Great video. Went with the canyon at4. Cost a little more than the trail boss but came with comforts on the interior and a better exterior look. Enjoy it asides from the manufacturer issues that it came with. Front alignment was off and pulling to the right and the steering wheel alignment was off and to the left about 10.5 o’clock. Rides great, like the features. Also, have to get a new HVAC head unit “ underneath the infotainment system” because all the lights stopped working and and no temp display on the dual zone adjusters. First GMC truck and GM vehicle since 2011. Not impressed based on the initial issues but have big hopes and love what they’ve changed. Hope the best for y’all and thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching and congrats on your truck. I liked the amenities in the Canyon but really wanted the front locker. The AT4X was a little too steep on the price tag so I ended up going ZR2. I also wasn't a huge fan of the partially white interior since I know it will get filthy with our lifestyle.
Thanks for posting. The exact color and options I'm looking for but holding off for another model year for GM to fix any bugs/issues that normally pop up during a new model launch.
Thanks for watching! I contemplated waiting until next year for the same reason but then got worried that they will just raise prices again. I figure it has a warranty and this motor has been around for a bit so it was worth a try. Stay tuned for my next video about an issue we are already having. I briefly talked about it in this video too.
@@DrifterJourney Yeah I was a bit concerned then I watched some videos on this motor and it's actually been extensively torture tested beyond what anyone will do in a normal engine's lifetime. It passed all the torture testing with flying colors and has also been in hundreds of thousands of Silverado trucks for the past half decade with no issues. My Chevy dealer guy said they'd likely raise prices next year (sales pitch maybe) so I ordered one in the same desert sand color. It's supposed to finally be here next month.. hopefully they fixed any of the little annoying bugs during these extra months I had to wait lol
@joalyincontroly4379 awesome and congratulations! I'm sure more of the kinks will continue to get worked out as they learn about them. Hopefully it comes on time to what you expect.
@2011buddylee I also saw that video and was tempted. I'll probably wait until I crush the current tailpipe before I do anything. Hopefully that won't be an issue though.
Love the color! I've had my glacier blue zr2 for 2 weeks now and have just over 600 miles on it. I love it. I am averaging 19.5 mpg city and highway mixed.
Thanks! I wasn't sure about the color being sight unseen but am definitely happy with it. I'm excited to start seeing more on the road to see how good they all look. That's great to hear that you got one! Hopefully it wasn't too much of a pain. Also great news in the MPG situation. Where are you located? We're hoping it keeps going up with more normal driving but time will tell.
If the flares are like the 2022, I recommend getting some mudflaps for it immediately if you cherish your paint, or dont like mud up under your door habdles.
Thanks for the suggestion. The flares are pretty wide but I'll keep an eye on things! This will be our adventure rig so scratches are inevitable but we try to avoid them as long as possible.
@@DrifterJourney No problem. I'm currently sitting at the dealers now waiting for them to diagnose an issue with me not being able to turn the truck completely off, leaving the key stuck in the ignition.
Thanks for watching! I guess I'll just be angry and deal with it. On a positive note, we drive a lot less that we used to and the truck is still beating our previous vans that average 15mpg overall. Worst case scenario........we'll start using our 90's Geo Tracker and TW200 as our daily drivers. They get 30mpg and 50mpg.
You can turn off the seat belt requirement to shift into drive in the settings. A Go Fast Camper will likely be your best bet for a light weight camper imo.
Thanks! We found the option to turn it off. We looked at GFC but are probably going to go the OVRLND or Oru route because of the pass through space between the truck bed and camper section.
So what did you pay OTD price ? I tried to order a 2023 ZR2, it never came. But watching the reviews , I’m glad i didn’t get it. I ended up buying a 2023 Ford ranger lariat tremor. OTD $51k. Great truck. Has the electric folding mirrors , better gas mileage, fold down rear seat , leather heated seats , premium stereo system , built in garage door opener, fox shocks, front skid plate , tow package, higher tow and payload than the ZR2 , adaptive cruise control, 6 auxiliary switches for lights , winch etc. steel drive shaft. The Colorado’s are notorious for breaking the aluminum drive shaft.
Thanks for watching! The truck sticker was $52,235. The dealer had an $800 dealer fee and then taxes (different for everyone). So it was $53k plus tax. I looked really closely at the Ranger but ultimately chose the ZR2 for it's offroad capability (I think it will be better than the Ranger). We like the rock sliders along with the front and rear lockers that nobody else is doing. This one had $1000 added for a sunroof, $950 for adaptive cruise and fancy cameras, and $500 for the Bose audio system. I probably would have saved the $2500 and skipped those if I had done a special order, but I'm happy with all of it. And boy does it do great with the fancy shocks on gravel roads. They are both great trucks and I can't wait to see videos coming out with them on trails side by side.
Thanks for watching! Or at least reading the comments. I was really liking the look of some of the Rangers I was seeing but personally found the ZR2 to be a better option for our goals.
1) There is no way to manually turn on or off the headlights or the door locks. So if the battery dies, the hood is locked, how do you open the door locks, so you can open the hood, so you can charge the battery? 2)The V-6 and the Duramax Diesel that were available in the previous Colorado are no longer offered in 2023. Which engine is more likely to run over 250,000 miles the 4-cylinder or the Duramax Diesel?
Thanks for watching! I'll try to answer your questions. 1. There is a key in the FOB to open and close the doors if needed. The hood should still pop if the battery is dead. The headlights have to be turned off through the infotainment screen. 2. I'd say most folks would tell you the diesel will run longer. I had a diesel previously (Jeep) and it gave me nothing but problems. We also travel to Baja quite often and have heard of some issues with diesel down there.....and it's harder to come by. The initial upcharge for a diesel motor, the issues I had previously, and finding good diesel mechanics are all reasons that I stuck with the new gasser.
Thanks for watching! Are you talking surf touch where your legs hit? If so, that would be amazing. It hasn't been an issue but I thought about that when we got it.
I’m looking into the ZR2 from a Tacoma. What were your thoughts about the performance up I70 and climbing on some of the steep grades with the 33’s? Did it feel like it was a little bogged down?
Thanks for watching. Although we haven't driven I70 yet, we have taken it over several mountain passes in Colorado, California, and Mexico now. There in plenty of power for us and it never feels like it's having any problem going as fast as I want.
I have the opportunity to purchase a zr2 bison from a local chevy dealer in this same sand dune color with the black alloy wheels. Just might go ahead and buy the truck
Thanks! We hope that you get yours soon. We went with the first one we could get our hands on that was close to what we wanted to save some time. Turns out this one was a special order that the person gave up on.
I sat in one yesterday. In a normal seating position, seeing over the hood, I was seeing the ground 50-60 feet in front of me. Am I missing something? Weirdly enough, where I was at the time, I was in a rental in a Jeep Gladitor and in that seat, seeing over the hood, I was seeing the ground 12 feet in front of the front tires. Have you found that in real world use, you can't see where you are going when in rough stuff without the use of the camera. I didn't drive the ZR2, just sat in it since it was the dealer's wife's personal car. I also concluded the seats in the gladitor where 10 out of 10 and the seats in the ZR2 would cause me to NOT order one. Your findings? The Colorado is way cool, but with its electronic problems they are already having, I'd be cautious once the warranty expires. Almost too much space shuttle stuff on the car.
Thanks for watching! The hood is definitely a hindrance to seeing. Nothing beats a Jeep view other than maybe our Tracker. I used to have a Wragler and loved being able to see but we'll definitely get used to knowing where our tires are in the ZR2. The seats seem nice to me but anything pretty much beats the Ram Promaster van seats (our last vehicle for 5 years living in it). The electronics are scary but everyone is doing it so there isn't much of a way around it anymore.....sadly.
Looks nice. I went with the GMC and got the Denali trim, came to about the same price as yours. My first tank was not great 18mpg if I remember right. I did a 3k mile drive recently and averaged 20mpg overall, mostly interstate at 80mph. I think the milage does get a little better over time. If I keep it around 65mph I think the milage should be around 25mpg...high speed is not great for the mpg. I love the off road capability of the AT4x/ZR2 but I needed the payload and towing more than the off road capability.
Thanks for watching! Tank 2 is currently showing about 22MPG. I have a tendency to drive fast so I'll be happy if I get 18-20. We were really torn on the towing and payload too. We feel comfortable that we'll be able to pull all of what we're trying to do with the ZR2 but we'll definitely have to be careful about our build out choices.
@@DrifterJourney power wise I think you will be fine. I did a short 20 mile tow with a 7,300ish lbs travel trailer and power was not a problem, even up some good hills. Suspension and swaying will be your biggest issues for the ZR2. If towing, get something with sway control. The trailer I was towing was pushing me around quite a bit going over 60mph with the winds and bumpy roads (the trailer was lacking sway control).
For sure. That's not a bad idea at all. We'll mainly just be hauling water (probably around 4,000 lbs) a fairly short distance down the highway. The neighbors are currently doing it in a Jeep Rubicon and it seems to be going well. I think I'll be better off but will get some sway stuff to help if needed.
I also have a Denali and had the ZR2 on order. I have not seen over 20mpg. I had a tiny bit on the interstate and I’m over 2k miles. But I do a lot of in town and average 18-19mpg.
Check your fuses. Might be causing your signal problem. Most of the Colorado's fuses are not seated all the way. I checked our Z71 and about 80% of them were not seated.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately it doesn't seem like deals are to be had currently on the ZR2 (or any Colorado's).....at least out west. It ended coming in at around $53k plus tax. Hopefully inventory will catch up with demand and give people a chance to haggle on price a little. We ended up right at sticker plus $800 dealer fee. Some dealers were a little lower on their fee but never got one in stock for us. A few other dealers were charging up to $5k over sticker and were getting it. Prices won't drop until folks stop overpaying. Unfortunately we needed a reliable vehicle and didn't have time to wait for prices to drop (if they ever do). I was worried they will start producing them as 2024 models soon and possibly increase the price again.
@Drifter Journey I agree with you on the electronic lockers. That’s the best feature on the ZR2. The outboard DSSV on the rear is only on the ZR2. Ford started this with the F-150. My 23 Silverado trail boss doesn’t have that. Helps with handling (in addition to the DSSV). Beautiful truck.
Thanks for watching! The Trail Boss decision would have been really difficult for me if it would have come with the e-locker in the rear. I'm sure glad it doesn't because we really like all the other nice touches the ZR2 came with.
In other videos, they had mentioned that add the 35's without regearing the front and rear diffs. Others mentioned that whenever turning the front wheel at full lock to the left or right tire rub make the vehicle will come to a full stop at idle speeds. What is your experience with this?
Thanks for watching! We're still on the stock 33's so we don't have any issues. I don't plan on sizing up because think it will be more than capable stock for our needs. I definitely don't want to mess with trimming, re-gearing, or our warranty.
Thanks for watching. Last year's truck is pretty sweet too! We thought long and hard but ultimately liked the upgrades for this model year. I should be happy keeping it stock.
Thanks for watching! 33's are the sweet spit for us but the Bison will be awesome. I would like the extra skid protection and a winch bumper on ours. I'm scared to see the Bison price ($60k?) and knew it would be over our build budget so I snatched this one up to keep myself from being tempted to slurge more.
Great review! Gotta ask are the headlight switches physical? I remember one of these Chevy trucks put the headlight cluster within the digital dash to access, which is a big no from me. Wondering if this is back to physical light switch
Thanks for watching! We're stoked with it and love how it drives......although anything is probably smoother than the vans we drove for the past 5 years. I turned off the buckle to drive for the passenger (I think) but I'll have to dig around in there to get things dialed.
Thanks for watching. I knew I wanted both lockers so it was between the ZR2 and AT4X. I didn't like the interior color on the Canyon or the added price so it made my decision pretty easy.
@@DrifterJourney it’s nice to see this truck going strong over the tacoma at the moment, but i’m really disappointed that the seats don’t fold down, now i have to go buy a dog seat cover lol and figure out how to tetris luggage until i see options for a bed cover
Yeah! That was the first thing I tried to do.....then I Googled it because I thought I had to be missing something. Turns out they just did something dumb to save a buck.
@@DrifterJourney i’m just annoyed how expensive this truck is and seems to be the only one with ventilated seats, i would def without hesitation go with the GMC CANYON if it had grab handles or more rugged look inside, matt finishes instead of piano gloss black. but the chevy has a cool trim with the neon stitching and cool grill.
I'm thinking about getting one, I don't like that you have to get the desert boss package to get the sports bar, but I wonder if you really need those for off roading or they're more just for looks.
Thanks for watching! I wouldn't think you would need it for off roading. You could definitely add a light bar other places if needed. I was interested in the winch mount bumper from the desert boss but don't think I can order it for mine. I definitely didn't was to pay for the other items on the Desert Boss so I'll wait for a different winch option to be made at some point.
Very noce truck. Love the color choice. Ive really been considering the new colorado zr2 but not sure if I can go back to a midsized truck. In the market for a new truck and truck prices have just gotten crazy and even this great midsized truck is priced high in my opinion. For the price the interior lights should be LED and I agree, I think manufacturers have removed certain features to save money but were conveniences for the consumer.
Thanks for watching! If it's any consolation, this mid-size is huge and way bigger than full size trucks from back in the day. All kidding aside, they are all overpriced and it sucks. I wanted a Power Wagon but couldn't justify the money. I also know that a mid size will be much better for the types of trails we go on. It will just take some getting used to living in it for extended trips.
@DrifterJourney Thanks so much for the reply. Yes, it does. I have a 17' ram 1500 and wanted an HD, wasn't set on Brand, and when I was ready, everything went crazy. The power wagon is awesome but definitely a pretty penny. Happy and safe travels, and I hope the Zr2 works well for you!
The headlights button is Off, Auto, Parking/Running Lights, and Headlights. High beams are on the wiper switch. I believe it has Auto High Beams that you can turn off and control High beams on your own.
Thanks for watching and helping me figure things out. So......does that mean the aux does the fog lights? I'm just glad I can turn the lights off and control the high beam.
That I don't know as how to turn on the fog lights. I am still waiting for my truck. I built one and is scheduled to be built on Monday. BTW..beautiful truck.
Thank you! We're pretty stoked on it. We talked about building one but our local dealer still can't get allocation (small dealer problems) and we needed to sell our van before we could get it........which means we would have been ordering late. That's when I started the find something that checked most boxes search and got lucky. What did you order? Hopefully it comes soon for you.
Thanks...I hope I will get it by the end of the month. I got the normal ZR2, Sterling Gray. I added a tonneau cover, sunroof, removal steps. It will have the safety package and the convenience package. I decided I didn't need all the cameras or the Bose stereo. I didn't care about the adaptive cruise either.
Sounds like you'll have a pretty sweet setup. I didn't want the adaptive cruise but was pleasantly surprised about how it worked. I probably wouldn't pay for it if I was ordering though.......because I'm cheap and it's not necessary. Same goes for the cameras. They are nice but not $1,000 nice (or however much they were).
The turn singles stays on because its a one tap featured. tap the turn handle down don't press single stays on as you switch lanes I've in counter this in older BMW's.
Congrats! You literally got your call in minutes before i did. Guess ill wait for my order to go through. When i get mine i would love to get together and do some off-roading with you here in Colorado.
Thank you for watching! I definitely felt lucky when I called and found out it was available. There were a couple others around the country but this was the most convenient. It had a couple options I wouldn't have ordered but worked out since I didn't have to wait.......or fly and drive across the country for another one. Basically the upgrades covered themselves by being close(ish). Let us know when you get yours and we'll see what we have going on. I'm hoping for a Moab weekend as soon as it cools off.
Be prepared to see the ZR2 content getting flooded next. People are starting to get their hands on them. I've definitely watched my fair share of G80 jumps on the Trail Boss and it solidified my decision about the ZR2....even though the price hurt.
Thanks for watching! I think you nailed it there. I'm pretty sure it's the same flare and us cheap Chevy folk don't get the nice upgrades the GMC has. Probably save them money by not making 2 different flares.
Some jurisdictions require marker lights. That’s why those indentations are there on the flares. Most manufacturers use global platforms these days, which allows these trucks to be sold in Europe (as an example).
Congrats on the truck looks sick!!! Love the color! We'll be matching down in Baja! But we're going to struggle keeping up with y'all. I was debating on the Harbor Freight Badlands Winch for our van's rear hitch.
Thanks! A rear mounted winch could come I handy for the next time you get stuck. We're excited to build this thing out and look forward to taking it places we've skipped before. We definitely should make some things happen as soon as we're (and you guys) are able to.
I’m putting in an order for basically the identical truck and options this week. I’m starting to second guess whether I really need the sunroof and if I should add the Bose. I’d honestly rather have a good quality stereo over a sunroof so I guess I answered my own question lol
Thanks for watching! I picked this one up because it was the first one I could get my hands on. I didn't need the sunroof but I'm not complaining about having it.....although the camper setup we're going with will cover it. I've always upgraded my own stereo systems but I'm getting old and the Bose seems to be sufficient.
Thanks for watching. You nailed it there! I was trying to pin down where I had seen them before. Probably had some overstock from 10 years ago and decided to put them to use.
Man that’s a nice truck. I’ve looked at this one the trail boss the at4 and at4x. Also the in 1500 and 2500 because I want a camper to. In a perfect world I want/ need a Colorado zr2 and a 2500 hd z71.
Thanks for watching! I hear you there. If only money grew on trees and trucks weren't ridiculously priced these days. We could definitely use more towing capabilities and a bigger slide in camper. But......we wanted mid size for narrow trails/forest roads. I guess a dream rig would be a mid size version of our friends, Bound For Nowhere, rig. Flatbed with a 4 wheel camper setup......if that even exists on a mid size.
Thanks for watching! I told them I had a return flight booked but they knew I wasn't going to turn it down. The tailgate would have been a nice feature if it worked properly. It still gets used anyways.
serious question cause I own two Golden Retrievers: Do you think the ZR2 is too high for them to jump up and down daily into the back seat? I know they can jump that high but it seems like it could take a toll if doing it everyday
Thanks for watching! Our 70+lb dog with 1 bum knee seems to think that's it's no issue at all. We got her a handicap ramp because she's getting knee surgery soon and it rests nicely on the rock sliders. Here is an affiliate link to the one we're using. amzn.to/3OsYPaK
@@DrifterJourney Thanks for the info! We have a Chevy Blazer and they jump in and out easily. I know the ZR2 will a little higher. I am high considering buying the Colorado or Canyon and my main concern is if it's not too high for my dogs. LOL
should have stuck with the z71 . not enough addons for the price of the z72 and soon with all the aftermarket items comming it will kill the cost proint by going up
Thanks for watching! We really wanted the electronic lockers and liked the price point with that included. I also would have added rock sliders so it was worth it for my situation. Adding true lockers to a Z71 (with labor) would most likely cover the cost difference and void the factory warranty.
Thanks for watching! Trust me......it's not easy. We are always playing a game of save, be frugal for certain things, don't go out, and hope for the best. We're lucky and grateful that we saved a bunch of money when we had our big kid jobs otherwise none of this would have happened. It's definitely a hustle though and we hope we can keep it going.
Thanks for watching! I'm 6'2".....as for the truck, my measurements (quick look nothing scientific) show it being about 6'2" at the base of the antenna. The antenna is 8" tall so I'm coming up with 6'10" total. I just ordered this stubby antenna to drop it back down to around 6'4" (for good camper topper fitment). I hope you have at least a 7ft garage door opening. amzn.to/3Ym8SD1
I think that's an awesome looking truck maybe just as good looking in the front as the new Tacoma that's going to come out however one thing that pisses me off about Chevy and any other manufacturer that offers LED headlights and tail lights any incandescent lights like those turn signals above that right there is a deal breaker. I know it's got a lot of other nice stuff and that's fine but that right there is just one little thing that does not need to be there. It's just like the Chevy Tahoe right now it looks beautiful till you get back around to the tail lights and see all that incandescent mix with LED it's cheap and crappy. Nice video though.
Thanks for watching and also sharing! I found it and turned it off. It seems like it still asked for the driver to belt up every once in a while but I might be crazy.
Thanks for watching and also sharing. I can't remember what I said in the video but that sounds about right. I think it was a little less than that once I added some of the stuff I needed/wanted on the Trail Boss that came standard on the ZR2.
Thank you for watching! Base price on the ZR2 is $46,800. This one had $3,940 in added options bringing it to $50,740. Then they add a destination charge of $1,495 making the actual grand total $52,235. Then add tax, title, licensing fees, and dealer fees to get an even higher out the door price. That will vary by state and dealer though.
Thanks for watching! I guess that depends on what you're looking for. These trucks are the size of full size trucks from around 15 years ago. We find it to be very comfortable but I don't have to ride in the back.
You payed 12k more than I payed for my new Trail Boss,,,I was gonna get what you got,, I put 33k down from saving ,,with things economy up in the air,,I just want to pay it off ASAP,,BY Dec. mine has power seat, tow package, sprayed in bed liner, sliding rear window,,I live in Phoenix Az,I don’t need heat this and that,,my truck is perfect for me,,it’s that medium gray or silver,,with black wheelsI forgot what they call it,same tailgate w stow and go,,allweather floor mats, payed 41,200, I got lucky cause they marked the rest of their Colorados up ,my sales guy even told me I got lucky,,,told me his boss was markin the rest up wich is sorry, they had a LT two wheel drive for 41,100 and it sold,, my trail boss has the same hitch and trailer brake system, I got mine to pull my 20ft Bullet bass boat!
Thanks for watching and congratulations on your truck! It sounds like your rig is pretty much exactly how I had the Trail Boss planned. I had added the Evotex leather/trim too. We went back and forth for a long time deciding on which model to get. I had a Trail Boss reserved that had everything I wanted but it never showed up (in transit for months). We definitely paid a premium for the ZR2 but think it's a better fit overall for our needs.
@@DrifterJourneythank ,,you only negative is the guy that ordered and backed out the day I came in IS,,,IT came with 20s I HATE 20s,,their black and still look nice but not my style,,as soon as I pay it off I’m buying some brand new military style 18s with big aggressive sidewall it’ll look sick, and my decal guys gonna make me some bow tie decals for the hubs to make them look Chevrolet ,,then I’m selling the wheels and tire for 2500 they cost 3500 wheels and tires,,,,plus my trucks a toy,,not a daily so it won’t even have 1k miles on it after I pay it off your truck is great 👍
I know the 2000-2022 Colorados with the diesel and 6-cylinder engines could get >250,000 miles on an engine. The 4-cylinder is not likely to and in the 2023 models you are stuck with only 4-cylinder engines.
Thanks for watching! I still think the Trail Boss is a great truck for those that want to save a little extra cash. I thought long and hard but finally just dealt with it. I'm sure glad we did!
1st thing, "excessively" undercoat undercarriage with Fluid Film!! Or whatever the locals find best. 5gal Fluid Film kit will do your van also with leftovers for years to come. I wish they had a simple spray-on for the upper body. We live @ the beach and "RUST NEVER SLEEPS". Waxing is a PITA.
Thanks for watching and also sharing that info! I'll have to look into it. Rust sucks but luckily it's not usually too bad out this way. We'll most likely be spending some long stretches on the beach in Baja so it wouldn't hurt to protect it.
Thanks for watching. Which trim did you test drive? The only cheap feeling for me is the interior lighting. The rest feels quite nice. I like the plastic where it is on the ZR2 because those are spots that get dirty. It should allow for easy cleaning. Our other car is a 95 Tracker so this is basically a Bentley in comparison.
Thanks for watching! I did all that and then tried to get it lower when I showed up in person. They weren't dealing much yet because nobody was able to get their hands on them at that time.
LMAO. You flew in and had them pick you up at the airport and thought they were going to come down on price? You were what's called a laydown, you had no negotiating leverage at all. Zero.
I let them know that I had a round trip ticket in case it didn't work out. I've got no problem walking out on a deal if I'm not happy with it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching! I looked at that first but it looked like a pain and we don't have a place to store them yet. I might work on some sort of seat delete setup this summer.
What bed? That's a joke because we live in a camper and don't have storage under the bed. Do you know how to access the bolts for the seat back? They looked like a pain.
Bruh that thing was 10k more than my trail boss with every factory add on and the High output upgrade done at the dealership. Picked mine up at chevy dealership in Pueblo CO 2.5 weeks ago. Granted id prefer to have some better suspension and the i prefer the approach angle on the zr2… for the money I saved i can afford some upgrades down the road. Also the lever inside the zr2 is definitely a plus
Thanks for watching! We went back and forth a lot trying to decide Trail Boss or ZR2 and I'm glad we went this route. I like that it comes with all the upgrades from the factory so I don't have to void my warranty right away doing modifications. The leather was a huge upgrade too. I was reading about the plastic in the Trail Boss and know that the part that my knee rests on would have bugged me a lot. The extra money was a tough pill to swallow though........trust me......we thought long and hard. Hopefully it is reliable and we have it a long time to justify our decision.
Sorry to hear that you got hail damage already. I didn't really want the sunroof but I was so ready to have a vehicle that we went for it. We don't tend to get large hail (fingers crossed) down here in SW Colorado so hopefully it won't be an issue. I guess that's what insurance is for is something bad happens.
@@DrifterJourney totally get it. Definitely went the right way with it man. Its a badass truck! I hit the subscribe button. Look forward to seeing more of your content
@@Problematicbehavior Thanks! I'd love to find someone local with a Trail Boss and get them on the same trail to compare. I'm sure the ZR2 is much more willing and capable than I am.
I'm getting a lot of people telling me that so a video will be coming out soon showing why it's 10k more (my math actually shows $5k if you go apples to apples). They are both awesome trucks but the math seems to add up for the ZR2.......if that's what you need.
Beautiful truck. But these are NOT in demand to just justify the price. GMC just cut production numbers and limited the availability of these vehicles. I was looking at the ATX4 but now decided to go with the new Tacoma TRD Pro
Thanks! I'm torn about that statement. I haven't looked at what the MSRP is on the new TRD Pro but I'd imagine it will be similar to the ZR2? If so, it will not have the same level of off road capabilities (as far as I know). I don't believe it comes with a front locker, 33's, or the DSSV suspension. I'm guessing it has Fox and I'm curious how it compares. All in all, I didn't want to jump on the Tacoma bandwagon but we'll see how they compare when they're both out. They will both be nice trucks for sure.
@@DrifterJourney To be fair you hardly tested durability😝. One of these even nearly snapped in half during a race lol. The V6 ZR2 is definitely durable. I have seen a bone stock last gen ZR2 launched and insane Hollywood movie stunt distance off of huge jump in a jump competition for purpose built custom trophy truck type rigs, and it only had a little dent where the top right corner of the bed connected to the rear of the cabin, during the landing. No broken glass or anything. It sold my husband on the truck when he sold his old Tacoma! I enjoyed your video and appreciate the reply. Thanks!
@lunamaria1048 I don't plan in taking it off any sweet jumps but am hoping it doesn't fold on our offroad adventures........or if it does, hopefully it's within the 3yr/36k mile bumper to bumper warranty.
@@DrifterJourney I'll subscribe so I can follow off road adventures in a new ZR2! I love the last gen ZR2 ever since I rented one from a company that rents out overland ready rigs, on the west coast. I originally was very reluctantly and took it because it was all they had available lol. Ultimately I fell in love with the truck lol. I hope this new generation is truly an upgrade! I'm just holding off on deciding to see how well the next Tacoma and Ranger Raptor do.
Thanks for watching and also sharing your opinion. I think they are both nice and probably will each have their own advantages. I still wish some of the competitors would put a front locker in their trucks.
did it not have the trailer button where if you are pulling a trailer its keeps the transmission from shifting to quick and then has to down shift the older model have that feature?
@@DrifterJourney on mine where you have the lever buttons in the center area, I have 1 of those that has a trailer symbol and when you click it you get a symbol up near your speed odometer and it readjust your shift points, so your truck doesn't shift to a high gear to soon. I didn't see it on yours and I wonder if they did away with it . when my is on and I am using cruise control it keeps me from losing a lot of speed when going uphill. maybe they added it in under where you pick your different terrain controls and did away with the lever. Its interesting to find out all the new things they have done to the new models.
I found the answer. There isn't a button for it but the tow/haul feature is accessed by changing the drive mode (spinning the knob by the 4wd buttons).
Thank you for watching! I'm measuring right at about 38" (non scientific evening measurement) for the front fender as it sits on a gravel driveway that might not be perfectly flat.
@@DrifterJourney thanks for measuring that for me I have been really curious about what it would be , I have a 2021 zr2 that came with a factory 2 inch lift and then I put another 2 inch lift on it and mine came with 31-inch tires and I put 33s on it and my front fender is at 41 inches . I look forward to more of your videos
@@DrifterJourney I am not sure if i would call it a beast but I am extremely happy with it I had also put chevys performance ball spline half shafts on it and it made a huge difference in steering performance and I restyled the truck . it is a extended cab with the 6 ft bed and has the sport bar with the led lights on it. it is the sand dune metallic and all the restyled stripes and lettering are black except for the zr2 emblem which I had made twice the stock size and on the front fenders where (I think it's the desert boss) has strips it says GEN II in the same color as the zr2. I had done the restyling back when I 1st bought it so I was quite taken back when I saw that chevy had put strips where I had mt GEN II emblems. I always get approached whenever I have the truck out and get a lot of comments and people say that's how they should look coming out of the factory but now GM has changed the body style of the Colorado. You won't be able to get this look unless you buy the older model. and you wont get this sporty look with a 4 door because the purportions just are not there for this look. some day I hope to figure out how to post a pict of it I am quite computer illerate.
Shoot us an email photo if you can. You can send it to thedrifterjourney@gmail.com I was torn about getting the 2022 with a 6ft bed (short cab) but figured we need the back seats for the dog now.
I agree. I was imagining that they would have kept them like that on this new model. My guess is that they were trying to get to the same level as the frame rails for some reason.
While I've been wanting a ZR2 for a while now, I priced a Ranger Raptor last night, and it was $58,485, about $5k more than my ZR2 build (which ran $53,615). It had a twin turbo V6 with 405hp (which is a plus), nicer interior, a 10 speed tranny vs 8 speed, and some other things, but no power moonroof, no rear interior HVAC vents, and absolutely dismal gas mileage. The gas mileage on the ZR2 seems pretty bad, and not that I'm buying the truck for gas mileage, but, while I'd rather have 400+hp in a sports car, in a truck it's not as big a deal. Though the V6 of the same displacement is a nicer engine, I didn't drive the Bronco Raptor, but did drive that V6 in a Bronco (I was considering one), and it's a nicer engine than the Chevy's (I drove the Z71). In the end, I think I'm gravitating back to the ZR2, maybe a 2024 since it seems they have some quality gremlins to fix (poor fit and finish, overheating transmissions). Plus, they might make it in the orange I want to match(ish) my KTM...
Thanks for watching and sharing! I like how the Rangers look but couldn't justify almost $60k for a midsize truck. I already struggled with $50k plus for the ZR2. I figured the Ranger Raptor was going to be more than what you saw so that's actually a pleasant surprise. I'm just curious to see if anyone else will put in a front locker. That was a big plus for us even though I probably won't ever need it. Someone else just commented that they are getting 19.5 MPG in their ZR2 so I'm hopeful. As for the 2024, I contemplated the same thing but ultimately needed a vehicle and was worried that the price will adjust again with inflation. The 2024 ZR2 Bison was tempting also but I think it is overkill for us......and I'm guessing will top $60k.
@@DrifterJourney Yeah, $60k is the absolute max I'm willing to spend for something like this. Gotta keep some money left for motorcycles, guns, and audio gear! I too thought the Ranger Raptor would START at like $70+k, so, it was a nice surprise to see that it doesn't. So, it's still barely in the running though I'm 90% positive I'll get the ZR2, we'll see. My boss has a Silverado Z71 (with less knobby 20" tires) with the turbo plus engine, and at our altitude at work (where he lives), he's getting 19+ average in mixed driving, so, I can live with that. I also tend to run my tire as max pressure to get better mileage and a less "squishy" feel will help with mileage a little. Certainly "Bidenflation" is a worry, hell, mortgage rates have almost tripled, gasoline has doubled, and natural gas here has doubled, so, there is that, but some of those concerns (marginally overheating tranny's WITHOUT towing) are a concern for me so I might wait. It also gives me time to save more. I was going to put $25k down, and waiting will make that maybe $30+, so, that will help. I like the Bison....BUT, think it's not going to compete with the Ranger Raptor (which will be a better deal) because it doesn't have an engine upgrade over the ZR2. So, what I'm hoping for is maybe a factory 1-2" lift for the ZR2 and maybe bigger fender flares etc. so I can put 35's on it. That's as big a tire as I'll ever need. I'm originally from CO (in NM since '18), so, I look to get back up there for some wheeling ('m new to it) though there is a TON of trails here too. Great vid, and best of luck with it!
I hear you on that! Definitely need some extra money for the other toys. These trucks are highly capable without getting the most extreme models. I'm hoping that we'll see around 19MPG but am happy with anything over 15.5 because that's what we got in the van. I have not heard about the transmission situation so hopefully we don't end up with that issue. I also would have liked to see the Bison geared differently so I didn't really look into it any more. We're looking forward to testing it out on some trails soon. I was checking temperatures in Moab and it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer before we can camp comfortably there.
Not sure if this was said, but that ranger raptor is going to get similar MPG but requires 97octane fuel. So theoretically you'll be spending more on gas with the Raptor. . .400HP is sick though.
@@DrifterJourney Oh, and you mentioned a dealer in NM that you didn't like, which one is that? I'll try and steer clear of that one! I'm in the ABQ area and am not real impressed with any of them, even the Larry Miller Chevy dealership (which are usually the best).
Thanks for watching! I wish they still made a 6ft bed but I'm guessing the numbers just weren't there to make it worth producing. Seems like a lot of folks just want a truck these days and don't need to haul things. We already bought a small trailer for running errands that the bed can't handle.
I love how you can hear the turbo. So many manufacturers do stuff to quiet it down that I will ultimately undo to get that sound back.
Thanks for watching! Why try to quiet a turbo??? I find the sound to be quite enjoyable. It also gives you the feeling of power happening.
That's not any fun. Hopefully they can get it figured out pretty quickly.
What will you do when gas prices hit $5 per gallon again??? Loved my 2018 zr2.
Thanks for the video.
Great review! Also, I'm jealous of the scenery you have as I live in middle TN. Going to the mountains takes a special trip.
Thanks for watching! We thought hard about planting roots in TN but ultimately weren't able to walk away from the rockies.
Sorry to hear you bought a Ranger for nearly the same price ouch
Thanks for watching! Or at least reading the comments. I was really liking the look of some of the Rangers I was seeing but personally found the ZR2 to be a better option for our goals.
@@DrifterJourneythe ZR2 is hand over fist better than the Ranger. No question.
@ethenjordan2010 I 100% agree! I love my ZR2 but also think the Ranger is a nice little truck too......just different.
I have watched lots of reviews on these new Colorado's and several have complained about computer issues.
I saw some of that too. Luckily all is well with ours so far and hopefully it's just over the air updates that will fix any minor glitches.
Awesome truck. The only thing I’d change is I wish GM would make the dash and the door panels soft touch for the money.
Nice truck..I ordered mine in sterling grey metallic..cant wait to drive it.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully yours will arrive soon.
I have the opportunity to purchase a zr2 bison from a local chevy dealer in this same sand dune color with the black alloy wheels. Just might go ahead and buy the truck
Sounds like a good opportunity! Although.......in all honesty......I don't know how hard they are to come by these days. Thanks for watching!
Congrats. Ordered mine way back in December, scheduled to be built any day now. So look forward to finally getting it.
What do you do for a living?
Greg is currently working construction on our house and I am an editor of an RVing magazine, along with a few other side hustles.
@@ethenjordan2010 not too shabby.
Check your fuses. Might be causing your signal problem. Most of the Colorado's fuses are not seated all the way. I checked our Z71 and about 80% of them were not seated.
Thanks for watching! I checked the fuses and mine were actually decent. I only had a few that could be pushed in a little more.
What did you pay for the truck? I currently have a gmc sierra 22 model. My boy just bought a trailboss. Im thinking about buying a zr2
Like your vids man, if you live out in Colorado you should try taking it by the TFL guys course, sure it would help with traffic to your channel.
Thanks for watching! I thought about reaching out to them but I think they are a good 5 or 6 hours away from us. It's a great idea though.
@Drifter Journey
I agree with you on the electronic lockers.
I just noticed this is not the bison model that one comes 35's from the factory my bad..
All good!👍
I screwed up and got my zr2 last year. Should have waited for the 23 with the upgraded interior and just over all better looks.
Thanks for watching. Last year's truck is pretty sweet too! We thought long and hard but ultimately liked the upgrades for this model year. I should be happy keeping it stock.
I'm waiting for Chevy to announce ZR2 Bison pricing. I'm loving the stock 35" tires from the factory.
There is no physical switch. I was pretty bummed about it but have found it to be better than expected.
Awesome truck man! Also, the buckle to drive can be turned off in the settings.
Thanks for watching! We're stoked with it and love how it drives......although anything is probably smoother than the vans we drove for the past 5 years. I turned off the buckle to drive for the passenger (I think) but I'll have to dig around in there to get things dialed.
nice truck, did you compare between this and the AT4? or AT4x
@alexanderradec317 the Chevy looks good! It does have some of that piano plastic though.....which scratches so easily.
@@DrifterJourney Hey thanks for the reply, I'll keep that all in mind!
Thank you! It will be perfect as long as it's reliable. It's definitely more than capable for what we need.
Thanks for watching! We know about that feature but it definitely had issues. Seems like I may have fixed it though.
@DrifterJourney it's good to see some vids on the zr2. So sick of trail boss Vids.
Be prepared to see the ZR2 content getting flooded next. People are starting to get their hands on them. I've definitely watched my fair share of G80 jumps on the Trail Boss and it solidified my decision about the ZR2....even though the price hurt.
I don't understand the dips on the Fender flares, they bug me. They could have placed running lights like they did on the GMC.
Have you thought about those offroad pull behind campers?
Thanks for watching. I have but they don't really jive with our budget. We're looking at the topper/campers for the cost vs adventure ratio.
I sell these things you gotta have bose system brother
The shifter and maps lights are out of a Buick Encore...lol
If they pick you up from the airport they know they have you. I could care less about the fancy tailgates. Beautiful truck.
Thanks for watching!
LOL
It's definitely pretty tall but I'm guessing they won't mind.
I'm pretty sure you can override the seat belt safety feature. At least you could at one point.
Thanks for watching! I found out how to make it start without belts but it still gets mad when you drive without it on.
should have stuck with the z71 . not enough addons for the price of the z72 and soon with all the aftermarket items comming it will kill the cost proint by going up
Thanks for watching! We really wanted the electronic lockers and liked the price point with that included. I also would have added rock sliders so it was worth it for my situation. Adding true lockers to a Z71 (with labor) would most likely cover the cost difference and void the factory warranty.
I’m trying to work out a deal for a 23 ZR2 that’s in Ohio. I’m in Georgia. None closer to me. I want the Glacier Blue.
Nice! Thank you for watching. Hopefully they have some deals by now. I flew in for ours because it was the only only one I could find.
Man, how do y’all afford property and new vehicles off being nomadic with some ad revenue… Not hating just jealous
P.S. Your comment and support helps! We appreciate all of our viewers.
Hell yah. Respect the frugal. What is the 300 lbs camper you’re looking into it??
We're looking closely at the OVRLND camper setup. We're hoping to see one in person soon so we can decide. They look pretty solid though.
I always think the same thing. Just jealous. Interesting to hear realistic stuff like this
question. how tall are you? I hope this thing fits in my garage

Thanks for watching! They definitely still cheap out on a bunch of little stuff in these really expensive vehicles. It's quite unfortunate.
you can turn off the buckle to shift feature, atleast you can in my 23 silverado
Thanks for watching and also sharing! I found it and turned it off. It seems like it still asked for the driver to belt up every once in a while but I might be crazy.
What’s the car payment like?
$0 so not bad at all. We had been living in a van (2 actually) full time for the past 5 years and were able to save some money.
The average price difference between a TrailBoss and a ZR2 is about $10K.
Thanks for watching and also sharing. I can't remember what I said in the video but that sounds about right. I think it was a little less than that once I added some of the stuff I needed/wanted on the Trail Boss that came standard on the ZR2.
Liked for the dog alone
I knew she would pay off sooner or later! Thanks for watching.
What is the msrp? Nice truck!
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you. We appreciate you watching and leaving a comment.
Could the Colorado be a family vehicle?
@@DrifterJourneythank ,,you only negative is the guy that ordered and backed out the day I came in IS,,,IT came with 20s I HATE 20s,,their black and still look nice but not my style,,as soon as I pay it off I’m buying some brand new military style 18s with big aggressive sidewall it’ll look sick, and my decal guys gonna make me some bow tie decals for the hubs to make them look Chevrolet ,,then I’m selling the wheels and tire for 2500 they cost 3500 wheels and tires,,,,plus my trucks a toy,,not a daily so it won’t even have 1k miles on it after I pay it off your truck is great 👍
@jimmycline4778 I think you're on to something there. I say no to 20's also! I was stoked to have 17's for more sidewall.
Got my 2022 Z71 here in NM, all the chevy dealerships are terrible except Tillery
Thanks for watching and sharing that information for the NM folks looking.
I know the 2000-2022 Colorados with the diesel and 6-cylinder engines could get >250,000 miles on an engine.
The 4-cylinder is not likely to and in the 2023 models you are stuck with only 4-cylinder engines.
Thanks for watching! This is all stuff we weighed in on when making our decision. We personally find a gasser as a better fit for us.
That truck is sick 🔥
Thanks! We're pretty happy with it so far.
Trailboss is so anemic. Its a stripped down trim with no amenities not even fog lights. I dont blame you
Thanks for watching! I still think the Trail Boss is a great truck for those that want to save a little extra cash. I thought long and hard but finally just dealt with it. I'm sure glad we did!
I wouldn’t have blamed them if they gave it an electric locker in the rear and skid plates…of course the cruise control too.
@@DrifterJourney I guess they don't salt roads in Colorado?
No salt but they started using mag chloride which I think is pretty bad too......just not as bad as salt.
sickkkkkkk! can't wait for an off road ride in it!
You'll have to come visit first! Or we'll just make it happen in Baja.
Nice truck man 👍
Thank you! We're very happy with it so far.
Test drove wanted to like it. Interior felt cheap still… better, but cheap
If it's not getting at lest 20mpg,it's not for me..nice looking truck though
Thanks for watching! I'm currently getting 21mpg on this tank. 17.8 overall with mostly city and forest roads/trails. 650 miles on it so far.
+ I love that color.
Thanks! I was unsure about it at first but really am happy with it. It would probably be my top choice if we were ordering one.
Always negotiate everything over phone and get it in writing via text or email. Put a refundable deposit to show seriousness.
Thanks for watching! I did all that and then tried to get it lower when I showed up in person. They weren't dealing much yet because nobody was able to get their hands on them at that time.
This looks better than the new Tacoma TRD Pro and the new Ranger Raptor.
Thanks for watching! We completely agree with you on that one......and it has a front locker.
Nice truck
Thank you! We ate very happy with it so far and look forward to taking it on some adventures.
Just take the rear seats out completely. That’s what I typically do.
Thanks for watching! I looked at that first but it looked like a pain and we don't have a place to store them yet. I might work on some sort of seat delete setup this summer.
@@DrifterJourney they just unbolt. It’s very easy. Put them under your bed.
Also ballsy going with a sun roof in CO. Hail already dented my truck
Nice car , ❤
Thank you! It's definitely the nicest car we've ever had.
That’s 10k more than my Trail Boss.
I'm getting a lot of people telling me that so a video will be coming out soon showing why it's 10k more (my math actually shows $5k if you go apples to apples). They are both awesome trucks but the math seems to add up for the ZR2.......if that's what you need.
It’s definitely a nice looking truck.
They both are! I had a Trail Boss on order that never showed up otherwise I probably would have bought that.
LFG!
Thanks for watching! We're excited to build this rig out and see the adventures it takes us on.
The AT4X is absurdly priced here in Canada. My dealer has one listed at $109k...
Even the Silverado ZR2 is listed at $90k...
It looks fragile
Thanks for watching! What looks fragile about it? It feels pretty solid so far.
Did you look into the canyon AT4 it’s back seat lays down.
I did not. They are priced more for the equivalent trim level for fancier stuff inside. The AT4X wasn't really in the budget.
#chevroletbrasil
Thanks for watching!
New Tacoma is a much better truck.
Thanks for watching and also sharing your opinion. I think they are both nice and probably will each have their own advantages. I still wish some of the competitors would put a front locker in their trucks.
I do like the camara package the older models don't have all the camaras.
All the different views are quite nice to have!
did it not have the trailer button where if you are pulling a trailer its keeps the transmission from shifting to quick and then has to down shift the older model have that feature?
Are you referring to tow haul? If so, I imagine it has it but I haven't been into the tow features screen yet.
There isn't a button for it but the tow/haul feature is accessed by changing the drive mode (spinning the knob by the 4wd buttons).
how high is your front fender if you measure from the ground threw the center of the wheel to the edge of the fender
@@jeffreyjohnston6843 sounds like you have a beast of a truck!
You can send it to thedrifterjourney@gmail.com
I was torn about getting the 2022 with a 6ft bed (short cab) but figured we need the back seats for the dog now.
the older models rock sliders might be more like you would like
Why they are not making Colorado with the longer bed? They keep making trucks for people who doesnt need a truck!!!
Thanks for watching! I wish they still made a 6ft bed but I'm guessing the numbers just weren't there to make it worth producing. Seems like a lot of folks just want a truck these days and don't need to haul things. We already bought a small trailer for running errands that the bed can't handle.
