The 2006 anime and newer games killed that and turned Knuckles into a joke unfortunately. Before that, Knuckles was a legitimate rival to Sonic that could match him equally in a fight when pushed and won just as many rounds against him as he lost.

Knowing how much stronger Chaos Knuckles is compared to the super forms, i wouldve loved a scene where sonic or shadow land a really good upercut on him and he just looks at them unfazed like "was that supposed to hurt?"

This is how Knuckles is REALLY suppose to be! However, the show is called "Sonic" so they did not want Knuckles to outshine Sonic in his own show lol. That is why I believe they did Knuckles the way that they did. Also of course, the writers are influenced by DBZ so they probably wanted to go a similar route.
