- We are delighted to have Dr. Josh Schammel back with us. Dr. Josh Schammel is a fourth-year urology resident at Albany Medical Center specializing in infertility, sexual medicine, and andrology. He will be joining us today to discuss testosterone levels and who may benefit from testosterone treatment.
Testosterone is often called the "male hormone" for a reason-it plays a crucial role in overall health, sexual function, and well-being. Produced primarily in the testicles, testosterone is responsible for puberty changes, maintaining energy, muscle growth, libido, and even mental health.
As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline, with about 10-40% of men over 40 experiencing symptoms of low testosterone (low T). These symptoms include fatigue, reduced sex drive, mood swings, loss of muscle mass, weight gain, and even fertility issues. Factors like stress, obesity, poor diet, drug use, and exposure to environmental toxins such as microplastics can also contribute to low T levels.
When diagnosing low testosterone, doctors measure two types of testosterone: total testosterone, which reflects overall production, and free testosterone, the active hormone available for the body to use. The American Urological Association considers a total testosterone level below 300 ng/dL as low. Understanding testosterone's impact is vital as it affects not only physical health but mental well-being. If you’re experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, consulting a healthcare provider can help uncover potential causes and determine the best course of action.
