Things to Do in Bulgaria: Visit the 1000-year old Rila Monastery and Boyana Church

The stunning 10th century Rila Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint John of Rila, is nestled in in the Rhodope Mountain range in Bulgaria. While it's seen many changes in its thousand year history, it is a working monastery and parts of it still date back to the 13th century. The Rila Monastery is an important pilgrimage site for followers of the Eastern Orthodox church.
Boyana Church was also founded in the 10th century and is an important of the Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox history. Both sites are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
