It's kinda funny that in the 90s studios went out of there way to make things more realistic and less cartoony because of budget instead of just making an animated movie. It's the same think that happened to tank girl

Not so much "realistic" but more just the fact they wanted it DARK and GRITTY. The directors of the movie even took inspiration from Batman '89 and TMNT. But Mario just doesn't work as a gritty, somewhat violent cyberpunk movie. Who looks at the game's art style and thinks "Hmm. It needs more of Tim Burton's Batman and the turtles swearing." Unlike those films which took themes from their original darker comics, Mario was never that to begin with. And this came out before all remakes and reboots had to be both gritty AND realistic post Nolan's Batman in the 2010s.

True it is more in line with the games, but if I were in charge of that script, I would've made Mario more likable as honestly Mario was an insufferable dickbag in the original draft. Like he could still be a cynical middle age boomer, but have him still treat Luigi as a brother and not as a verbal whipping boy. It's fascinating to me how Draft 1 Mario and Luigi's characterizations are reversed from the 1986 Mario anime film. In that, Mario's the daydreamer who wants to save the princess, while Luigi's the greedy one only in it for the money.
14:27 Also, it's funny how you bring up the risqueness of Draft 2, considering the final draft still proved risque enough that Disney (who distributed the film under Buena Vista) took issue with it. Disney originally wanted to promote the film by having the Mario characters be walk-arounds at the parks. But after Disney saw that the final film was hiring actual strippers for the Boom Boom Bar scene (strippers who kept stripping on set despite being told numerous times to stop), Disney backed down on doing walk-arounds. Something about Mario adaptations for TV and film I find interesting is that they all contradict the info the games themselves provide about Mario's history. In this film, as well as the DIC Mario cartoons, the Illumination film, and even the 1986 japanese anime movie, the very first animated adaption of Mario, it's said that Mario and Luigi used to live in the 'real world' before finding a magic warp zone and being sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom. However in the games, most notably the Yoshi's Island series, Mario and Luigi are shown as infants who were born in, what we can assume to be the world of the Mushroom Kingdom. Furthermore, in Mario Odyssey New Donk City is strongly implied to be where the original Donkey Kong took place, what with the numerous red girders, Pauline as mayor, the Festival being one giant love letter to the game, and the numerous references to DK characters scattered through the city, including Diddy and K. Rool. So were they born in The Mushroom Kingdom then got sent to the real world after the events of Donkey Kong somehow before coming back to deal with Bowser in SMB?
I just think this is fascinating.

@@hugocastilla3102 But even after, I think. With New Donk City, people started to realize "we lived a lie all this time" and I think we still do, since Nintendo states NDC was the place were the original Donkey Kong took place, but stuff like Donkey Kong Land confirms it took place on DK Isle (New Ape City is confirmed by Cranky to be the place where he fought Mario and in DKCR has the 25m levels in the background of the Factory, an abandoned construction site [MMMM...]), then during Donkey Kong Jr., Mario cages DK, flies to his "hideout" oversea were NDC presumably is.
My theory is... Mario and Luigi are delivered in the Mushroom Kingdom and there they stay for some years, then they move to the city (Big City from DK94, which more likely is gonna be renamed New Donk City, or was already named like that and Big City is just a nickname), they try to "colonize" DK Isle without success, the Kongs are brought to Big City where later the DK94 events takes place, while in the meantime, Mario and Luigi returns to the Mushroom Kingdom where SMB's events are taking place.

I personally like the first draft the most, even with its flaws. It’s simple, but very effective in being an adaptation of Mario. If they tweaked a few things around (like giving Hildy a bit more to do, such as trying to escape a few times, but be thwarted every time, or making Mario less of a jerk), this could be seen nowadays as being like the original Kombat movie, or the Sonic and Mario OVAs; something that takes a couple of liberties with the source material, but still adapts the story in a fun way while also giving some nods to the games and is considered a cult classic. Heck, it could’ve even been a live-action/animation hybrid, with the stuff in Brooklyn taking place in live-action, while the stuff with the Mushroom Kingdom takes place in animation. I also think the Illumination movie could’ve been a bit better if they took a few cues from this script.
Though, I also agree that the second draft has a lot of fun stuff in it, and if it was mixed with some of the later drafts and refined the story more, it might still be a cult classic like the final product, but in a way something like the original Street Fighter movie is because it differs greatly from the source material, with a few exceptions, but can still be a fun time to enjoy with friends.
Overall, it’s a shame the 1993 movie went the way it did, because even the earliest drafts and the anime OVA showed that you could make a movie about Mario. You just need to keep things focused and build off the games.

I can imagine Jim Henson’s Creature Shop involved with the first draft (the fantasy script written by Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker), with Junior, Toad, Koopa Troopas, Goombas, Thrwomps, Piranha Plants, Beedleman MagiKoopa and maybe King Koopa being animatronics and puppets.
It could be one of this live-action fantasy movies from that time, like The Wizard of Oz (1939), Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, Willow, The Dark Crystal and A NeverEnding Story, but with a slapstick comedy similar to 1994’s The Flintstones making jokes with fairlytales’ cliches, just like Princess Bride and Shrek.
Mario, Woltan, Big Eddie, Luigi and Princess Hildy would be played by real-life actors while the other characters would be puppets made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Mushroom Kingdom would have the same aesthetic from Willy Wonka and The Chocoate Factory, The Wizard of Oz, Tim Burton’s Alice and A NeverEnding Story.

Given that this was such a long, long time ago (and Bob Hoskins' wished it was in a galaxy far, far away) I'd forgotten most, if not all, of it. I never played the games, I only had a Speccy back then (not helping your age perception here Inferis!), so I really didn't get the film at all. Mario and Luigi are brothers in the 93 movie. It always annoys me how many people make this dumb ass joke, which originated from the Nostalga Critic. In the movie Luigi says Mario brought him up, Mario was his Mother his father and his brother his whole life. That doesn’t mean he’s Mario son like si many people misunderstand. It means Mario and Luigi were orphan children on the streets of Brooklyn and Mario the older brother stepped up to raise his younger brother me. This happens often and was especially common In the 70’s 80’s and especially the 90’s, especially for Italian families and Spanish Families. My mother dropped out of school to help her mother raise her brother and sister. I have family friends who raised their younger siblings after their parents were arrested, killed or just abandoned them. I have a friend I grew up with who emancipated herself at 16 worked three jobs and raised her younger brother and cousins after her parents and uncle were killed. She had to fight to get custody of her brother and cousin but she did it. Mario and Luigi are actually brothers in the 93 film, Mario just also acted as a perental figure to Luigi because they were left to fend for themselves. Why do people always misunderstand this. I believe it comes from the Nostalgia Critic or the fact that people either don’t listen to Luigi in the dinner scene or that they can’t seem to comprehend that not everyone had a traditional upbringing with loving parents. Some people lost their parents at a young age for whatever reasons and had to raise themselves and in some cases their younger siblings as well. This still happens today, it’s not even that uncommon. It was especially common in the 70’s and 80’s but also in the 90’s and early 2000’s.
People shit on this movie a lot, and yes I know the story that lead to its creation, but any kid who actually grew up watching this will tell you that this movie was best. It was weird it was different but it was still the Mario brothers. And anyone who says otherwise either didn’t grow up watching this movie or is to afraid praise a movie the internet says is bad. This movie is what happens when you take the game and take it as literally as you can. While also trying to come up with reasons to explain the silliness of the very few games and very limited backstory that we had. The movie actually tried and succeeded in covering and referencing as much of the games at the time. It libraries with alot of things that’s for sure, but it doesn’t change the fact that this movie was a great cyberpunk, Dinopunk, And Fungus-punk film. That was a blast to watch, especially at the time. Did it bomb, yeah but not because kids hated it. It bombed because critics hated it and parents listened to the critics. Just like Batman Returns, do you really believe that kids hated that movie. They may have been spooked by it, but every kid who watched it loved it. The ones who said otherwise were just repeating what their parents and the media told them to say. Like that kid who said Batman Returns was not suitable for kids, he didn’t think that, that’s what his mother and the show host told him to say. If the Super Mario Bros movie was named anything else there wouldn’t be as much hate for it now. It would have been forgotten about until nerds on the internet remember it and started talking about. They would have praised it for being uniquely different and for the creativity of the set’s world props and story. Really it no different then the hundreds of other forgotten 80’s and 90’s cult films that are remembered fondly today.
