- Digitised master footage of Michael Jackson in Scramble Training, a 1993 interactive ridefilm for the AS-1 motion ride simulator developed by Sega.
Thought to be lost even by Sega personnel themselves, the above footage - all localised segments made by writer/director Hiroshi Uemura and Kenji Sasaki, as well as filmed scenes of Jackson - was recently found on a D2 master tape sold at a car boot sale in the United Kingdom, and kindly digitised by the Oxford Duplication Centre after an appeal on Facebook was answered by @Mechafatnick .
Read more about it here:

Timestamps for all sequences:
Introduction - 00:35
Takeoff #1 - 02:40
Takeoff #2 - 03:35
Ending #1 - 08:10
Ending #2 - 09:40
Ending #3 - 11:10
An extended, uncompressed cut of the full master tape can be found on the Internet Archive thanks to Gaming Alexandria, with extra Japanese version footage and sound test:
archive.org/details/michael-j...
Though this tape represents the first known preservation of the main video contents of the title, ROMs for its gameplay elements, motion data, and an introductory film especially filmed by Jackson remain unarchived. If any of these rare items are possessed by you - or even an AS-1 simulator itself - please do get in touch below! - Игры
This is an amazing find, and even more amazing that it's finally been preserved online. Having footage of Michal Jackson at the peak of his popularity, in a videogame no less, is something special. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this happen!
I agree, the full intro video for the simulator should be found, so this ride/game can be properly documented and experienced!
I wouldn't call it the peak. By this time he had been eclipsed by Nirvana had become an afterthought.
@@arkvinin NOT TRUE!🤡🤡🤡
@@arkvinin An afterthought? Bro, Dangerous sold 32 million copies and is a top 15-20 selling album ever lmao. It’s also an incredible album.
@@arkvinin Nirvana would probably disagree. They were big fans of Jackson and even wore t-shirts of him at some of their performances. They even spoke about the allegations when asked what they thought about it and Kurt said he felt sorry for Mike.
Ironically the surviving members of Nirvana were also the target of a scam falsely claiming child abuse. The kid from the Nevermind cover tried to say that everyone who owned that album was in the possession of child pornography and that it had ruined his life. When in reality that guy (who has recreated the cover multiple times as he's aged, and has the album name TATTOOED on his chest) had been milking that fame for years for money and girls and such. And was now just broke and trying to sue them for a ton of money he didn't deserve. Same as Jackson's accusers. Particularly Wade Robson who only started his claim in 2013 after previously being rejected for the big money job producing Michael Jackson ONE for Cirque Du Soleil. Why on earth would he want that job if he now says he was abused (and that he was 'forced' to testify in 2005 as the main witness for defense even though Jackson had hundreds of people volunteering... and Wade is shown in 2007 video at Neverland with his now wife, praising the place calling it a 'sacred land' and thanking Jackson, who isn't even there cos Neverland was always open to visitors whether Jackson was present or not).
@@ChokeslamToHell Are you serious, did you even check that Thriller sold over 70 million copies before posting. Michael Jackson was on the way down fast in 1992, I was born in 1975 so I don't need to google to remember. The year after the accusations and quick payoff to quiet the victim appeared, his name was tainted forever.
The graphics are amazing for 1993!
That's what I said 😅
i don't believe it...this looks like 1995-1996...
The graphics is mostly prerendered video segments coming from laserdisc.
These are pre-rendered video sequences, not gameplay. The game assets are probably much simpler (we see a black screen during the gameplay).
The graphics are 1993 for amazing!
He was always ahead of his time
Reminds me so much of the opening of the MJs History world tour.. Great find.. thanks for sharing👍😃
You can bet he asked them to do one for his tour, too
True...
@@Etienne_HWait that minute what???
WHAT AN INSANE FIND!!!!
Commander Jackson ❤️😭
Great graphics for that time! It shows how high Michael Jackson was valued.
Graphics are on par for the time period. These would be the pre-rendered backgrounds. Sega CD could do that. (Silpheed is an example of this. Explosions, missles, and lasers would all be displayed over it.) The tech actually goes back to the Colecovision though the console never used it. ViewMaster Interactive was one of the first, displaying game data over video tape.
This is just done via prerendering/offline rendering. Not really that great considering what others did at the same time with that technology.
However, ut does the job as a short ride movie that people forget 5 minutes after leaving.
This is a great find and document of Segas relationship with The King of Pop at the time. Sonic 3s soundtrack is still one of the best ever.
The bad album cover is his ID photo on his jacket!
Love this!
MJ seems to work really well with things involving Space.
Captain EO, Scramble Training, Space Channel 5, and the song Starlight.
EDIT: I forgot about Men In Black 2. Although most of the Alien stuff takes place on Earth.
Probably because he's an alien bro
@@r3v0lv3rz The Moonwalker to be exact
Space, and children...
The "Scream" music video as well. :)

Really cool find. Sega and MJ had an awesome history.
This is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!!!!!! Luv how he says shuttle😆”shuddo”
He was GORGEOUS!!!
This is seriously one of the best things to be found!! Kinda reminds me of Captain EO tbh.
I loved Captain EO
@@DM-wu9jk MJ's Sci-fi stuff is the best.
An amazing find , true gem 💎
That's exceptional. Great discovery. People will love this video.
6:22 “Dang! I’m gonna get you.😇” 🤭
😬
me: "ugh I hate tutorial stages."
Michael Jackson: "hee hee! use the Left Stick to move around."
me:"shamon! shamon!"
I rode this in Las Vegas at the Sega arcade in the Luxor. For some reason I don't remember Michael Jackson but I was young then and lots of stuff back then had mj in it. I remember we crashed the ship at the end. When the landing happens, there were guidelines for the riders to follow by hitting their triggers to adjust approach. 8 of us climbed into a lil moving pod, similar to Star Tours. I remember that crash landing really sticking with me.
They removed MJ from the final release when the CSE allegations starting flying around.
Hello! Can you remember when this would have been? I'm currently trying to work out if the MJ version was actually replaced so this would be great to know
Thank you for sharing this. This is so cool!
The opening song is called... ''Another Part of Me - Michael Jackson''
Moonwalker genesis version
Mickael Jackson went to SEGA Odaiba center in Tokyo Japan in 1996.
I know it because there is an autograph of him there dated 1996. I still have a photo of me and my friend in front of that.
That's a pretty amazing find for Sega fans and Michael Jackson fans and game preservation in general. :O
Thank you for sharing this lost treasure with the world
Long Live the Greatest Musician & Entertainer of All Time: Michael Jackson
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing history. I'm very grateful.
This was so fun to watch! I love lost footage, especially of MJ!
I remember playing this back then in 1996, it blew my mind. MJ as a commander with a closed moving cockpit is awesome, although there's barely any gameplay except pushing green and red buttons on your unmoveable flight stick.
I was wondering how the gameplay was since it seems very scripted. Thanks
Can we just appreciate how cool the graphics are for it's time? this is INSANE for 1993😲
Can we just have an end to people beginning posts with "Can we just appreciate.......".
@@SpeccyHorace I dunno. What's wrong with some appreciation? Better than being negative and hateful. In my opinion anyways. :P
SEGA's 3D was top of the world at the time.
@@SpeccyHorace I agree it's getting kinda annoying at this point
Prerendered graphics are not particularly impressive
HE LOOKS SO GOOD! And the graphics are amazing for it being 1993
No big deal when compared to what was state of the art that year.
Thank you for uploading. I had seen photos of Michael Jackson in Scramble Training on Instagram years ago and wanted to watch the full video but I couldn’t find it then. I am so happy that I finally get to watch it.
❤
This makes me feel like this is a different version of Disney's Star Tours! I would have loved this so much as a kid!
Thanks for uploading
came here after seeing this on a forbes article lol this is crazy
This is a mesmerizing find.
Thanks to all involved! I assumed I'd never get to see this.
Historical preservation efforts are paramount to forging a path to the future.
what a lovely piece of history - thanks so much for sharing!!!
Fantastic find... Huge thanks for this :D
Thank you so much for sharing. Absolutely amazing to see. The good ol’ days. 🙏🙏🙏
Captain EO part 2! Love it!

Nah I noticed that too, I didn't want to say anything about it
This would have blown my tiny little mind back in the day
Beautiful find!
I miss that man so much, thank you for finding this 💙
Thank you for uploading this, and thank you for not putting your own water mark on the footage.
He looks very nice
This is an incredible find for preservation! 👀👀
Thanks heaps for uncovering and uploading this!!!
Made my mornin, that 90s vibe was all I needed to ignite good mood for this day.Thx Mike😎
Thank you, this is my best Christhmas gift! 💜
awesome find. glad it's been preserved
I have vague memories of being on this ride at Luna Park in Melbourne back in 2003.
😱
Thanks for sharing 😍
I completely forgot about this. I went on the arcade machine with my school at Sega World in London. I remember thinking why was Michael being so serious. 😂
I remember playing this at SegaWorld at the London Trocadero! We played it so badly that MJ actually died at the end of the ride...
It was a theme park ride ?
@@georgebriseno yes, or at least was made so it could be in one. The ride was like those 4D rollercoasters that exist. I seem to remember we had to shoot at the screen or fly the ship
@@APorovic wow that's an awesome memory
@@georgebriseno I've actually been looking for this was years, wondering if I'd just imagined it. What I remember is that we did so badly that MJ died at the end - but it was more funny and surprising than tragic, I think some people were actively trying to fail because of how funny it was
@@APorovic I just have the moonwalker Sega game , I wish I could play the arcade version .

Michael loved Sci-fi so this is very fitting for him
I remember riding this one wa few times at Disney Village (Disneyland Paris) back in the day ❤️
I love this so, so much. When he said good job and gave the thumbs up my heart melted 🥲❤️ he is so awesome I bet it was always his dream to be featured in a video game
Incredible. Thank you so much for this.
Awesome find, MJ and videogames are a match made in heaven!
Thank you for preserving this ❤️
THANK YOU SO MUCH, Hugs From Brazil 🇧🇷
This is pure gold
So the footage was found in the UK in a car boot sale. However I bet Sega already has this, who said that Sega lost it and didn't have it themselves? Sega themselves never claimed this, it was only kids online on reddit and such that claimed this, companies don't just release random stuff like this often, so they likely still have it themselves.
what a wild find! I'd heard about these motion sims from videos on the old arcades, but I didn't know MJ was involved! Pretty awesome for what it is. Shame this isn't his best acting though lol
You are a LEGEND. THANK YOU FOR FINDING AND POSTING THIS.
Amazing find!
Thank you for sharing ,amazing :)
This is so sick and the graphics look amazing!!
What an Awesome Find. Thankyou for sharing this with the World
Yep Michael Jackson baby! From what I was reading I think they shot filmed it in end of 1992 but Sega did t finish editing or put out the video until early 1993.
“This is the one thing we didn’t want to happen”

Gaming history is wild. Love the music, kind of reminds me of the exciting music in Star Wars Episode 1. Combat looks heavily informed by Star Wars as well. Looks like fun.
Can You imagine if this was the opening of the Invincible World Tour?
Great find! I rode this thing at Segaworld in the UK around this time and was just staggered by it. The motion on the ride was perfect.
This is my most favorite video I love this ❤❤❤so much I can watch this all day 😊😊

I like how every action scene is incredibly awkward because there's no actual game.

"Come in, Annie. What is your status?"
This was a pack in demo for the cancelled Sega Giga Edge. It also came with a signed copy of authenticity by Micheal Jackson. If you returned the slip to Sega's headquarters and were one of the first ten people to do so Micheal Jackson would come over to your house and play Sega branded video games with you for the evening. He was even gonna bring a trailer full of the current Sega arcade titles for you to play like Virtua Racing. Too bad this system was cancelled at the last minute because of infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. Instead we got the 32x add on a year later.
This is so goofy, even for Michael Jackson
