May 1, Lifetime aired a reunion special featuring former cast members discussing their experiences in Miller's dance studio. Miller has remained controversial since the show's eighth season in 2019, with some former dancers praising her tough love and others still healing from criticism.
Miller's rise to fame on the show was not without controversy, as her unorthodox, explosive, and no-nonsense attitude often led to emotional outbursts, tears, and heartache. This intense environment even led to some young dancers quitting the company. In 2020, Miller was accused of racism by former "Dance Moms" mother Adriana Smith, who pulled her daughter Kamryn out of the show following racially charged comments from Miller. Miller responded on Instagram, saying she genuinely understands and deeply regrets how her words have effected and hurt those around her in the past, particularly those in the Black community.
Lifetime announced they would not air one of their "Dance Moms" spinoffs, "Abby's Virtual Dance-Off." One notable moment on the show occurred during a competition in November 2013, when an altercation between Miller and Kelly Hyland resulted in an altercation that escalated into a public screaming match. Both Kelly Hyland and Miller took legal action against each other, with Miller alleged assault and Kelly sued for defamation and emotional distress. Both cases were eventually dismissed.
Miller continued to face legal issues, including charges of hiding over $750,000 in a secret bank account and 20 counts of bankruptcy fraud in 2015. She initially claimed innocence but ultimately pleaded guilty to concealing income she had earned after filing for bankruptcy. She served eight months in prison before leaving prison in May 2018 and moving to a private residence.
