"Go back to your books and your armchair, plant your trees and watch them grow... If more people valued home above gold the world would be a merrier place"
There is one thing that makes Bilbo very shipable in gay ships, he never gets married. Pippin, Merry and Sam all get married to women but neither Frodo or Bilbo ever get married and mostly live alone (Except when Bilbo adopted Frodo). It is easy to picture both being into men and that's why they have aren't married.
yeah exactly...Tolkien may not have written a romance between him and thorin but he also wrote bilbo as never marrying...which Thorin also didn't...Kili and Fili were his sister sons...he himself had no children we know of...
I didn't really instantly ship Bilbo and Thorin because I wasn't really looking to ship anything ( AND THEN ) the "letsshipeverthingthatmoves" Part of my brain kicked in. I started to notice chemistry between the two and how much eye-fucking was going on. Then I thought "A lonely Hobbit falls in love with a dwarf king and realizes that life is more than a hobbit hole and fine china.....only to lose it all in the end" I fell in a hole called "Bagginsshield" and haven't crawled out since.
I first fell for Frodo and Sam. Their relationship in Lotr is so amazing. I saw the potential with Bilbo and Thorin in the books, but the movies make it much more noticeable. I'm so glad that fans still write fanfics even though the movies are over.
You don't even need to know who the characters are to get the ship feels, I mean..there was a scene near the end of Return Of The King and I woke up right in the middle of it and I was like "yeah that's pretty gay where's my laptop"
I am more of a movie shipper simply because its easier to build a connection between two characters. I was completely content with the length of the Hobbit movies because it gives us so much to enjoy. And yes, I am a Thilbo Bagginshield shipper.
Thranduil and Bard: Barduil for life! Single dads of Middle Earth helping each other through a crisis, Legolas becoming friends with the Bardlings, so many Soccer-Dad AUs! Such a great pairing, I’m totally trash for it.
I remember last year I accidentally stumbled across this ship on Pinterest, and while the fanart was cute my reaction was mostly puzzled amusement like: "Really? Where'd you get that one?" The thing is though, when I first saw the first Hobbit movie I was only 12, and had yet to ship a single gay ship. So when I rewatched it last year, I felt like I was getting smothered by ship potential and by the end scene where Bilbo saves him and Thorin hugs him I was just like: "Oh." "There it is." And then proceeded to sell my soul to a ship I never expected to ship. And then made my best friend even more obsessed with it than I was. Good times.
My father and I both love The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. He sometimes doesn't understand the concept of shipping and really doesn't care about it that much. That said, I love Bagginshield so much. Admittedly, The Hobbit trilogy was flawed in certain areas despite overall being an enjoyable series. But if it got anything right, it was the characterization of Bilbo and Thorin. Also, kind of unrelated, I've noticed with straight couples is that when a boy and a girl become friends, they're expected to date one another most of the time. But with gay ships people are always like "nooo they're just bros ". I thought about this mainly because Thorin and Bilbo's relationship was said to be brotherly. But I think they had the potential to fall in love. I just think people aren't used to gay couples, so they don't realize it when two people of the same gender are attracted to one another. Or they'll use the "they're just friends" explanation. Just something I thought about.
what you're describing there is heteronormativity; the expectation that an unrelated man and a woman will always have a romantic dynamic between them, even despite evidence to the contrary or a lack of evidence, but that two people/characters of the same sex will not, even despite evidence to the contrary.
This is my Tolkien movie OTP, I also love the movie version of Thorin so much, he was a very interesting character and I was genuinely sad when he died. Also it was an added bonus that I found him to be quite attractive too which was a rare thing for a dwarf character. I also like to think that Bilbo did what he did with the Arkenstone because he loved Thorin and feared what it was doing to him. Also love the ship whether Bilbo is male or female in the fan work.
I grew up on the Hobbit (and lotr to an extent) but I never shipped anyone in the book; in fact one of the reasons I loved the story was the lack of romantic subplot and the focus on friendship. I wasn't disappointed by the length of the movies, but I was annoyed by the additional characters (all the elf drama? Really?) and (unfortunately?) I fell hard for the Thilbo ship. It caught me completely off guard and none of my friends could see it, but I swear to you its there 😂 Wonderful vid as always!!! Thanks so much for sharing
I watched the exntended editions and - now that I love Richard Armitage a lot more thanks to The Crucible and Robin Hood - I fell right into this ship. They just work, and it's tragic, which I always like. For LotR, I wasn't that much of a shipper (although Faramir/Éowyn made me very happy in the book, they deserved some good after all the shit they went through). The Silmarillion, however... oh boy. Maedhros/Fingon. Túrin/Beleg. So much angst.
Thranduil... just... How do I even start with this guy. His and Thorin's hate/love relationship, the speculation about his backstory and face, how glamours he is, speculation with Legolas' mom, etc. I don't even know how much screentime he had but DAMN I couldn't go on tumblr without seeing him for the longest time.
I love the Tolkien world and mythology! In regards to the Hobbit movies, I loved them but thought that 2 movies would have it justice. Either way I was just happy to see that world on screen again. I didn’t care for the Kili/Tauriel relationship. Did anyone see the Gandalf/Galadriel ship? 😀
I didn't think of taking the hobbit to isengard until you mentioned it... damn I do ship bagginshield but I don't really read fanfics of them, also I ship Legolas/Gimli xD
I love the book, and was disappointed that they didn't only make just one movie. Changes to Thorin's character also made him way more likable and noble pre-betrayal, whereas in the book he was a snobby prick the whole way through. That's what makes his apology to Bilbo and redemption that much more meaningful. The actors were prefect, the problem lied entirely in script and direction.
HA that 'Red Eye' mention! I am so there with you, I remember right after I watched that movie when it came out on DVD, I went and read everything there was on ff.net (as this was pre-ao3). They had so much chemistry!
I honestly loved the movies, and if you read the book first you will always be disappointed by the movie adoptions no matter what the movie is or book. I personally enjoy the movies and honestly cannot wait to see this world return.
I never thought about shipping Bagginshield until I saw An Unexpected Journey. I've always shipped everything that moves (especially if it's gay lol) but when I read the book I really couldn't ship anything. But in the movies it's impossible for me to ignore the chemistry between them. Also, none of them gets married (or at least has a crush on a woman or something like that) and that makes easier to think of them being gay. They are my fave OTP. I also ship Thranduil/Bard and Aragorn/Legolas, btw.
I love the hobbit movies! They are my favorite as well as the Lord of the Rings, I really like this ship and I also like a lot of other parings in the movies and books.
Bilbo/Bofur shipper here. Bofur was the first to accept and care about Bilbo. And was always worrying and looking out for him. Plus Bilbo can be so serious sometimes, he needs someone with a big heart and fun loving spirit.
Oh god this brought back so many feels! Still one of my absolutely favoutire ships, and I'm very glad it's still going strong. For me Gigolas or Gimlief or Gimli/Legolas is another very dear ship of mine (well...my ultimate if you will) and I think its journey is very interesting bc couple of years ago it was relatively small and unknown ship and always in the shadow of Legara (Aragorn/Legolas). These two with Hannigram (Hannibal Lecter/Will Graham) are my number one OTP - yeah can't decide between them :D Now...I think I'm gonna go read Sansûkh bc it combines both of those ships.
I say that I'm more of a movie shipper, I like to see how the chemistry between the characters are played out but I tend ship characters from television shows a lot more than books because I love seeing how the relationships play out or deciding which two (or more) characters that I would love to see together (whether in canon or fanon). Sadly, I don't read a lot of books to fully say that I ship characters through books.
I feel like all my opinions about Lord of the Rings/the Hobbit is heavily biased because I never grew up with it the same way other people did. I only watched both series 5 years ago or less, so I don't have the same investment. Personally I loved the Hobbit, despite some people saying the movies weren't objectively good and I absolutely adore Bagginshield.
As someone who read The Hobbit as a kid, I think a large part of the reason this never became a major ship back in the day is that Thorin's character in the books is taken much less seriously, and his relationship with Bilbo is given a lot less depth. Book!Thorin isn't really portrayed as a noble leader looking to take back his people's ancestral homeland so much as he's portrayed as a pompous old guy (his main role in the earlier part of the book is giving long-winded speeches that bore Bilbo to tears) who wants to get a bunch of gold. And y'know, he's not described looking nearly as dreamy as Richard Armitage, so. :-P All of that makes for a much less shippable character. And to my memory, he and Bilbo aren't portrayed as having a particularly deep bond in the book either, certainly not to the extent the movies gave them. So there wasn't really as much basis for a ship. And in answer to your questions: - I did feel that the Hobbit movies dragged on too long. Fleshing out the characters was good and some of the changes and additions they made were great, but even with that in mind, there was absolutely no reason they needed three movies to adapt this book. One would have been plenty, two at MOST. I didn't even bother seeing the second two movies, because they were just adding so much it didn't feel like The Hobbit anymore. - I'm not heavily into Hobbit/LOTR fandom, and so I don't have any major OTPs, but the ships I do have are pretty predictable. Aragorn/Arwen and Frodo/Sam are the two I'm most into. Not really surprising when you look at the books or the movies, I think. - Book vs. Movie Shipping - I'm definitely both! Some of my earliest OTPs were from favorite books of mine as a kid - Anne/Gilbert from AoGG and Taran/Eilonwy from The Prydain Chronicles being two of the earliest and still among my absolute favorites. I think I'm pretty good at visualizing the characters and scenes, so I never /needed/ the visual aspect to ship. But with rare exceptions, visual media tend to have larger fandoms (in my experience), which definitely helps with shipping culture. PS. Loving your necklace and manicure in this video!
Definitely more a movie shipper who really didn't care about the length or expansion of the lotr/hobbit movies... I like to lose myself in a fantasy world for a while so having them be so long winded helps with that! Though I'm more a casual shipper of these two, their chemistry can't be denied after all, a different Tolkien pairing owns my soul... It's Aragorn/Legolas (Aralas) ... I can't help it... I love them together! I even live for the tiny hint in BOTFA... And just for interest in general I ship the most from video games, then from tv shows, then movies, then books/comics... Would love to see some video game ships on this channel but dunno how easy it would be to do research without playing the games (watch let's plays maybe??) At the moment Joseph x Sebastian (from The Evil Within) and Corvo x The Outsider (from the dishonored series) own my entire soul!
I never thought about thilbo and I think that had to do with my fatigue by the end of the last hobbit movie. But now....hmmmm I’m going to have to go back and analyze! I hardcore ship Frodo/Sam. Absolutely loveeeeee that!
YES!!!! I love Thilbo so much!! I like both books and movies, but I love the visuals of movies and TV more when it comes to shipping. It helps me to read fanfiction of characters whose faces I’ve basically memorized.
Shardy1998 same here because the movies make the characters more interesting especially Thorin, the books made the characters very one dimensional and rather uninteresting.
Awesome vid! as for me, I am a bit of both. I ship from tv shows/movie and from book series myself. As for Thilbo, i never really got into the fictions, but I do enjoy the fanart of it all. The tragic death scene between the two at the end also sort of reminded me of the scene from the tv series Archer in which Woodhouse recounts some of his past in the first season and the death of his old war buddy on the battlefield whom was also alluded to as his lover or romantic love interest. the death scene that plays into that type of tragedy story trope (exceptionally close "brothers in arms" whom one or both die in each other's arms) seen in media a lot and sort of primed me and likely others to homoeroticize the death scene. As soon as I saw it, after the film I was like: "There is goign to be so much shipping of these two" lol.
I ship both books and movies/TV, but not always the same way. For example for Harry Potter I only go after book canon, the movies are not a factor for me. And don't get me started on the stretching the Hobbit to 3 movies...
I love Thildo (or Bagginsheild)! A I also love Arowen (think I'm spelling that right) and Aragorn from the original movies! I would say I'm more of a movie shipper. :)
The Bronte sisters RPF of the Duke of Gloucester sounds fascinating I'd love to hear more about that! Other LOTR ships for me are Faramir/Eowyn. I find I'm split pretty equally between Movie/TV shipping and shipping from books/comics. My ships from books/comics are usually my big OTPs though. Hayley ^_^
Whenever you do decide to do another video for the Lord of the Rings/the Hobbit, I'd love if it was Thranduil/Bard. Didn't expect to love that ship as much as I do now!
BEST Hobbit ship. In case anyone wants a fic rec, this is THE literal best fic for the ship. Nothing else I've read compares: archiveofourown.org/works/658324?view_full_work=true
There was one pre-movie Bilbo/Thorin fic based on the book 'verse called "Over" (which was rather good imo). It should also be pointed out that fics based on the book 'verse exclusively are essentially non-existent, which is understandable but frustrating since it would be rather interesting to read a fic that examines the characters and their relationship in that specific context.
Thank you for this video! I'm not into LoTR universe (despite my friend's attempts lol), but I did love Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. But I have a question I'd like to pose to you: Why aren't there fandom historians? Not in an official capacity, but more like the subreddit r/MuseumOfReddit. The Fanlore wiki is kinda like that, but I'd assume that a league of historians would have emerged for each fandom. I would personally love to be something like a Sailor Moon Historian! Just the history of Zines, and the budding online community. With all the recent adaptations it's so interesting to see old fans with 10 years plus experience interact with 13-year-old new fans. Having something like a fandom history book (The Potter Fandom, a history would be a cute thing) Well, this comment ended up being longer than I want, but let me know your thoughts!
I'm mostly a tv show shipper. I get more content that way most of the time. Stupid movies being less that 24 hours long. Book shipping second. Comic Books shipping third. Movie shipping last.
It depends. One great moment occured when I was reading lotr and was in the middle of the two towers. I thought "Hmm, Faramir and Eowyn should be together." Imagine my surprise when I read the last book and they actully got together! :D
Haven't seen these movies yet so idk if I ship or not, but lately I've realized I don't like altering good canon relationships, romantic or otherwise. I'm definitely a book fixer. There's very few movie adaptations I like as much as the book, and I don't see the actors in my head when I think of or read about my ships.
I love lord of the rings, ( especially the books and lotro) this pairing seems interesting! Also gimli /Legolas and Arwen/Éowyn are some of my favorite lord of the rings pairings in addition to Frodo/Sam and Bagginshield.
For the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings move shiper and thatnis because the books are to heard for me to read and comprehend, with Harry Potter bith books snd movies love them both.
Great video like always. I've never seen Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit but hearing you talk about the pairing is really interesting. Would you consider doing another video about Hannigram since the creators are now in talks to do a season 4 since two years have past and they have the rights back from NBC?

And I am a movie shipper, though I do have a few book ships like JonSatin since Satin Flowers never made a appearance in the Game of Thrones show.
Bilbo dose get call a confirmed bachelor in the books. A euphemism for gay at the time.
yeah exactly...Tolkien may not have written a romance between him and thorin but he also wrote bilbo as never marrying...which Thorin also didn't...Kili and Fili were his sister sons...he himself had no children we know of...
VelkanKiador Yes!
I didn't really instantly ship Bilbo and Thorin because I wasn't really looking to ship anything ( AND THEN ) the "letsshipeverthingthatmoves" Part of my brain kicked in. Yup. That's how it went for me too.
Oh yeah same
The horror but so true 😱😰😭
Are we the same person or do we just share a braincell-
GET OUT OF MY ROOM YOU STALKER
Thilbo shipper for life.

Yesss
Yes!!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Acorn Scene...
My heart is tingling, time to watch my precious director's cut again!
I first fell for Frodo and Sam. Their relationship in Lotr is so amazing.
I saw the potential with Bilbo and Thorin in the books, but the movies make it much more noticeable. I'm so glad that fans still write fanfics even though the movies are over.
Did you all know that according to JRR the whole Shire thought Bilbo had ran off to get married?! 🤣🤣
daaaaaaaaaaaaamn
NO WAY 😂😂
You don't even need to know who the characters are to get the ship feels, I mean..there was a scene near the end of Return Of The King and I woke up right in the middle of it and I was like "yeah that's pretty gay where's my laptop"
Eriotl Ampora was it the acorn scene? Cause me too
which scene do you mean? (I ship Thilbo so don't worry no hate here ;)
wait The Return of The King? You mean Gigolas then?

What do our shipper eyes see?

it is there I know...as soon as you open your mind/eyes a little it's so obvious ;)
OMG I DROPPED EVERYTHING TO WATCH THIS MY FAVE OTP
If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place
- Thorin Oakenshield
I watched the exntended editions and - now that I love Richard Armitage a lot more thanks to The Crucible and Robin Hood - I fell right into this ship. They just work, and it's tragic, which I always like.

Personally I really love Legolas/Gimli, Tho I never find a ton of Fox’s for that pair.
not even in archive of our own?
Legolas and Gimli for life
Yes thank you!
my otp too but love so much thorin and bilbo
YESS!!
Yes this and Thilbo is my LOTR OTPs
this bought back all my emotions from a couple years ago aghhhh i shipped them SO MUCH
This has been my OTP since the first movie came out! Yes! Bagginshield forever!
You're so cute! I had no idea! I really love your extensive analysis of why and how the ship came to be. So interesting!
When I wacth the movies i was wating for them to kisa

I love you Sasha Woods. Miss you on io, etc. Glad to have found you here!! Hope your great and your family. Much blessings.
I never saw this... but I do now.
Me & Bilbo hanging out together in the Richard Armitage's Face Appreciation Society.
Thorin/bilbo and Gimli/Legolas are my fav OTp forever
YES!!!! I love Thilbo so much!! I like both books and movies, but I love the visuals of movies and TV more when it comes to shipping. It helps me to read fanfiction of characters whose faces I’ve basically memorized.
Your channel is a blessing for all fans!
Damn I never thought of them together. But now I watched the movie again im freaking out thinking.
IT COULD BE
im both I'm a movie and a book shipper
I was watching this movie the first time, and even after a few minutes (and not really knowing their names) I already shipped them :3
Barduil is everything.
I LOVE Thilbo and I'm more of a movie shipper than a book shipper
Shardy1998 same here because the movies make the characters more interesting especially Thorin, the books made the characters very one dimensional and rather uninteresting.
I was in a play version of The Hobbit: my cousin was the goblin king
2:58 Same! I thought I was the only one who shipped that! Glad to know I'm not alone
I love this channel so much and I loved the amount of Star Trek references in this video😂
This was such a great and well thought out video! Thank you for sharing it!
Thorin "MAJESTIC AF" Oakenshield!!
I actually ship smaugbo lol
Xandra Nicholai not kidding :/ I know it's kinda weird but I ship it.
with a dragon ? wtff lolll ^^
xXPiggy SquishyXx Bah! I love that
So you ship beastiality.....😐
BAHAHAHHAHAHAH I CAN'T BREATH-
I love Thildo (or Bagginsheild)!
Hayley ^_^
Great video!
I really enjoy the hobbit movies and am still a Bagginshield shipper
Loved it. But god do I wish the Adventure-Blogs were mentioned.
I myself am mainly a screen slipper, meaning what I see and like, I ship. Though sometimes like snarry, I read it and hard core ship’em...
Love your videos!! ^^ These two are pure fluff!
9:35 That still only counts as one!
Whenever you do decide to do another video for the Lord of the Rings/the Hobbit, I'd love if it was Thranduil/Bard. Didn't expect to love that ship as much as I do now!
I dunno ... I would watch avid about the Bronte sisters writing Duke of Wellington RPF fics. That is if you would consider it.
I would love to see a Thranduil and Bard video, a small ship but mighty.
BEST Hobbit ship. In case anyone wants a fic rec, this is THE literal best fic for the ship. Nothing else I've read compares: archiveofourown.org/works/658324?view_full_work=true
phoenixjustice YES!!!!!
I read it when it was a work in progress, my God there is just SO MUCH *angst*
Can you do an episode on Frodo and Sam?
There was one pre-movie Bilbo/Thorin fic based on the book 'verse called "Over" (which was rather good imo). It should also be pointed out that fics based on the book 'verse exclusively are essentially non-existent, which is understandable but frustrating since it would be rather interesting to read a fic that examines the characters and their relationship in that specific context.
WHERE CAN I READ IT
Do BROTZLY! Dirk & Todd from DGHDA
Hehehehehe
Could you do a video of puzzleshipping/blindshipping from Yu-Gi-Oh or Suzalulu from Code Geass? Maybe put them up for polls?
can you do Merlin and Arthur (Merthur) from BBC Merlin?? There’s a LOT of shippable moments and it’s adorable :,)
Thank you for this video! I'm not into LoTR universe (despite my friend's attempts lol), but I did love Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.
But I have a question I'd like to pose to you:
Why aren't there fandom historians?
Not in an official capacity, but more like the subreddit r/MuseumOfReddit. The Fanlore wiki is kinda like that, but I'd assume that a league of historians would have emerged for each fandom. I would personally love to be something like a Sailor Moon Historian! Just the history of Zines, and the budding online community. With all the recent adaptations it's so interesting to see old fans with 10 years plus experience interact with 13-year-old new fans. Having something like a fandom history book (The Potter Fandom, a history would be a cute thing)
Well, this comment ended up being longer than I want, but let me know your thoughts!
I'm mostly a tv show shipper. I get more content that way most of the time. Stupid movies being less that 24 hours long. Book shipping second. Comic Books shipping third. Movie shipping last.
I love your necklace 😍
Thilbo is the best :D
Can someone please do DreamWorks/Disney crossover shipped namely The Big Four (Jack Frost,Hiccups, Rapunzel and Merida)? Please ?
Legolas and Gimli all day everyday!
Thilbo ❤️🤪☺️ I love all the Hobbit movies and I'm glad we got 3 cause more content 😅🤞😉 I wish their were more movies 🍿
It depends. One great moment occured when I was reading lotr and was in the middle of the two towers. I thought "Hmm, Faramir and Eowyn should be together." Imagine my surprise when I read the last book and they actully got together! :D
I loved this video!
Thanks, I just picked it up at a thrift store :)
I didn't know this ship. Merci =)
I love lord of the rings, ( especially the books and lotro) this pairing seems interesting! Also gimli /Legolas and Arwen/Éowyn are some of my favorite lord of the rings pairings in addition to Frodo/Sam and Bagginshield.
I always love your analysis, I never got this ship until now! Also, please cover Lost Girl? Please I'd give you my left kidney🙏
I love the movies, never read the books (sorry). I like Legolas and Aragorn ^^. And I love Thranduil ^^
