A much more accurate and better telling of the Bob Crane murder than a lot of other videos on RUclips. I appreciated your comment that the murder weapon believed to be a camera tripod was a supposition, and that the infamous "brain speck" photo was not credible. I thought Carpenter was the most likely suspect for a long time, but after re-reading Graysmith's book many times and realizing how bad the investigation of the murder was, I developed a lot of doubt. As you state there was not enough evidence. Thanks for the good job you did on this!
Thanks Tom! My videos tend to be shorter and to the point, so I try not to delve too much into speculation. I try to cover the basic facts. I recently heard from a pretty reliable source who claimed to have seen some of the videos WITH BOB HIMSELF prior to the murder. His suspects a high-profile father of a girl in a video.
yep, plus when the cops caught up to Carpenter in L.A. shortly after the murder I think he stretched his hands out and said "go ahead and arrest me". Something like that its in the Graysmith book but that book is hard to find.
I grew up about 1/4 mile from the Winfield Apartments (as they were known back in 1978, not Place, like the sign says now) Moved to Scottsdale in 1974. Used to ride my bike right past this apartment everyday for years when I had a Scottsdale Progress paper route. I remember that day, Scottsdale police had it taped off with crime scene tape and I had to go the long way around to get to Chaparall Rd. Back in Sept/Oct. of '78 the rumor going around locally was that is was the father of one of the young girls that he video taped. A guy I knew said he reported to police that he saw someone pull up next to a large dumpster near the apartment and throw away what appeared to be a tire iron. He said cops did not go check it out for a week or two after he reported what he saw, but by then the garbage truck had already come by and emptied it. I remember too, in about August of '78 they emptied the canal behind the apartments looking for the murder weapon. As kids we loved it, found lots of old bikes, shopping carts and would shoot catfish with our BB guns.
That is an interesting personal story, thank you for sharing it. I have heard similar end even more detailed stories. I even have a name, but I cannot share it here becasue it was provided to me in confidence (and it's a name I would not want to reveal ... THAT kind of guy!)
Scottsdale Was Just A Small Town Back in 1978. I Can't Believe That Apartment Complex is Still There After All These Years. I Hope They Give It Proper Respect.
I have heard that the Scottsdale police simply weren't well trained at that time in high profile homicide cases (there had been something like 1-2 murders in the past 10 years prior to this)--the crime scene simply wasn't well handled--people were coming in and out and essentially the area became "contaminated"-in addition, there wasn't the DNA technology available at that time to analyze blood samples/tissue etc--I know there has been some analysis of some saved blood--but nevertheless would there not have been some degradation of the samples with time (despite storage in liquid nitrogen etc)--I think whoever did this crime got away with it because of police mismanagement and that technology wasn't advanced enough to narrow down the suspect
Trivia Note: The leather jacket Bob Crane wore throughout the filming of Hogan's Heroes was originally the leather jacket Frank Sinatra wore during the filing of Von Ryan's Express.
He was so hot its. Come someone comes along and midday kills man I hope they met what they did to him while I found out it was a two people that killed them that's what you told me that's what he told me in a Ouija board that's there's two people killed them so I met someone just that it's my story and I'm sticking to it
It was a good show. However, his behavior was getting to be erratic. He was getting less work in Hollywood which led to his decision to go on the road and do live theater. I think it may have had more to do with his life choices.
@@AverageMe I really liked The Bob Crane Show when it was telecast in 1975. I have hoped for years that it would be released on DVD, but it has never happened, and there is just one show and some excerpts on RUclips. Does anyone have an idea where all the episodes can be viewed?
This was a very interesting video. Hollywood mysteries are certainly intriguing. I had no idea that "Col. Hogan" and Helga had married, or as Sgt. Schultz would have have said..."I know nothing..."
I am influenced by you and the movie Driver X.You are real.Too many sad stories out there.Positive people=Positive thinking=Positive results. My only job I do is drive for Lyft.I have too many reasons to not drive for Uber.Information, knowledge, insightful, empowering,is always a relief to me watching all of your videos. It only takes one to make things right.I have a guardian angel rear view mirror hanging metal in my car.You are a very open minded person, down to earth, always to the point. You are one of my top RUclipsrs out there.I just started my channel-The Beacon Of Light Driver💡Nick is lit.I know Mark, you have a caring soul.I know nothing about making videos, but trying to learn. The key to everything is never give up and keep trying. You helped me become a better driver unlike the other taxis, cabs, rideshare drivers,to outdo,go above and beyond,be responsive, alert, attention to detail, give positive feedback,be noticed over everyone when picking up my passengers(roof lyft light).I am doing something right when my Lyft rating went from 4.61-4.98.Probably unheard of.
My suspect would be Richard Dawson he always been jealous of Bob Crane there was no love loss between him and Bob Crane John Carpenter would be my number two there were rumors that he was gay and fell in love with Bob Crane number three Patty his second wife have a lot to gain she would make millions off his death
The idea of his wife being responsible for Crane's death really doesn't hold water. If she set up some "hit," it's implausible the light-sleeping Crane would have let him into the apartment, much less gone to sleep in front of him, and an assassin would have brought his own weapon with him, surely? This was a crime of rage. The Crane's were filmed reuniting when she visited 10 days before Crane's death and they seem to be getting along well enough, and it's hard to reconcile the Valdis who contributed home movies and audio commentaries for the Hogan's Heroes DVD box set, in which she speaks so lovingly of her co-stars, with this image of somebody having arranged to brutally murder him.
Any ideas on where the tripod might be. The tripod made the blood marks in the rental car, but maybe it would be thrown into a garbage bin. There is some talk that Carpenter threw it into the canal behind the complex, or buried it at the Indian reservation about 1 mile away.
Crane was actually not a DJ in NYC; he was a deejay in Hornell, NY, but was so popular that it led to a job at a station in LA. Also, Victoria Berry had gone to his apartment for a private meeting over a sizzle reel she was creating to shop around Hollywood for more acting work (he did not miss a lunch meeting on the day of his death).
I never understood the theory John flattened his tire at the Windmill and was going to kill him there in the parking lot. How did he intend to explain his whereabouts? Also, if they doubted that he had called crane in the middle of the night from his hotel room as he claimed, could they not have run a trunk report? Hotels in those days made good money off local and long distance calls. It would prove nothing but it would show whether the calls were made. In todays world I think John would have been arrested in less than 24 hrs and given a life sentence. He was also a child molester, what a scumbag.
@@AverageMe Don't you wonder where Rita Cloutier and some of the other witnesses at that time are? You mean to tell me she didn't get any vibe from him that he just beat somebody to death? So much circumstantial evidence but very overwhelming. I think it was Jim Raines that once said the drivers side of the car was very well cleaned of prints, etc. The passenger side door had his handprints upside down as if he very quietly shut the passenger door. That side of the car was not wiped off. One thing is for sure, the hours he spent in that hotel room between the murder and leaving for the airport must have been hell on earth. I cant imagine the anxiety. I also always believed that Richard Dawson knew what happened.
By the way, my family lived in Scottsdale in '78 and I do realize how inexperienced the police were. That was a great time to live in Scottsdale! In my own opinion, had Ron Dean gone to DPS when they processed the rental car it would have been game over. That was a huge error. It was written that subcutaneous tissue was in the car that was present at the crime scene. That part would not be circumstantial! Loved the view by the way.

Bob crane was already divorced from his 1st wife for over 8 years when he was killed and was in the middle of a divorce from his 2nd wife.
Bob was into video recording before he met John. That's the reason he was introduced to John. Cause, John worked for Sony!
